Assassin's Creed 4 is official - details coming Monday

First official artwork for the pirate-themed game released

Ubisoft has officially announced Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag following numerous leaks in recent weeks.

Assassin's Creed 4 Screenshot
The publisher has released the game's official box art along with the statement: "We confirm that Ubisoft will announce all the details of Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag on Monday March 4th at 5pm GMT."

According to various leaks this week Black Flag is set during 1715 in the Caribbean, with Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas among the islands that will be visited.

An Examiner report claims the game's main character is Edward Kenway, father of Haytham Kenway from Assassin's Creed 3, and an Assassin and known Privateer.

Ubisoft has confirmed Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U and PC as platforms for the game. The PS3 version will receive "60 minutes of exclusive gameplay," it's said.

[UPDATE: Ubisoft's website has seemingly confirmed the Assassin's Creed 4 release date as October 29, 2013, with versions also set for "next-gen consoles".]

Earlier this month Ubisoft confirmed plans to publish the new Assassin's Creed game during the financial year ending March 31, 2014.

Connor is my favorite assassin and it's sad he's not returning but it's great that you can play as his grandfather. I've been interested to see Edward Kenway's backstory explored further after reading AC Forsaken, even in the book he was an interesting character.

OT, I didn't enjoy the last AC, didn't even put 10 hours into it before trading it in. Here's hoping this one can pull me back in!

I like the games, but jesus there's just too many of them. I think the series needs a good rest for a couple of years until they decide what to do with it. Of course, we all know that wont happen, its gone beyond a simple game franchise now and turned into the much sought after cash cow.

Would they not have been better spent working on this title for a few more months before publishing for the nextbox and ps4? Just seems now they are gonna rush to make this come out before people start to jump to the next gen :(

Also how random is that sixty minutes? It can't actually be important to the story as uni soft has said it won't hurt the other experiences - sixty minutes of random side missions seems an odd deal to strike for the game.

Ubisoft flogging a dead horse. Hmmmm... On second thoughts, a perfectly alive horse considering there was barely a focus on assassinating in Disappointment Creed 3. Not to mention the fact that this apparently has a focus on the bore that was Naval Battles. If it was called Naval Creed/Sailor Creed/Ship Creed I would be pleased, but this is not the case. Not to mention the lack of major dev time they must have for this title. I wouldn't mind if it didn't have the number '4' stamped on the front cover, but considering it does it must be a very rushed entry in the series. At least with Brotherhood and Revelations, they were only filler games to finish off the Ezio story. But quite frankly, a year/year and a half dev cycle isn't that much to create a major entry in the franchise. No doubt all the fans though will lap this one up. Quite frankly this series has gone on far too long and has completely lost what made it good.

There were lots of people deriding MS yesterday in that thread, saying that by going after exclusive content and timed exclusives they were segregating Gamer's and the industry and that this was something that Sony would never do, because Sony love Gamer's and just love to make Games. This was after I pointed out that The Witness and Destiny would be appearing exclusively on the PS4 or at least get exclusive content.

I maybe didn't explain myself properly but I'm typing this from the ceiling of my office as my colleagues try to pull me down after the Rangers Title Stripping verdict came in :D !

Even though I buy all my 3rd party console games on ps3, I really hate it when they pull off stuff like this. I just hope that the exclusive content is of the nature that it would never have been produced, if it not were for the chunk of money gained from the platform-owner. Unfortunately there's not much to do about it as I see it. It's not as if the people choosing a different platform out of principle outnumber the ones being swayed to the console with the exclusive content.

Having avoided Final Fantasy harder than I'd avoid an english 'value' lasagne these days I can honestly not comment on whether Connor was more or less dull than Lightning. I can however confirm that the trees in Connors game displayed more personality and emotion than Connor himself.

He had some pretty mint fighting skills though. Just completely charisma-free. Replacing him with a pirate can only be a good thing really.

Cant they just take a break for a few years, let the series stagnate naturally and then come back fresh, rather then flooding gamers with game after game with little change.
I mean, on the consoles alone weve had 5 games already, and 4 of those have been release back-to-back, year after year, and because of that, we havent seen the game evolve that much, just steps rather then a leap like we had from AC1 to AC2

Aw, look at the adorable 4 in the game's title. It's almost as though they want to make me think that this isn't just another annual "expansion pack". I wonder if this trick would have worked if they had called Revelations, Assassin's Creed IV: Revelations instead.

Until Ubisoft announces an AC game set during the Mayan/Epytian heyday with flashbacks to the First Civilization, you can count me out because fool me once (AC:Revelations) shame on you, fool me twice (ACIII) shame on me.

I'm all for exclusive games and don't mind exclusive content, aslong as its not 'timed' which is what I find to be petty, especially if you pay for it. Money could be better spent elsewhere.

I'll wait and see what it comes out like. No point bitching NOW about the whole annualisation by the way. If that was a problem to you, you should've taken a stand back at 3 or even Brotherhood. To my mind, they're just making their own series boring and kind of flooding the little niche it filled, but that's just me. I thought AC2, while not perfect at all, was one of the best games and standout moments of this gen. After that it went downhill to my mind. Fast.

I'd like them to make the important character assassinations a bit more varied. Give different ways like a sneaky poisoning, use the environment to make it look like an accident or dress up and lure them to a silent kill. Basically something a bit like the old Hitman games.

Because for a game about assassins the actual assassinations have become a lot more clumsy and repetitive.

