Thanksgiving Week Graphic Novel Sales Down from 2007

posted on 2008-12-10 00:18 EST

The ICv2 retail trade news source reports from a Nielsen BookScan survey that American retailers sold 14.7% fewer graphic novels during the week of Thanksgiving this year than they did the same time last year. 244,000 graphic novels were sold in the week ending November 30, while 286,000 were sold in the week ending November 25, 2007. ICv2 attributes the drop in sales in part to the current economic crisis, as well as the higher cover price of the resurgent Watchmen graphic novel, compared to the typically smaller manga volumes that topped last year's graphic novel sales.

Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket volume 22 claimed the number 2 spot on Nielson BookScan's "Top 20 Graphic Novels for November 2008" list published last week. Volume 32 of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto manga ranked 3. Volume 31 followed at the #7 spot.
