Will game exclusivity damage gaming?

Please. Stop.

no.

Nope. In fact, what's ruining gaming is the lack of exclusivity. It was a much stronger industry when each system had its exclusive strengths and weaknesses. Watering everything down has only served to harm the industry, not help it.
There should be MORE platform exclusives. Not less.

It depends, if the game could be played on all platforms or at least more than one without content loss then it might even give less profit (e.g. Halo would sell a fucking ton if MS released it on PC, or even Metal Gear Solid) although they boost the console sales
If the game actually uses resources that only that specific platform(s) use then it must remain an exclusive (Tearaway works great on Vita's touch screen and Soul Sacrifice wouldn't be so appealing on a PS3)

I don't see how Soul Sacrifice couldn't work on PS3. Tearaway, yes, that definitely can only be done on Vita.
For me, I just look at the difference in graphics between MGS4 and MGR whenever it comes to wanting evidence of how much better a console exclusive can be, rather than something that has to be made so everybody can play it.

There are pros and cons to platform exclusivity. Being exclusive to any given platform means you can make the most of that platform whereas multiplatform games are inevitably bottlenecked by the lowest common denominator.
On the other hand, given the rising costs of AAA game development these days, we'd be seeing far fewer big-budget games if they were all platform-exclusive. That may or may not be a bad thing, depending on your perspective, but no one can really argue that variety is bad. Also, I've had little to no interest in console exclusives over the past decade. Killzone, Halo, Uncharted, Gears of War, inFamous, God of War... none of them are particularly unique or ambitious. By far, the multiplatform games are the ones that have drawn my attention. Dishonored, Bioshock, Deus Ex, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect, Batman, Borderlands, XCOM, Saint's Row, Dark Souls, etc... while all of these would likely be better if they were PC-exclusive, they probably wouldn't even get made if PC (or any single platform) was their only market.

@clupula: man i think you finally need a vita. i was struggling with that thing and even traded in my first one, but this time i am really loving it. imo games like persona are even better on a handheld. they can suck you in on a handheld even more. it is hard to explain but to me this happens all the time with a lot of games. ni no kuni could benefit a lot from the touchpad. even if only classic inputs are used in a game i still think some would benefit just from being on a handheld. a game like soul sacrifice does not have the production costs of a bioshock infinite still you can get immersed in that game just the same because handheld gaming feels more personal, more intense really. it is this awesome game in this tiny machine. you are easier impressed, maybe more forgiving too. at least i am. same goes for the new sly game. i prefer to play it on the vita. on there i am just wowed by the game, on the ps3 not as much eventhough it is the same game. i hope for a walking dead port too because i would prefer to play it on the vita. same goes for ni no kuni: stopped playing, decided to wait a year or so, hoping for a vita port. same can be said for fighting games. not my fave genre. on a handheld i like them. i have a fancy full hdtv and great sennheiser phones for my console gaming but sometimes inferiour handhelds beat all that stuff just by having the more charming version of the same game. just my opinion tho of course.
topic: for consumers exclusives only "kind of" suck. sure, i would love to have a machine that plays zelda, halo and ratchet....but this isn't happening any time soon. exclusives are needed to create a special profile for each company, an image. they need them. ms needs some more of them indeed and i think we will see some interesting stuff for their nextbox and their surface or whatever they'll show, handheldwise for that thing, i am sure they' ll integrate something tabletstyle with their nextbox. not a fan of exclusives because they usually are good, so i want to play them, so i run and buy the consoles i need to do that...but see? thats exactly what they are supposed to do. they hurt my wallet but not gaming in general i think. at least they are quality games almost all the time and i enjoyed many of the exclusives. so it really is a love/ hate kind of thing.

@polygem - One day, I will probably get one, just to pass the time when on the set or on tour, but not until it's below $200, close to $150.

i see. probably really a bad idea to buy one right now, i mean you can literally smell a pricedrop coming with all the new consoles coming out soon. memory cards need a pricecut too. i am enjoying the vita a lot atm, never thought i would as much as i do now, but it is how it is.
man you are still touring? i thought you are in your 30's too. i played in a lot of hardcore bands in the 90's, early 00's. i played lots of shows all over europe together with other european bands but also with many us bands like hot water music, locust, get up kids, burning airlines, at the drive in. i am not so sure if i would survive a tour these days. i need my sleep...and a bed, not a floor covered with beer and urine.Posted 1 hour ago # -
I am in my thirties. I'm actually a year older than you. However, most people who see me still think I'm in my mid-twenties.
But yeah, we're trying to plan something for the fall. I was forced to be away from music for four years due to fighting off deafness, so I'm not giving this up until I can't perform anymore. My dad was still directing porn and dating women younger than me into his 60's. As long as you keep doing what you love, you don't age.
I'm one of those crazy people, anyway, who doesn't need a home or a bed or anything like that. In fact, at times, I feel like they're distractions and I get annoyed whenever I deal with musicians who prefer comfort over 12 hour practices and starving so they can pay for studio space. lol
I'm a little bit of a fanatic when it comes to that sort of thing. I've slept on floors, in cars, with women I wasn't even attracted to, just to be able to perform. I know other people get really tired of this life, very quickly, but it's what I prefer more than anything. It's just the time before a show, where absolutely nothing happens, that I find myself considering a portable system for. I don't know how many hours of my life I've logged just sitting in a club watching a bigger band do a soundcheck or waiting for the soundguy to get there or whatever else causes me to sit for hours at a time, waiting for something to happen.

haha. see, i´d certainly say i am still kinda handsome and fit as well (lol), i look younger too and i am kind of fit because i love swimming, it just relaxes me, and i got a dog so i am out a lot. my beard makes me look a bit older these days since i am growing it out now.
i am not in a band anymore for what is it?... 6 years or so and i really start to miss it. friends of mine, we played a lot of shows with back in the days, just formed a new band a year ago and it works well for them, they just toured the us, smallest of small clubs but that´s not what counts anyway. i must admit that i am jealous. i definitley slept at places a rat would avoid, actually the right side of my face is partly paralized because rat shit got in my ear and partly killed a facial nerve. true story. this sounds worse than it looks though, most people do not even realize it and women seem to find this even attractive ;). i am definitley not someone who needs luxury, i do not need comfort much but i am honestly not so sure if i could handle a 4 week tour with no beds and a broken van anymore...i would definitley need a vita in that case though, that´s for sure;)Posted 6 minutes ago #
