Graduate Fellowships

The Stanley Aronoff Interfaith Fellowship, established in his honor by friends and colleagues.

The Isaac and Rachael Berg Fellowship Fund, established by Mrs. Millie E. Levy and Albert A. Berg of New York, New York, to provide a one-year fellowship to a graduate to pursue scientific work in the field of Jewish learning.

The Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Interfaith Fellowship, established by friends of His Eminence and the HUC-JIR Chicago Associates, for a graduate student in the School of Graduate Studies.

The Avram Biran Fellowship in Biblical Archaeology, at the Nelson Glueck School of Biblical Archaeology in Jerusalem, endowed in honor of Avram Biran by the Haas Family of San Francisco, California.

The Sheldon H. Blank Graduate Fellowship in Bible, established in honor of Dr. Sheldon H. Blank by alumni and faculty of HUC-JIR, his family, and friends.

The Herbert R. Bloch Memorial Fellowship, established by the family and friends of the late Herbert R Bloch, Sr., of Cincinnati, Ohio, for advanced study in American Jewish history and education at the Cincinnati School.

The Leon Findlay Interfaith Fellowship, in memory of Leon Findlay, for a graduate student in the School of Graduate Studies.

The Julia and Leo Forchheimer Fellowship Fund, endowed by the Forchheimer Foundation, the income to be devoted to scholarships and fellowships for rabbinical and graduate students.

The Gottesman Foundation Fellowship, established at the New York School for the study of religious education, to be awarded to a student interested in a career in Jewish education.

The Bertha Guggenheimer Fellowship, established to permit a graduate of the College-Institute to spend a year in Israel for research and study. This fellowship is also available to members of the faculty.

The Elizabeth Hausman and Myer Hausman Memorial Fund, established by the Myer Hausman Trust, to provide fellowships for graduates of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

The Edward L. Heinsheimer Memorial Fellowship, endowed by Mrs. Edward L. Heinsheimer of Cincinnati, Ohio, in memory of her husband, chairman of the Board of Governors of the College-Institute, 1910-1917. This fellowship is awarded to a student who pursues advanced rabbinical studies leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the Cincinnati School.

The Rhea Hirsch Memorial Fellowship Fund, established by the R. David Hirsch Foundation, to provide fellowships for Ph.D. students in Jewish education.

The Ilse Hitchman Fellowship, established by a bequest of Mrs. Ilse Hitchman of San Mateo, California, the income to be used to further understanding between members of various religions.

The Rabbi Robert I. Kahn and Rabbi Hyman J. Schachtel Interfaith Fellowship Fund, established in their honor by the Houston, Texas community.

The Ethel D. Klein Fellowship, established by a bequest of Bernard D. Klein, Long Island City, New York, in memory of his wife, to be awarded to a graduating rabbinical senior to pursue advanced studies.

The Kosberg Family Interfaith Scholarship Fund, established by Mr. and Mrs. J. Livingston Kosberg of Houston, Texas, to be awarded to an interfaith graduate student for the duration of his/her studies at HUC-JIR.

The Erna and Julius Krouch Fund, established by Miss Erna Krouch and her brother, Julius Krouch, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for study designed to build bridges of knowledge and understanding between Christians and Jews.

The Dr. David Lefkowitz Interfaith Fellowship, established in honor of Rabbi David Lefkowitz, by his friends and admirers in Dallas, Texas, for graduate Christian clergymen preparing to teach in theological seminaries.

The Jack P. Lewis Interfaith Fellowship, established by Dr. Jack P. Lewis of Memphis, a graduate of the School of Graduate Studies.

The Julius and Hildegard Lewy Fellowship, established by a bequest of Mrs. Hildegard Lewy of Cincinnati, Ohio, for interfaith fellowships in the School of Graduate Studies.

The Carl H. Lindner Interfaith Fellowship, established in his honor by friends and colleagues.

The Manuel D. and Rhoda Mayerson Foundation Fellowship.

The Isadore and Goldie Millstone Fellowship Fund, established to provide four fellowships annually in the Graduate Program.

The Mrs. Henry Morgenthau Fellowship, endowed by Mrs. Henry Morgenthau of New York, New York, to be awarded for one year to a graduate of the College-Institute who has shown interest in and demonstrated ability to pursue scientific work in the field of Jewish learning.

The William J. Motto Family/Barbara Gould Interfaith Scholarship.

The Ella H. Philipson Graduate Fellowship, established by Rabbi David Philipson in memory of his beloved wife. The Gabriel and Bertha Pollock Fund, established by the Julian G. and Alice Pollock Fund in memory of their parents, to be awarded to a worthy graduate of the College-Institute, preferably a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Robert Popper Fellowship, established by Mr. and Mrs. Emil Popper, to be awarded in memory of their son, Robert Popper.

The Joseph and Helen Regenstein Foundation Fellowship, established in support of the Interfaith Fellowship Program of the School of Graduate Studies.

The Dr. Samuel Sandmel Fellowship in Bible and Hellenistic Literature, established by friends of the late Dr. Samuel Sandmel.

The S. H. and Helen R. Scheuer Graduate Fellowships, established by the late S. H. Scheuer of New York, New York, to be awarded to Ph.D. candidates.

The Betsy and Lawrence Shapiro Interfaith Fellowship Endowment, established by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence J. Shapiro, Cincinnati.

The Max A. Shapiro Award in Graduate Studies, established by Temple Israel of Minneapolis in honor of Rabbi Max A. Shapiro's thirty years of service to the congregation, to be awarded to worthy students in the graduate interfaith program.

The Leo W. Simon Memorial Fellowship, established by Mrs. Jacob Wertheim of New York, New York, in memory of Leo W. Simon, beloved son of Caroline and Rabbi Abram Simon of Washington, D.C. Reflecting the deep interest of Leo W. Simon in general and Jewish philosophy, this fellowship is designed to enable a worthy graduate of the College-Institute to pursue advanced studies in Jewish philosophy.

The Rose Skillman Interfaith Fellowship, established in her memory by the Skillman Foundation of Detroit, Michigan.

The Norman Topping Scholarship Fund, established at the Edgar F. Magnin School of Graduate Studies in Los Angeles, California, by friends of Dr. Norman Topping.

The Harris and Alice Weston Interfaith Fellowship.

The J. Clarence Workum and Corale B. Workum Fellowship, established under the will of Mrs. Corale B. Workum of Cincinnati, Ohio. The annual income payment by the trustees of this fund is to be used for the study of ancient and modern Hebrew religion at the Cincinnati School and to be awarded to students promoting inter-religious relations between Jews and non-Jews.

The Ernest G. Wright Annual Fellowship in Archaeology at The Nelson Glueck School of Biblical Archaeology in Jerusalem, established by the Scheuer Foundation.

The Jacob Ziskind Memorial Fund, established by the Jacob Ziskind Trust for Charitable Purposes, provides for the awarding of research fellowships or the financing of publications. Fellowships financed through this fund are designated "Jacob Ziskind Memorial Fellowships," and publications financed through the fund are identified as "Jacob Ziskind Memorial Publications."


Fellowships - American Jewish Archives

The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives Fellowships are awarded to qualified scholars conducting serious research in some area relating to the history of North American Jewry. They are typically provided to Ph.D. candidates who are completing dissertations and to senior or independent scholars. The Fellowship Program provides recipients with month-long fellowships at The Marcus Center, located on the Cincinnati campus of HUC-JIR.
