MOSCOW, March 19 (RIA Novosti) – Infographics by the RIA Novosti Design Center have won two silver and one bronze medals at the prestigious international contest Malofiej 21, which was held as part of the Infographics World Summit. The silver medals went to infographics published in the Moskovskiye Novosti newspaper (RIA Novosti Group) about the principles behind the Curiosity Mars rover, as well as a publication on the RIA Novosti website of a portfolio of work in the special category "Centenary of the Titanic Sinking." Bronze went to the infographics "Ostankino Tower," published on the agency's website in both Russian and English.

The Malofiej contest awards prizes to the best infographics published in print and online media around the world. This year the competition received 1,191 entries from 154 media outlets, which is a record number in comparison to previous contests. An expert jury awarded a total of 147 prizes for works published by 92 print media outlets and 55 online media outlets. The award ceremony for the winners took place in Pamplona in Spain on March 15.

The silver medal for the special category "Centenary of the Titanic Sinking" marked a series of infographic works by RIA Novosti dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

The infographic The Biggest and Most Luxurious Liner of Its Day with 3D elements gives a detailed and clear description of the construction, equipment and interior of the legendary ship. The following staff of the RIA Novosti infographics studio were involved in its creation: editor Ilya Kanygin, graphic designer Pavel Karaulov, graphic visualizers Aleksandr Volkov, Aleksei Pavlov, Lyudmila Alkhazova and Andrei Krashenov, and flash technology expert Vladimir Terentyev.

Another infographic Titanic, Time Machine recreates the events on board the liner from the time it left England to the tragic collision with an iceberg in the North Atlantic. The contributors to this work were: Ilya Kanygin, Pavel Karaulov and Vladimir Terentyev.

The infographic Timeline of the Sinking of the Titanic gives a minute-by-minute account of the liner's collision with the iceberg off the southern coast of Newfoundland, the sinking of the ship and the subsequent rescue of passengers and members of the crew. Working on this piece were Ilya Kanygin, Andrei Krashenov, graphic designer Yekaterina Chugunkina and flash technology expert Aleksei Seliverstov.

The second silver medal was won for the infographic that outlines the principles behind the Curiosity Mars rover by the team of designers Timur Ageyev, Konstantin Kakovkin and Mikhail Simakov.

The bronze medal in the category Science, Technology, Medicine and Health went to the infographic on the Ostankino Tower by a team made up of Ilya Kanygin, Aleksandr Volkov, designer Nadezhda Andrianova and copy editor Yelena Pridannikova.

This is the second triumph at the Malofiej contest for RIA Novosti designers and artists. Last year a series of infographic works by RIA Novosti won prizes in the online media category.

"Two silver and one bronze medals. This is confirmation of the fact that the RIA Novosti infographics studio and the infographic sections of the Moskovskiye Novosti newspaper are developing on the right track. I am proud of the enthusiasm and dedication which the designers, editors, 3D visualizers and programmers from the RIA Novosti Group put into their work. All of us are of course pleased with such distinguished awards, this is after all the first time Russian infographics designers have won silver at this competition," said RIA Novosti art director Ilya Ruderman.

SND Malofiej is the Spanish branch of the Society for News Design, which was founded in 1979 in the United States.
