Unity ending Flash support

Unity dropping Flash support
Multiplatform game engine Unity is getting a little less multiplatform. "As of today, we will stop selling Flash deployment licenses," CEO David Helgason announced. " We will continue to support our existing Flash customers throughout the 4.x cycle."

Helgason said that the decision to stop supporting Flash was motivated by what Unity sees as a lack of commitment to Flash on the part of Adobe, because of player instability, canceled projects, and various other factors.

Besides which, "Developers are moving away from Flash, and while Flash publishing has gotten little traction, our own Unity Web Player has seen unprecedented growth in recent months."

Robot Unicorn Attack 2 running across App Store regions

Robot Unicorn Attack 2 surprise release on App Store
Robot Unicorn Attack 2 for iOS devices is currently leaping its way westward from New Zealand, with an expected arrival in North America overnight. TouchArcade reports the basics for the sequel stay the same, as players control a rainbow-tailed ever-running unicorn until failure catches up with them.

Changes from the first game include prettier levels and a unicorn customization feature, where players can unlock modifications by collecting tears. The game is free-to-play with tear packs available for real money.

Likely the most controversial change is that Erasure's "Always" is not the game's default track. Adult Swim Games Senior Producer Chris Johnston tells us the reason is music licensing, noting, "Which is partly why the original RUA never went free." The game now features original music by Module.

Call of Duty: Ghosts listed at multiple retailers for PS3, Xbox 360

Call of Duty Ghosts appears at multiple retailers, release date November 5
Call of Duty: Ghosts emerges from the darkness thanks to Target and UK retailer Tesco, with the former advertising a release date of November 5. Meanwhile, a Tesco listing notes a release date of December 30 - early November is the traditional Call of Duty ETA. The box art posted on Tesco (see below the break for a snippet) features Infinity Ward's logo.

We know (as if we didn't before) that Activision has another edition of its shooter series slated for this year. "The Call of Duty franchise continues to set the bar for innovation," company CFO Dennis Durkin said during Activision's February earnings call, "And we expect the new Call of Duty game in development for 2013 to raise that bar even higher."

We've reached out to Activision for comment.

Moga Pro controller makes Android games better

We got our hands on one of PowerA's new Moga Pro Android controllers, and so we decided to put together a little video detailing how it works. The Moga Pro is a full-sized console styled controller, complete with a cradle to attach Android phones (and a separate stand for tablets).

Overall, the experience of using the Moga Pro is a good one, providing much greater control compared to Android's usual touch screen controls. First-person shooters in particular are dramatically better, and the benefits for a reflex-intensive game like Pac-Man are obvious. We did notice a small amount of input lag while playing R-Type, but this seems to be a software issue, as other games like Dead Trigger played just fine.

There's also a strange bug in R-Type that can force users to exit other games and go back into R-Type. We contacted PowerA, and the bug seems to be confined specifically to R-Type. PowerA is reaching out to its developers to get it fixed.

The Moga Pro is available now for $50. Watch the video above for a full rundown.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 'Mob of the Dead' soundtrack out now

The moody tunes of Treyarch's Mob of the Dead, a special Zombies mode variant included in the "Uprising" DLC pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, are now available for purchase. You can pick up the album on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, and Spotify for $10; or you can purchase each track individually.

Mob of the Dead takes place in Alcatraz during the Prohibition era, and focuses on four convicts – played by Ray Liotta, Joe Pantoliano, Michael Madsen and Chazz Palminteri – trying to escape a zombie onslaught spilling into the island prison. It's the first Zombies map in Call of Duty history where players can successfully complete the level and survive without succumbing to the undead.

XCOM shooter re-reveal expected this week

Image
2K Marin's XCOM shooter recently had all its official assets removed from the internet, which now appears to have been prep work for a new reveal of the game later this week. According to a 2K Games post, the XCOM "squad-based tactical shooter in development at 2K Marin" will be shown again.

It was a little surprise back in February when Take-Two (2K Games' parent company) announced during its financial call that the XCOM shooter was still in production and expected before March 31, 2014.

Firaxis' refresh of the original strategy game, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, launched last year to "critical and commercial success." It seems we're about to live in a world where two genres of XCOM live in peaceful coexistence (for a time, anyway).

Satoru Iwata to assume Nintendo of America CEO role

Nintendo president Saturo Iwata will assume the additional role of Nintendo of America Chief Executive Officer, overseeing NoA President and Chief Operating Officer Reggie Fils-Aime, who remains in place. The move is one of several board changes in the wake of planned retirements.

The executive-level musical chairs will see Iwata replace current NoA chairman and CEO Tatsumi Kimishima, who will transfer to Nintendo's Kyoto headquarters as the General Manager of Corporate Analysis and Administration, and General Manager of the General Affairs Division.

In a statement, Nintendo said the move will support "the company's unified global strategy" and "allow streamlined decision making and enhance Nintendo's organizational agility in the current competitive environment."

Nintendo released its fiscal-year financial statement this morning, with the company's net profits almost half of its projections at just over ¥7 billion, or around $71 million.

Wii U shipments miss targets at 3.45M, projected 9M for next fiscal year

The Wii U shipped 3.45 million units worldwide as of March 31, a figure well short of the 4 million projected in January, itself adjusted from initial forecasts of 5.5 million. That means the Wii U only shipped around 390,000 units worldwide in the last three months.

