ISRAEL RABBINICAL PROGRAM
HUC-JIR provides a program leading to rabbinical ordination for
Israeli students.
Academic Requirements for Acceptance into the Program
Admission to the program is restricted to Israeli citizens who
have completed their military service. Applicants must possess a
Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited university, and have
been officially admitted by an Israeli university as an M.A. candidate
in one of their departments of Jewish Studies.
Formal application for admission includes:
1. Academic records, standard psychological and competency examinations
as determined by the faculty, letters of recommendation, an essay
on the applicant's motivation, goals, etc.
2. An interview by an admissions committee to explore the candidate's
intellectual and spiritual potential and capacity for leadership
in Israel.
The Structure of the Program
The optimum period of study is four years. In no case will a student
study for less than five semesters or more than fourteen semesters.
The Program comprises three sections:
1. Professional and Spiritual Development
The College-Institute requires its Israel rabbinical students to
complete a number of course requirements in areas relating to professional
and spiritual development: Liturgy Workshop, Pastoral Counseling,
Introduction to Community Work, Communication Skills, etc. Furthermore,
students are required to engage in study of traditional texts beyond
the formal requirements of the M.A.H.L. Program. Students are also
required to serve congregations and institutions of Progressive
Judaism in Israel under professional supervision during their years
of study.
2. Academic Specialization
In order to gain expertise in at least one discipline of Jewish
Studies, students are required to enroll for a course of advanced
studies at an Israeli university parallel to their studies at the
College-Institute. It is preferred that students complete an additional
M.A., although in certain cases an alternative arrangement may be
approved by the academic advisors at the College-Institute.
