  • Writing Assignment: The Pokemon Paradigm

Your assignment is to write up an editorial focusing on the palatial Pokemon production. Deadline to have your entries submitted is April 25th, at 12:00pm PST

Need some inspiration? Consider the following topics:

    - How do you feel about the Pokemon game franchise at this point? Has its decisions to continue to add more beyond the original 150 been a positive experience, or do you perhaps feel that in this particular case less is more and the ever growing numbers of creatures to catch is bogging down the game?

    - If you could revolutionize the franchise by rebooting it, how would you start over? Would you go back to the way things were with Pokemon Red and Blue or would you completely retool the mythos that's been created.

    - How do you feel about the current online Pokemon tournaments? Do you feel that this is just another eSport or do you think that this is a great way for players to immerse themselves in PokeCulture?

    - Where do you think the game will be in the next three years, how about the next five years?

Chalk Talk submissions must include the following:
    - Entries must be a minimum of 500 words
    - Do not use altered text fonts, colors, and be aware of your formatting.
-Select at least one image to act as your "cover shot".
Submissions are due by April 25th, at 12:00pm PST, please submit as either a link in the comments below or the announcement in the Writers Round Table.

We'll perform further site maintenance on Sunday March 10th at 10:00am PST. This performance will cause a site outage which is expected to last approximately two hours. If you have an urge to visit GameSpot during this time drop by our Youtube until the site returns.

  • IMPORTANT: Scheduled Maintenance on March 7th

The code monkeys of GameSpot will be performing tomorrow (Thursday) March 7th at 5:00am PST in a scheduled maintenance performance. This performance will cause a short outage which is expected to last approximately two hours. While you should still be able to browse much of the site as per usual, there are a few features will be unavailable.

Important things to know about the down time:
    - Forums will be down for maintenance, so you will not be able to access them during the 2 hour window.
    - User Blogs will be down for the duration; however user reviews will still be available.
    - Users will stay logged in, as this maintenance only affects forum related activity

If you find yourself with an urge to participate on the site during this time the comments section will still be available on news articles, videos, and features. We have a reboot video blog contest, as well as a new Chalk Talk assignment. You can also keep in touch with us via Twitter, Facebook, or if you're in San Francisco there's always smoke signals.

  • Chalk Talk Assignment: Reboots

    community1_27485_screen.jpg
Your assignment is to write up your editorial focusing on whether or not game reboots are necessary. Deadline to have your entries submitted is Thursday, March 7th by 2:00 pm PT.

All entries must either be submitted in this thread here or sent via PM to the Guest Contributor.

As you are aware, in 2013 we altered the format of Chalk Talk to include contributing editors, next up in the queue for those interested in the roll of Contributing Editor for Chalk Talk is Asagea_888.

    The topic is as follows:
A lot of notable game franchises are getting the re-boot; eshewing a storied history of a single video game and starting it completely fresh.  Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider, Castlevania -- beloved game mainstays are now trying to appeal to a broader audience and, in industry terms, boost its cash flow outside of dedicated fans.  Controversy has often swelled as a result of the decision to reboot games -- as hardcore fans feel alienated by the changes made.

That said, are game reboots necessary?  Can there be a way to keep the integrity of an existing franchise intact and please both fans and newcomers in equal measure? Or are we left with little choice but to compromise the history of an established product to help it stay relevant in today's times?

You decide! Choose which games you wish to discuss in your feature as you build your case.

Chalk Talk submission must include the following:
    - Entries must be a minimum of 500 words.
    - Do not use altered text fonts, colors, and be aware of your formatting.
    - Select at least one image to act as your "cover shot".
    - Entries must be submitted by Thursday, March 7th by 2:00 pm PT.