In a financial statement, Nintendo said its console failed to "maintain the initial sales momentum" due to delays of subsequent games, and the company aims to remedy this in the second half of this year through to next year by "releasing key Nintendo titles." The company believes this'll help the Wii U attain its projected shipping figures of 9 million for the next fiscal year (April 1 2013 to March 31 2014).

Nintendo's fiscal year net profits came in at almost half the company's projections, down from a projected ¥14 billion to just over ¥7 billion, or around $71 million. The figure nonetheless represents significant turnaround from the ¥43 billion net loss posted for the previous fiscal year. Nintendo forecasts net profits of ¥55 billion for its next fiscal year.

3DS shipping figures continue to climb, with the handheld now at 31.09 million, up over a million in the last quarter. The Wii remains short of the 100M mark at 99.84 million. The Wii outperformed the Wii U in the last quarter, shipping 70,000 units more at 460,000.

Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi coming to the 3DS in America

Hakuoki Memories of the Shinsengumi coming to US 3DSes
Aksys Games has announced a North American release of Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi on the Nintendo 3DS. The game is based on Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, which made it to the PSP last February.

The female-focused "otome" romance game comes to Nintendo's handheld with new story content and some 3DS-specific features, like 3D graphics and the ability to take your potentially creepster picture with the story's main characters.

No release date has been announced yet, but those interested can stay tuned to the official site for more.

Mega Man 3 soundtrack now available

Mega Man 3 OST now available
A digital version of Mega Man 3's official soundtrack is now available through Capcom's equally intangible web store, for the default price of $8.95.

The 39 track album includes such classics as "Shall we go on a Magnetic Continuous tour?" and the game's title screen theme, which has been scientifically proven to be one of the most effective pump-up jams of all time.

The soundtrack was composed by Capcom composer/sound designer Yasuaki Fujita, under the alias "Bun Bun." Fujita was also responsible for the soundtracks to NES versions of The Little Mermaid and Darkwing Duck, as well as Panic in Nakayoshi World, which as far as we can tell is some kind of Sailor Moon/Bomberman thing.

Twin Galaxies accepting record score submissions, now at a cost

Twin Galaxies is accepting record score submissions, now at a cost
Legendary arcade scoring organization Twin Galaxies had to take a break from tracking scores for about six months as the company went through a transition last year, but as of last week it's back in business and ready for score submissions.

There is one catch, however. The company charge to report your scores: $25 for one submission, $60 for three submissions, or $75 for five submissions. Each score submission requires video proof – you may include more than one score in the video – but each video can only cover one game. If you want to submit both Donkey Kong and Rampage scores, for example, you'll need to pay twice.

The new ownership says the old database was "damaged yet not completely irretrievable," and the fees will go towards smoothing out the verification process and evolving the website "beyond its status as the premier competitive scoring service, and into an interactive gaming platform."

So, think you can do better than Hank Chien?

Guild Wars 2 gets a retro 2D platformer, thanks to an April Fools' joke

Guild Wars 2 gets a retro 2D platformer, thanks to an April Fools' joke
ArenaNet, the developer behind Guild Wars 2, has released a 2D platformer called Rytlock's Critter Rampage, available to play for free in your browser.

The game's derived from an '80s-style commercial the company made as an April Fools' joke earlier this month. The commercial itself was for a 3D platformer called Super Adventure Box, which ArenaNet also created for real inside its popular MMO.

ArenaNet says Rytlock's Critter Rampage was going to be cobbled together from a few sprites for the sake of the joke, but cinematic artist Delly Sartika had wanted to build a retro platformer and did the whole thing in about three weeks.

NCAA Football 14 to include offline-only Kinect support

NCAA Football 14 to support Kinect, gets official cover art
While Kinect integration isn't all that new for EA Sports, as both Madden 13 and FIFA 13 included support for the device last year, the Xbox 360 cover art for NCAA Football 14 includes the "Better with Kinect" banner at the top. EA Sports told Joystiq that Kinect support will be for offline play only, and will be "similar to what we've done in Madden, focused on pre-play voice commands."

Check out the hi-res versions of the game's box art, which features speedy-looking Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, in the gallery below. NCAA 14 will sprint to Xbox 360 and PS3 on July 9.

Road Redemption targeting Wii U, pending Kickstarter success

Road Redemption pulls up to the starting line on Wii U
Road Redemption, a spiritual successor to Road Rash currently seeking funding through Kickstarter, will be ported to Wii U by Dark Seas Games if it successfully secures support.

Dark Seas Games lauded the Wii U's tablet controller as a great tool for local multiplayer, bypassing the need to split the primary screen. The developer also considered support of the Unity engine and the Wii U's 2GB of internal memory as deciding factors for porting Road Redemption.

Road Redemption hopes to launch on PC, Mac, Linux and Wii U in July should it meet the goal of $160,000 on Kickstarter. It has pulled in close to $60,000 so far.

Earth Defense Force 2025 video showcases vehicles, big ol' bugs

Those dang space bugs are at it again. D3 Publisher is set to release Earth Defense Force 2025 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year, and the new gameplay video above shows off the many ways in which players can tear through insectoid alien hordes.

A "heavy" unit type similar to the Battle Armor class in Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon makes an appearance, as does the jetpack-equipped Pale Wing class (seen recently in the PS Vita port of Earth Defense Force 2017). Other new stuff includes lock-on weaponry, a motorbike (with sidecar), and vehicles that seem better equipped – and hopefully sturdier – than the fragile craft featured in EDF 2017.

The Japanese version of Earth Defense Force 2025 will launch in July. A US release has been announced, but a specific release date is not yet known.
