"Years before we were able to delve into and appreciate the worlds of Tolkien, we became the heroes of this adventure story." The project is headed by Joe Granato, who hopes to tell the stories of those who have been inspired and touched by The Legend of Zelda franchise, and "will examine the pervasive fascination for 8-bit gaming beyond nostalgia." Mario-themed box appears on an Arizona street, prompting bomb squad inquiry

A mysterious box familiar to players of Nintendo's Super Mario games appeared on a residential street in Tempe, Ariz. last week, prompting local police and fire officials to cordon off the area as they searched the package. Residents of the area discovered the box (pictured above) and contacted local authorities, who sent fire and police officers — including a bomb squad — to the scene to investigate. Inside the gold box, which was decorated with white question marks like those found in Mario games, bomb technicians found "miscellaneous papers" but no threat, according to a report from ABC 15. According to a resident, the heightened sense of caution stemmed from the recent bombings during the Boston Marathon. "I thought it was a prank," a local resident told ABC 15. "You know, a...

Wii U version of Karateka 'never went into development,' says producer

The studio behind Jordan Mechner's 2012 remake of Karateka considered putting the title on Wii U, but that version "never went into development," assistant producer Heather D'Evelyn told Nintendo Everything. Liquid Entertainment released Karateka on Xbox Live Arcade last November, and on PlayStation Network, Windows PC and iOS in December. An ESRB listing from last August rated the title on those platforms as well as on Wii U. D'Evelyn said that Liquid thought about a Wii U version "at the beginning of the project but [it] never went into development." D'Evelyn added that Liquid has no plans to make a Wii U version at this time. We asked D'Evelyn in December about a potential Android version of Karateka; at the time, she told Polygon that Liquid had "no official plans right now, but...

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will require two copies of the game in order to play multiplayer, according to a listing on the official site. In the new mode, Diddy and Donkey can take up to five hits from an enemy thanks to the increase of hearts from two to three. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag writer describes challenges of writing for a game versus a movie

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is the latest entry in a franchise with an action-heavy, complex story, and lead writer Darby McDevitt described the unique challenges of writing for the game in an interview with GameSpot. While the Assassin's Creed titles include many cinematic sequences, it's gameplay that drives everything forward, which forces Black Flag's writing staff to collaborate closely with its game designers, said McDevitt. "I have to end a lot of these scenes with a clear gameplay objective," he explained. "It has to be like, 'Let's steal that ship,' or, 'Let's do this physical thing that the player can now say I know how to accomplish that through the gameplay mechanics.'" McDevitt also pointed out that game writers have to remain mindful of the constraints of the medium:...

Polygon had a chance to go hands-on with the new Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past sequel, and we've shared a new feature about designer Andy Schatz of Pocketwatch Games' Monaco. Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D 'really leverages the 3DS,' Bill Trinen says

One of the reasons why Nintendo decided to bring Donkey Kong Country Returns to the 3DS is because its original design for the Wii translates well into 3D, according to Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen. Speaking to Polygon, Trinen said when the game was originally designed for the Wii, it was a side-scrolling platformer that had multiple layers, which translates well into the 3D environment. "So you'd have side-scrolling on this one layer, then you might jump back to the rear layer," he said. "So it created this sense of depth in the platformer that the teams thought would work really well using 3D visuals for the Nintendo 3DS. "You'll also notice that, on the 3DS, the game looks particularly nice when you have Donkey Kong charge into the rocket barrels and the barrels blast toward...

A Link To The Past 2's wall movement will introduce new ways of solving puzzles

Nintendo's 3DS sequel to The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past will allow Link to "merge" with walls, which Nintendo spokesperson Bill Trinen says will create "new opportunities for puzzle solving," and change the way players interact with the game world. The sequel to A Link To The Past was announced by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata at yesterday's Nintendo Direct. One of the new gameplay mechanics introduced in the 3DS version of the game is the ability for Link to switch into a 2D sketch mode and merge with walls. When Link merges with a wall, the camera shifts from an overhead perspective so players can see Link on the wall as he moves around. If the wall turns a corner, Link turns a corner. "Even if you've played [A Link To The Past] and are familiar with it, this is going to...

Injustice: Gods Among Us DLC will include more costumes, 'no plans' for more stages

Future downloadable content for DC brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us may include more than the four additional characters initially planned, but will likely not include more battle stages, NetherRealm Studios creative director Ed Boon told Game Informer. According to Boon, there are currently "no plans" to add additional stages to the title, and beyond the four planned characters there "isn't anything [NetherRealm] can announce" right now. However, he did not rule out the possibility of more playable characters. "I certainly don't think I can safely say that it's four and only four," Boon said. "The DLC characters for Mortal Kombat exceeded everybody's expectations. I suppose there is a certain point in time where we can say that there won't be more. I don't think we'll be releasing...

Renegade Kid co-founder tells his story of going indie

Renegade Kid, the studio behind 3DS indie titles such as Mutant Mudds, came to a turning point last year regarding the security of its future, and the company chose the path that fit with its name, said co-founder Jools Watsham on his blog this week. The studio launched Mutant Mudds on the 3DS eShop last January. Watsham described the self-funded, self-published platformer as a "labor of love" and said its profitability wasn't a major concern for the company. "When we published the game it felt like a perfect gamble and allowed us to be able to accept the possibility of no sales because our emotional bank accounts were filled by the completion of the game," explained Watsham. "We were proud of what we achieved." After releasing Mutant Mudds, Renegade Kid returned to its typical...
