Today’s PlayStation Meeting 2013 event at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom was, as expected, all about the future of Sony’s home console franchise. While the company did make the long-overdue Playstation 4 official, it somehow managed to wrap up the two-hour event — during which it outlined the console’s specs, detailed key features and showcased a raft of games — without giving attendees a glimpse of the actual console. To be honest, though, what it can do matters more than the way it looks. So what exactly can it do?
If you have been following all the recent rumors surrounding the console, chances are you already know most of the things worth knowing about the PlayStation 3’s successor. In any case, here is a quick rundown of some of the most noteworthy things to have come out of the event:
The PS4 will be available for purchase during the holiday season for an as-yet unknown price.

Hate to break it to you but the PlayStation 4 is not better because its touting a 8 core processor, specially seeing that its only clocked at 1.6Ghz. Its only better because its a better value and that's it.. This processor will be irreverent at launch and even if the games written for the PS4 are strictly dependent on multiple cores theirs not a chance in hell Crysis 3 will look anything like what it dose on a PC specially all all maxed out... the top graphics card out right now can barely crack 30FPS and that video card is almost 15" long...LOL.. As a Game console computer tech I will inform you the most consoles have a dedicated GPU chip soldered directly to the motherboard... you think their going to get GTX 680 performance on this type of implementation your crazy... also to note that AMD is the company building the CPU and the GPU for the PS4 and their hardware pales in comparison to Intel's and Nvidia's... So yes PS4 buyers will get a great system for the money but hate to say its hardware is already obsolete in comparison to a gaming PC and it has not even launched yet.. Games however will all be the same just graphically toned down so your precious console doesn't over heat and explode.. OH wait it might happen anyways.. RROD..YLOD familiar..LOL

The games will speak for themselves as they do now. Crysis 3 "in all of it's glory" on MODERN, TOP-OF-THE-LINE, PC hardware DID NOT distinguish itself against 8yr old console tech! In your own words

So no wonder the game failed to destroy the console version. So if you DON'T have the "top of the line card", then you can't even get 30FPS! So much for a $1000.00! Being a home theater fan, "my" personal belief is that all of that memory is for games and also 4K! Sony is at the forefront with 4K and the PS4 will be the trojan horse like the PS3 before it was for Blu-ray. 4K requires a larger screen (60" or above) to see a real difference. The only GPUs capable of displaying 4K are "some" 600 series cards and one AMD card, that's it! So that also means the PS4 is intended to be around for a while. If that's all a top-of-the-line gaming PC can do with the best PC game against 8yr old console tech, then it's in trouble against the PS4.
If any system will overheat and explode it will be the PC because many of them do. That is why you need a case as large as a small child and 500 fans, liquid cooling, ect! The PC on a whole is THE MOST unreliable piece of electronic equipment that a consumer uses. It's not a matter of "if", but when with a PC.

As a PC gamer I have to say PlayStation 4 is not as bad as some of you are making out to be. No it will not play Crysis 3 Maxed out in all its glory, but it will however have over a 100 game that will be optimized to play on it over the next 8 years. This is not something us PC gamers can say about our 2000+ dollar PC's, unless you upgrade along the way and in most cases upgrades cost more than a console. also a consoles OS is probably 1/20 as demanding as say any Windows OS, witch dose equate to more resources for the games.. So even if the PlayStation 4 costs 500 buks witch it wont you defiantly cant deny the value here..
As for the hardware for the PlayStation 4 I have to say a 1.6GHz 8 core processor screams more next gen tablet than it dose next gen game console. This is in my opinion is a step back from the previous 3.2Ghz Cell processor.. But something tells me this is what developers wanted.. their is no question developers are getting better in writing mulch-threaded programs and games. This is the future with out question and believe it or not PC gamers this will only benefit us.. Remember games now days are mostly written for Consoles and spruced up for PC (you can thank pirates for this). why... well console games make money and PC games don't (except for the occasional MMO). So just think if these games run at 60FPS at 1080P on a multi-Core Processor that's clocked at 1.6Ghz just think how they will run on our bad ass PC's.. In the end we all benefit, console gamers get a system that is definitely a compromise at a good price and is good for 8 years and Us PC gamers sit back and benefit as the evaluation of developing games progresses..

Of course it's not bad, it's outstanding!!! This thing is better than 90% of the gaming rigs out there right now! If you want 8GB of GDDR5, then be prepared to spend money on an SLI rig costing what, well over a thousnd dollars on GPUs alone, and some games don't even use SLI! A Geforce Titan costs $1000 and you only have 6?!! Value DEFINITELY cannot be denied. Who said that it will not play Crysis 3 Maxed out in all its glory? Well "in all it's glory" is the comparison link below and it ain't $h!t, I'm sorry. That is vs 8 yr old console hardware too boot!! Many, many PCs can't do that now! The processor will not be a problem, the Wii U has a similar "seemingly slow" processor. I don't believe that this will help the PC's cause at all. With VERY little money to be made, then there is VERY little incentive to do anything PC wise as it is now. Plus you have rampant piracy issues, DRM, and all kinds of different hardware to program for. I just don't see it PC wise.