Too right. It seems each new game has moved away from that and concentrated on bolting more things on that go against it. Most of the kills in 3 ended up being out in crowds and bumbling around after somebody.

But quite frankly, a year/year and a half dev cycle isn't that much to create a major entry in the franchise.

You're assuming that the same development team who worked on AC3 are the ones working on this, and that they started work after completing the previous game.

For all we know, however, Ubisoft could be using a similar model to the one Activision are using for Call of Duty, i.e. two different teams are working on different games in the franchise simultaneously. Ubisoft Montreal are a pretty huge developer, after all - they just finished Far Cry 3, and as well as AC4 they're working on Watchdogs and a new Rainbow 6 game. Of course, they've now got the staff who formerly worked at THQ Montreal to help them out, too.

(If I'm right, it could mean Ubisoft also recently began work on Assassins Creed 5...)

I think people would be less worried about this if it didn't have a "IV" in the title. I know I would. I am intrigued though as I actually did enjoy the naval combat in AC3. Unfortunately it was one of the few things I did enjoy. Like previous posts have mentioned the games do seem to have gradually lost focus. The urban areas of New York and Boston were boring and kind of the same. Not much in the way of fun climbing and air assassinations, at least not compared to previous games. The frontier was a nice change. I'm worried that this game will veer even further from the core game play that made AC2 great.

I actually enjoyed brotherhood and revelations. I thought they were genuinely good, brought great new elements to the proven model of AC2 and were a great way to continue Ezio's story. I'd be happier if this game turned out to be more something along those lines than a full sequel especially at this point in the ps3/360 life cycle.

People can moan about them releasing one a year but I'd argue that they have actually been good quality games with a decent length (call of duty campaigns tend to last 5ish hours and people seem to buy that s**te every year). AC3 did stumble and I for one was dissapointed. It was clearly rushed. It had a new engine that had not been properly utilised and the game was a badly paced but was still a good game. (and to the person who posted about Connor being the best assassin, behave. He was so dull)

If the new assassin is Connor's grandfather then wouldn't we still be Desmond? I thought they going a different way for the next one.

Out of the 5 (yes 5!) I only really enjoyed 2 (2 and Brotherhood I do believe) and although AC3 bought change to the series it just wasn't enough from stopping it going stale IMO. I didn't even have a go at these naval battles which angered some. But if they are anything like Den Defense from previous (something I couldn't stand) then I didn't miss much.

They had the same amount of development time on Brotherhood and that was ALOT better than ACII, so...

  55. sevvybgoode on 1 Mar '13 said:

Similar to some of the other posters on here I really enjoyed the naval battles on 3, they we probably the best part of the game if I'm totally honest. Howver the cities have always been the biggest draw IMO and due to 3s location and timeframe it couldn't offer the sprawling playgrounds that ezios games could. I loved assassins creed 2 and brotherhood was nearly as good in my eyes, revelations didn't reach the same heights but I still thought it offered a lot gameplay wise. Assassins creed 3 though had the wrong character as the main hero and Boston etc were incredibly boring. I didn't like the wild bits either barring hunting and that's been surpassed by far cry 3 in my eyes anyway.

If they wanted to make a follow up they should have kept the title as assassins creed 3 and bolted a sub title ala revelations/brotherhood to it. After all it sounds like its set during the same timeframe...

I just hope they don't set it all in the Caribbean, London or Paris from that era would be decent alternatives although I've kind of got my heart set on a Victorian London setting for one of the next assassins creed games. That or modern Tokyo...

True, but with that likes of CoD, and many sports titles, the focus for those games is the multiplayer aspect, that why the story (Well, what story there is) and single-player content is usually so insignificant. As little as I enjoy Call of Duty, its easier for them to go down the annual release path.

With games like Assassins Creed though, where the Single Player experience is meant to be the main focus of the game, with multiplayer as a bonus, having a yearly cycle between releases is putting a choke-hold on the devs, reducing the experience by rushing the game out with little time to focus on building a stronger story or improved gameplay experience.

  57. sonic_uk on 1 Mar '13 said:

I will get the game, I did enjoy the others after all, but as I said I think they need to give the series a rest for a couple of years. I will be getting it on 360 as that's my platform of choice for multiplatform games, and I'm not too bothered about the exclusive content, its usually just an extra mission or something similar which doesn't worry me as I rarely play any of the exclusive content that comes with games anyway.

  58. HelloLadies on 1 Mar '13 said:

They're just diluting the franchise now and its completely lost the point. I personally enjoyed the setting of AC 1 and found it exciting and fresh in a way, it just lacked in the gameplay department. AC 2 was probably my favourite of the series so far but I quite enjoyed Ezios story in the other games. 3 was a buggy mess and I found the setting and addition of guns to be quite a disappointment not to mention Connor the simpleton assassin. I really don't know what to expect from this pirates of the high seas addition. It just seems ridiculous and another step away from being an assassin. Like I said in another article they should have done a spin off franchise that caters to the crowd that just want to go in swinging their sword like a rusty gate. I really hope they eventually dial the era right back to the 1300s or 1400s and work on the assassination mechanic so you can stalk your target and eliminate them as you see fit.

TBH, your probably not missing much. They love to go on about how we are getting a whole 60 minutes of extra content, but fail to mention that of those 60 minutes, 10 minutes goes to cutscenes to introduce the new missions, 10-20 minutes (depending how close missions are to fast-travel points) goes to traveling to the missions start point so roughly half of that time is spent being actually playing the extra missions.
