Assassin's Creed 4: next-gen versions to offer 'new connected features'

Plus improved graphics and physics

Ubisoft has outlined some of the planned differences between Assassin's Creed 4 on current and next-gen platforms.

"In addition to improved graphics and physics," creative director Jean Guesdon has said that next-gen versions will offer enhanced connected features, although he was vague about their exact nature.

"Next-gen versions will bring to the players new connected features allowing them to feel that even if they remain 'single player' it will be better to be a 'single connected player'. I mean, that next-gen consoles will allow players to have a solo experience that benefit the presence of a huge community."

While game studios familiar with new consoles from Sony and Microsoft aren't yet ready to fully divulge their next-gen development plans, Guesdon's comments echo some made recently by Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, who said: "I think the notion of a single-player experience has to go away. However, I'm not saying that there will be no single-player experiences ... it could be it's called connected single-player or online single-player instead.

"Online and social can reignite single-player in a new type of context and provide benefits that will make you want to be a part of a connected story-mode rather than a disconnected story-mode," he added. "Sure, if the technology forces you to play a traditional single-player game online, that doesn't make sense but if it's offering actual benefits to be online then you want to be part of it."

The Wii U is the only console I'm getting this generation and I'm glad Ubisoft are releasing AC4 on it. I enjoyed AC3 so much it's the first time I'm excited for the release of an AC game after playing the last one. Despite what people have to say about AC3 & the Wii U. I hope they continue doing this for years to come, upgrade their game for the more powerful consoles and cater to them while continuing support for consoles already released so everyone is happy.

Single player meaning to play the game as one player not part of a "community" geez i wish developers would stop pushing this always online, always connected BS. If i wanted to play with others i'd go multiplayer.. I'll wait & see what exactly these "connected" features are before i pass judgement but still...

Only saving grace is that Ubi mention players might think it better to be connected which makes it sound like there IS actually a choice in the matter..

    Damnit! Don't devs understand?

You are the only people who want to push this social connectivity crap down our throats! (besides publishers)

Leave singleplayer alone. Single player is the entire foundation of gaming; it has more than earned its keep.

You lot really don't get it, do you... Gamers who are against social aspects of gaming are in a minority. Those who voice their opinions on forums, even more so. These new ideas bring in the cash, and if they didn't, they wouldn't do it. There are plenty of people out their willing to support social gaming, these devs and publishers aren't stupid.

The only 'social' way to improve games is to bring back splitscreen for games that are compatible with the mode (especially racing games; this entire generation, there have only been about 10 splitscreen racing games, and 3 of them are PS3 exclusive and 1 of those and 2 more are only very recent releases in the kart racing genre). But even then, AC would not come under that category. I'm only 21, I started gaming on the PS1. I love CoD multiplayer as much as the next person. But I love single-played and local multiplayer much more, and I don't think gaming switching to 'always connected' single-player or doing away with single-player completly, is not the way to go. It's just another cunning plan to make money... as it's about as likely to succeed as any of Baldrick's.

Online single player can mean a whole lot more than just leaderboards now, things like persona 4s SOS system or hints on dark souls are good examples. I'm not sure how this sort of thing could be implemented into Assasins creed 4.. Perhaps ghost characters showing their routes for assassinations etc? Maybe when you call in assassins to help it could be other players answering your requests similar to personas SOS system? There are a lot of possibilities available that we shouldn't ignore just because we hear the words "socially connected". I'll take the crazy attitude of waiting to see what these features are before publicly denouncing or ridiculing them...

And that is exactly why I'm getting the 360 version. I really hate this social connected crap and it really irks me when developers and publishers think they can tell me what I actually like or "what is best". I think I'm in a far better position to know what I like and think than some company.
