The Experiment in Congregational Education's Online Learning Experience, which allows congregations to explore alternative models for their religious schools
This is the "e-learning" mission which guides the multi-talented, five-member team in the department's national office, located on the Los Angeles campus of HUC-JIR. Since its inception in 1999, the department's innovative, high-caliber and varied efforts have produced Online Learning Modules, Virtual Resource Centers, Alumni Study Programs, and numerous course and learning support tools. Its work is directed toward faculty and students on all four campuses of HUC-JIR, as well as alumni and other members of the College-Institute's extended family in the U.S., Canada, Israel, and throughout the world.

Pushing the envelope of e-learning's true potential is what drives many of the department's programs. For example, the seven-section Virtual Resource Center on Sexual Orientation Issues in the Jewish Community, one of the department's first major projects, includes annotated guides to all of its resources and complete text study modules with original analysis; the ECE Online Learning Experience allows congregational task forces who are re-imagining their religious schools to virtually interview and visit innovative programs and participants throughout the country without leaving their own community; and the department's current development of Mechinah: Preparing Oneself... which is a year-long, online course of study that includes a layered approach to Jewish Cultural Literacy, offers students a unique framework for how to think about and how to understand Jewish life as a whole.