You're equating having 8gb GDDR5 is something that the PC needs to do and to do that you need to spend 3grand on GPUS alone. The take away from that statement is that you think 8Gb GDDR5 is what the PC has to live up to, like thats something special...ITS NOT. If thats not what you meant, whatever. but thats how it comes off. You're talking about that spec and then throw 3 titans into the mix....makes no sense.

I just made a comparison. The newly released Geforce Titan has 6GB of GDDR5 and the PS4 has 8GB of GDDR5. If it "needs" to do it comes down to what it's trying to do. Is it something special, you tell me? I never said "3" grand at all, I said SLI. Is there a card out there with 8GB of GDDR5? I already said that upgrading a PC is a waste of money and it sounds like you're agreeing with me! If you think that I said you need 3 Titans..."prove it". What you cannot deny is the incredible value that this console represents. One Titan GPU is $1000, vs one PS4 at about $500 max.

Why are you comparing the Titan to the PS4 anyway? What does that have to do with anything? Why dont you compare it to a gpu thats more fitting, like a $360 GTX 670? I dont think upgrading is a waste of money, the upgrades i did to my system were well worth it...better than forking over for a new system.

The Titan just launched, and the PS4 just released it's specs, why not? The GTX670 is not top of the line, it's not the newest thing out either and it's not the best. Better than forking out for a new system? A 670 will run you more than a current console, and almost as much as a PS4! Either console is money better spent.

O_O The titian is ONLY for people wit 30in monitors or multiple monitors...you dont buy that card to run 1 1080p monitor...if you do, you're an idiot. The gtx 670 may not be the newest or fastest, but if you game at 1080p, its all you need...hell you could get away with lower than that.

It's a $1000 card vs a $500 console shows the value of the console. The 670 vs a current gen console shows the value of the console. Just look at the various comparison links and you not only feel the value in your wallet, you can actually see the value on screen!

Even if what you say is true, observing the differences on a compressed 720p video of all platforms is not in anyway representing what it actually looks like...the differences are about 10 times more obvious between all 3 if viewed in person.

That's all there is. That's the closest the video can come with real time gameplay and scene vs scene comparisons. The content is exactly the same! No loss levels, no loss features. You have to keep in mind that that is a top of the line PC! What that video shows more than anything is that you don't need uber hardware to get results like that.

I like BF3, I have it on PC. Does anybody still play that game anymore? The most played FPS games are MW3, Black Ops, and Black Ops II respectively. All on the console too. Sorry but the COD franchise "WAS" a PC game first remember? Soooo...whats your point? I know why the console has 24 players. Listen, M$, Sony and Nintendo will not let "any" game company run their servers. Not for any game or any reason, and personally I like it that way!

I don't understand why there are so many people gawking over these specs. We all know how this goes: the PS4 will launch to much fanfare, after which PS4 users will start raving about how much better their little black box is compared to an actual computer. However, what they fail to realize is that their precious little black box will be outdated several months after its release. So, PS4 lovers, enjoy it now while it lasts, but don't cry when you are sitting in the same position as you are now a year after launch. Computer technology advances at a lightning-fast pace, and custom-built rigs, not consoles, will always be on top.

Well based upon the specifications given thus far... The PS4 is already obsolete...
It's supposed to be running a "custom" CPU chip from AMD (cusom is used instead of saying "obsolete"), that is approximated in the 2.0-2.5Ghz range. It's primary power is derived from eight cores, which is great and wonderful, welcome to 2010 when that was considered "new"... The only reason ever more cores aren't constantly added to ever more PC CPU's is that there is very little software necessitating them.
I will grant that advantage to a console where the platform will be singularly unified and all programs written for it will have the same set of criteria to meet as a result of that. Therefore multi-core programs will be a given, and take better advantage of the cores than many PC programs that are often written to the least-common-denominator.
The PS4's GPU is a "custom" version of a ATi/AMD 7870, which isn't a bad card by any means, but it's not even remotely close to bleeding edge technology... It's not ancient, being from early of 2012, but even when it came out it wasn't a "world beater", it's a mid-range card and that's where it has EXCELLENT bank-for-your-buck features...
But it can't even hold a candle to the GTX580, much less the GTX680, and sure as hell not even worth comparing to the Titan, even its own brethren in the 7900 series put it to shame, as well they should...
But anyone touting PS4's specs as "awesome" should be slapped and spend a little time looking up what those specs really mean.
Frankly, the PS4 is nothing more than a mid-range gaming computer... Aside from running a Windows OS (which I'm sure someone will hack it to do), it's just a lobotomized PC with a Sony Playstation emblem.

I'm glad to see that Sony switched over to a X86 chip. The one problem i have with the switch is the fact that it would be totally incompatible with previous PS1 2 3 games.
Cloud emulation for PS3 and lower LOL! The cable companies are gonna be laughing to the bank when people start going over data caps.

Why are ppl worried about the speed of the cpu? Did Sony say they were gonna go from a custom OS of thier own to windows? did I miss that? I think I remeber the point of thier own OS amoung other things was it was much faster at playing games than An OS like windows. Alot of ppl don't like Sony but I think they thought about what kind of cpu they were gonna need for the system they wanted to build as far as speed and cores, not sure what some of you ppl thought you were gonna do on this system besides play the games coded for it.
