Listen to the Final 1UP Podcast Ever

We got a whole bunch of people together to send off the site.

As you know, 1UP.com has breathed its last. Such are the vicissitudes of business. Happily, Jose Otero managed to pull together a startling number of former 1UP staff during Game Developers Conference this year for one final podcast. Not everyone was there due to the last-minute nature of this show (or because they had other duties that kept them away), but if you paid any attention at all to the site for the 10 years it lived you're bound to hear some voices you recognize in this three-hour tag-team adventure. Rather than spoil the surprise, though, we'd rather just let you hear the show for yourself.

Thanks for all the years of support. Your enthusiasm for our work fueled these shows, and we very literally couldn't have done it without you. Please enjoy this final gift to you all.

I think 1up's golden years were the very best years in gaming journalism! Thank you all so much for the many many hours of joy you gave to me! And good luck in all future endevours!

So much amazing content and analysis was produced by this group of people! I was a daily reader of 1up, an EGM subscriber and an avid listener of EVERY podcast you guys put out and of course the 1up show.

I have followed the careers of most of the staff since the big firing and after, many have gone on to do amazing things that still entertain me all the time.

Seanbaby makes me laugh so hard I cry with every article he posts.Sean Elliot was just involved in making what is now what I consider one of the best games of all time (Bioshock Infinite). Mark Macdonald is doing great work (and a great podcast) at 8-4 Play. I follow John Davison wherever he goes and watch the magic he peforms on everything he touches. Patrick Klepick is carrying the torch over at Giant Bomb (which is now the closest thing to 1up). Jeremy, Ray and Bob carry the Retronauts torch onwards. Garnet Lee carry's the 1up Yours torch over at Weekend Confirmed. Luke is working at Bungie. Shane is at Sony. Jeff Green is at PopCap. Dan Hsu is at Bitmob.

And that is just the ones I can think of off the top of my head!

So sad to see one of my fondest gaming memories! Good luck everyone! And please try and get together for some more podcasts some times?

Please tell me someone somewhere has an archive of the content that's been posted on here. We need it to remind future generations that game journalism is not just how many stars out of five.

All my best to you guys.

I subscribed just to say this:

I'm not a regular reader, but this really makes me sad. I've always turned to 1UP when I wanted a sober take on newly released games. I hope you all find jobs doing what you truly love and know how to do. Best of luck for all you guys!

  • Listening to this really moved me...

I can't express enough how much joy this site has given me.  YOU GUYS ALL FUCKING RAWK!!!  Lol I wish there was a cameo from Sharkey.  Hearing that guy get reminiscent would be priceless.

Seriously though, hearing your stories...rekindled my love for games.  I just graduated college and I'm currently at a job I hate; it pays the bills, but its like some bullshit marketing gig for my alma mater.

I listened to all 3hrs at my desk today and it was like magic.  All of the memories and experiences I've had with just chatting with users, learning about new games, patiently awaiting the next episode of the 1up Show, they all came back.  Lol Fridays after school was the best part of my day.

What all this is leading to is me starting a game reviews blog.  Right now all I know is that I love games and I wanna talk about them on a platform that I've built from the ground up, and I'm just gonna run with that.  It'll also be about craft beers, because craft beers are the bees knees.  Life is too short not to totally immerse yourself in the stuff you love, right?

Anyways, I just want to thank you for making a place where we could just talk.  1up was def. something special.  I love you guys and I wish you all the best.  I'll probably follow a buncha you guys on twitter

That was fantastic! I was surprised at how many people you guys could pull together! I was kinda hoping to hear some other alumni like Garnett, but I never thought you'd pool so many! Dan, Mark, Karen, Tina, crying Tina. Thanks for this big send off. you're the best Jose! I kept hearing about an annual reunion every GDC. I hope you guys do. Like Jeremy said, with the kick starter, you guys now have podcast equipment!

It was so great hearing all those familiar voices (and the 1up Show themes), old and new, here and together for the first time in years. I've been reading Ziff pubs and following 1up since junior high, and one of the most memorable things of these last two console generations for me has been the coverage you guys and gals provided for it, in so many delicious formats. It really changed the way I engaged with and thought about games.

Man Tina sure ripped poor Alice a new one for that accent though! And Matt, cool as he is, was a bit a of a wet blanket at times... But actual personalities getting expressed and rubbing up against eachother has been something I cherished about 1up's content, and no other place has done that blend of news and character quite the same.

Good luck to all of you, wish we could share a firm handshake and hold a slightly-longer-than-comfortable respectful gaze.

I didn't visit the site much after UGO bought them but this is still a bummer. After UGO happened I stop coming to this site. This was the best game site out there and was the only site worth visiting. It was this site that made me actually start caring about journalism and whos writing all these articles out there.

I used to love this site. It's not that I didn't like the content that was produced here but after all the layoffs I transitioned to IGN. Just wanted to say you all turned me on to gaming in a way i never knew before. Good luck to all current and past 1up-ers.

The 1-up show wasn't ahead of its time. It was excelent then and would be excelent now.

I can't believe it guys, huge flashback with even Mark McDonald making a bit of a guest appearance for this "1UP YOURS!" podcast. I have not logged into this account in over 6 years and I have to admit, it's amazing knowing just how much you guys shaped my early gaming ideology.

Sean Bettenhausen, John Davidson, Mark McDonald, Thierry Nguyen, many many many many others...THANK YOU! I still miss the podcasts :(

The show was fun to listen to. Thanks for getting together and doing this!

I'll always remember my many years of blogging here as meaningful time that shaped portions of my life. I had a blog in the '90s and early 2000s (before I even knew it was a thing), built out of the space I got for being an Earthlink customer. It was mostly books and movie talk. But I was rather unmotivated. It was discovering this site, and especially all of the personalities working here that put a fire in me. This was, possibly still is, the only site that had staff members dropping responses onto user blogs and interacting with us on a daily basis. That's the primary reason I really did feel like 1UP was a place worth calling home. Other web sites should pay attention.

Again, thanks for all the stuff! For as long as I have the memories, you'll all be a part of my life. Also, I'll continue haunting many of you on Twitter and so on.

It's very sad to see you go.  To be honest, I haven't been visiting the site for a while now.

Now I just feel like a part of my gaming history is going away.  I used to post all the time to my 1up blog.  Reading those took me back a ways.

Good luck to all of you.  May you all continue to give us honest editorials and reviews of our favorite hobby.
