Assassin's Creed sneaks into SoulCalibur V

By Jonathan Leo Toyad, Brendan Sinclair

Assassin's Creed: Revelations protagonist Ezio Auditore revealed as playable character for weapons-based fighting game; Namco Bandai confirms January 31 launch.

Namco Bandai's SoulCalibur series focuses on crossed swords, but it also has a reputation for crossovers. Familiar faces like Link, Spawn, Kratos, Heihachi, Darth Vader, and Yoda have already sparred with series staples like Mitsurugi and Nightmare, and today the publisher revealed the featured guest fighter for the upcoming SoulCalibur V: Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Assassin's Creed series.

Ezio will enter the arena with his usual assortment of weapons, including a sword, a crossbow, and the series' iconic concealed wrist daggers. Namco Bandai also revealed that a more lighthearted knife-fighting character, Lord Geo Dampierre from the PSP game SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny, will be offered to players as a preorder incentive.

Beyond character updates, Namco Bandai also nailed down a release date for the game. SoulCalibur V hits the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in North America on January 31 and in Europe on February 3 of next year.

Producer Hisaharu Tago mentioned during the week of Tokyo Game Show 2011 that the company is collaborating with developer CyberConnect2 (Naruto Ultimate Ninja series) to create the game. In addition, the game music will feature contributions from composers Cris Velasco (God of War III) and Inon Zur (Dragon Age).

come on man!..i've got a game preordered already and your making it hard for me to choose now..no fair lol!

Prado0 5 pts

Ezio is too cool to be tampered with,,no added effects needed

TehMasterer2 5 pts

So it's Ezio with random glowing effects added to all his attacks? Ezio totally doesn't need that. Seems rather degrading for the AC franchise...

wesleyca 5 pts

has sephiroth or cloud been in any soul calibur games? cuz that would be cool

digi-demon 135 pts

Cool. Introduce any 'video-game' character (so long as its not Pikachu) Imo SC series became lame-ass when it felt it needed to introduce Star Wars licenced material into the series (ie.SCIV). Imo out of series licensing is totally unnecessary in SC.

So the Soul Caliibur/ Edge are Pieces of Eden?

More guest characters please!!!

Thug2Wasteland 21 pts

Hope to see a theme or a remix theme of one of his known themes..also a dedicated stage perhaps Rome...God, Ezio in the game makes the possiblites endless :). Nice pick..

Glade_Gnarr 5 pts

Ezio is awesome, but Dampierre being preorder sucks. This preorder bs has to stop, let's hope the retail market falls soon.

Time to undress the ladies in the character editor...

jomijohn 5 pts

WOW.......great to see EZIO in another setting!!!!!!!

Shadow_Fire41 5 pts

all we need now is a Soul Calibur whose guest character is Oghren from Dragon Age.

Phantomwedge 12 pts

@Realacide Grey Fox in Soul Calibur? The thought makes me drool...

Henninger 114 pts

Oh wow i didnt know that Soul Calibur 5 wuz gonna b coming out so soon. I thought i would come out in maybe as early as March. Aight well i guess i'll preorder this as soon as i can.

Realacide 5 pts

I love the guest character idea in Soul Caliber. An idea for a guest that I have had for a while would be the inclusion of Cyborg Raiden or Grey Fox from MGS. And I know I'm NOT the only one!!

RatchetV1 7 pts

Soul Calibur could use a MK crossover. I like the fact that Ezio is for 360 & PS3 but I want there to be a PS3 only & 360 only guy also. Maybe Cole MacGrath or something for PS3. I love how Soul Calibur shows it's personality by not taking itself too seriously & having fun with the characters & crossovers.

@rpgfandylan1990 soul calibur: boken destiny on psp. :)

blackace 116 pts

I'll definitely get it. I still have Soul Calibur IV will Yoda in the game. lol!! I get to play Maxi and Kilik once again.

RavageCobra 120 pts

I'm sure they would have added Kratos if Mortal Kombat didn't already do it. Jus' sayin'.

Poodger 91 pts

One of my favorite things about this series is the cool guest fighter additions.

rpgfandylan1990 5 pts

When the hell was Kratos in a Soul Calibur game?

K1DDO1979 5 pts

hurray! I can assassinate that loser character!

tubaballoonz 6 pts

I don't really care about the logic. I think he'll be a fun addition. :D

Ultimate39 6 pts

Well Kratos actually makes sense.

DARKNESSxEAGLE 19 pts

I know it's not a bad thing that we're gettng Ezio, but it just seems like an attempt (a good one) to cash in on AC fans. There aren't too many other modern characters known to most gamers that fit the role so well though.

taddia 5 pts

that's it. getting this. Not like AC at all, but ezio fits the role perfectly for this game! 8D

KH-mixerX 5 pts

That announcer also plays the voice of Xemnas from Kingdom Hearts 2. Am I the only one who noticed that?

This news is 4 days old, Gamespot.

comb5 103 pts

If send Namco a video of me crying do you think they'd make a PC version? lol.

kyram_3 5 pts

cool i'm a fan of assassin's creed but not a fan of soul cailber.

Strydarr 40 pts

Wasn't going to get this, but now I might.

parrot_of_adun 196 pts

@otanikun SC5 and AC2 take place under a century from one another... And its Soulcalibur. Easily one of the least plausible series I can think of.

heroesfan261 34 pts

They should make a PC version so we can use texmod to take the textures for ezio in this game and put them in ac2

Spectrobal 7 pts

Soul calibur 5 takes place in the 17th century

otanikun 30 pts

But how are you going to explain his being in the game? Considering he's from an old old time period; either way I'm both happy he's in the game and not happy. I was hoping that this SoulCalibur would just be that, SoulCalibur and not include guest characters that in all honesty have no reason being there since they don't fit in the main story whatsoever. But he's a good fit, seeing as his bevy of weapons will benefit the player.

AgentRebecca 5 pts

Im not at all intrested in SCV...

Yomigaeru 54 pts

"It would be nice to see a PC version. Oh, and hopefully there will be a Tales cameo. I'd love to see Yuri in a Soul Calibur game." It's too bad Namco Bandai has so little faith in the Tales series outside of Japan that we only get one of every four installments. Even though it's an in-house franchise... But I agree that Ezio makes more sense than the last round of "guests" we had...particularly Scheherazade and Angol Fear. Is Ezio gonna have a unique moveset, or just be a model swap of an existing character like those other guests were?

Fritzzland 5 pts

Ezio is going to follow his creed for a new assassination!
