Japan Review Check: Game & Wario, Dragon's Dogma, Tomb Raider

A quick look at the highlights among the games coming out in Japan this coming week, courtesy the review pages of Famitsu magazine: Game & Wario (8/8/7/8, 31 out of 40 points): This Wii U minigame complication came out on March 28, but — as with a lot of WiiU titles — Famitsu didn't publish their review until pretty well after the game hit stores. One wonders if that has anything to do with the general disappointment that seeps through most of the reviewers' text blurbs. "Only four out of the 16 games included are multiplayer," wrote editor Atsuhiro Fujiwara, "which may not feel like enough for some people. However, each game gets harder and offers up new gimmicks the more you get into them, so it's all pretty enjoyably. The game where you have to draw pictures based on topics...

Quantic Dream head discusses Japanese games and his take on the PS4

Have you ever wanted to ask Quantic Dream founder and CEO David Cage — a man who's certainly known for his deep and heavily character-driven games — what he thinks about the Japanese game scene? Famitsu magazine had that opportunity this week, and the answer may surprise you, given the tendency many designers have had in recent years to downplay Japan's achievements. "I've loved Japan's games for a long time, and I've always been playing them," he said. "My personal impression is that Japanese games have high creativity and really cut through the mold. Really, Western games have a tendency to just repeat the same things over and over again and be hesitant to change. I really think Japan's creators are the ones making more ambitious challenges with their work." Given what titles...

Sega announces more Hatsune Miku rhythm action malarkey for the 3DS

Any otaku worth his or her salt knows about Hatsune Miku, the singing-synthesizer persona that's ballooned into a massive line of spin-off media over in Japan. The virtual idol's done wonders for Sega's bottom line over in Asia, and Hatsune Miku and Future Stars: Project Mirai, the most recent Nintendo 3DS game starring the character, has sold over 150,000 copies in Japan. Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai 2 was announced for the 3DS in this week's Famitsu magazine, and so far it looks like it offers more of the same for the otaku faithful. The basic game structure hasn't changed at all — you help Miku and pals sing and dance through a variety of peppy tunes, unlocking costumes for your idol troupe and "modules" you can decorate your virtual room with. The big change: All songs can be...

Klei Entertainment's founder says struggles of AAA devs are fueling independent dev scene

Klei Entertainment's founder Jamie Cheng believes the recent struggles of big AAA developers have given rise to the independent game development expansion, according to an interview with GamesIndustry International. "With all the changes and layoffs, we're seeing so many new studios come up that are doing these games without the crutch of hundreds of millions of dollars of marketing...I think for sure that the layoffs are fuelling way more development in the small, independent space," Cheng told GamesIndustry. That said, Cheng pointed out that AAA developers are still needed as sources of trained talent for independent development studios. "I enjoy having the large AAA around because they were hiring and training tons of people, and I can't do that," Cheng said. "We have 30 people...

Dustforce dev shows how Humble Bundle and Steam sales fueled game's success

The developer of 2D "sweep-'em-up" platformer Dustforce, Hitbox Team, offered detailed sales data on its PC game today, illustrating how Steam sales and inclusion in a Humble Bundle had a substantial impact on the financial success and exposure of the game. Hitbox Team's Terence Lee wrote in a post on the developer's website that the small team developed Dustforce from prototype to full game over the course of a year and a half, primarily living — rather frugally — off $100,000 in proceeds won from a game development contest. To sustain themselves and fund development of their next game, Hitbox estimated they'd need to bring in around $300,000 to $400,000 with Dustforce. On the game's first day on sale through Steam, Lee wrote, "we sold 4,796 copies — a revenue of $44,141." "It...

After stating and reiterating that he currently has no plans to make another Monkey Island title, Gilbert launched into a detailed 15-point breakdown of what a hypothetical sixth Monkey Island game would be and how he would go about making it. Gilbert said he would have to own the Monkey Island intellectual property in order to begin, and promised that if he were able to secure it, he would sanction the development of Monkey Island fan games as long as their makers respected the source material. Razer looking into 90 percent discount code found in UK Razer store (updated)

Razer's online store in the U.K. is allowing users to input a simple promo code to receive a 90 percent discount on their order, but representatives with the company say they don't know why. A Razer spokesperson told Polygon that the company didn't intentionally set up this discount, saying, "We're looking into exactly what it is, but there's no 90 percent off promotion." We were informed of the promo code — "1234" — in an anonymous tip, and were able to verify it ourselves on the checkout page of the Razer Store (see image below). We were unable to get the code to work in the U.S. store, and many items in the store are now listed as backordered or out of stock Update: Added comment from Razer representatives. >
