In the Summer of 2001, LOJIC contracted with GRW Aerial Survey’s Inc. (GRWAS) and several subcontractors to recover selected existing survey control monuments, install numerous new monuments and survey the existing and newly installed monuments using GPS survey techniques. LOJIC contracted with Fowler Surveys, Inc. to monitor field activities and perform independent technical quality assurance during the project. In 2011, LOJIC contracted with Jacobi, Toombs and Lantz, Inc. (JTL) to verify and recover various monuments in the community's geodetic control network. This project included the restoration of two monuments and the recovery and verification of eighty-one existing monuments.

The LOJIC Geodetic Control Map has been updated to reflect this latest maintenance of the geodetic control network.

In 2010, LOJIC contracted with Jacobi, Toombs and Lantz, Inc. (JTL) to verify and further densify the community's geodetic control network. This project included the restoration of four monuments and the recovery and verification of fifty existing monuments.

Control monuments are generally installed in intervisible pairs consisting of a primary monument and an azimuth monument, each with an accurate coordinate position and elevation. Project databases consisting of a point shapefile with extensive attributes, control descriptions and digital photos of each monument and north, south, east, west lines-of-sight, all of which are accessible through this interactive GIS application.

In 2009, LOJIC contracted with Jacobi, Toombs and Lantz, Inc. (JTL) to verify and further densify the community's geodetic control network. This project included the reset of two monuments that had been destroyed, recovery and verification of five existing monuments, and the installation and measurement of eight new control monuments.

In 2008, LOJIC contracted with Jacobi, Toombs and Lantz, Inc. (JTL) to verify and further densify the community's geodetic control network. This project included the reset of seven monuments that had been destroyed and recovery and verification of three existing monuments.

In 2007, LOJIC contracted with JTL to perform verification and field recovery of all LOJIC geodetic control monuments set prior to 2005 or had not been recovered since 2005. No new monuments were set as part of this project. In all, this project involved the recovery of 179 of the total 266 control monuments in the community’s network. Control description sheets for the 179 control monuments have also been updated to reflect the recovered status.

While conducting the 2007 recovery effort, JTL survey crews used existing control description sheets to navigate to each monument. Some recovered monuments were determined to have monument control ties that were no longer applicable. Monuments that could not be recovered from existing control sheet descriptions were staked using RTK GPS methods. Most monuments were recovered in good condition, but new monument tie measurements were required and control description sheets were updated to reflect feature changes in the immediate vicinity.

In early 2006, LOJIC again contracted with JTL to verify and further densify the community’s geodetic control network. This project included the recovery and verification of twenty-seven existing monuments; and the installation and measurement of fourteen new control monuments.

In early 2004, LOJIC again contracted with JTL through Fuller, Mossbarger, Scott and May Engineers, Inc. (FMSM) to verify and further densify the community’s geodetic control network. This project included the reset of two monuments that had been destroyed; recovery and verification of forty-six existing monuments; and the installation and measurement of twelve new control monuments.

In early 2003, LOJIC contracted with JTL through FMSM for a project to verify and further densify the geodetic control network. This project included the reset of four monuments that were known to have been disturbed or destroyed; recovery and verification of forty monuments from the initial control project; and the installation and measurement of seventeen new control monuments.

Interactive Map Summary

To accomplish the goal of providing user-friendly public access to the geodetic control network databases, descriptions and photos, LOJIC developed this interactive map using LOJIC GIS data and ESRI’s ArcGIS Server software. It uses existing LOJIC digital orthophoto imagery as its base map along with street names and control monuments, which are displayed in the map view. Users can navigate and zoom into an area of interest by entering an address, street intersection,  property parcel number or a specific control monument. One or more control monuments may be selected in the map view either by dragging a box or specifying a selection radius and clicking a center point. Individual control monuments may then be selected from a pick-list. Control description sheets and reference photos for the selected monument can be displayed and printed by clicking on the appropriate thumbnail image. A simple site map may also be created from the map view and an on-line help tool is always accessible.

The Jefferson County Geodetic Control Network should be seen as a valued public resource, especially for the local professional land surveying and civil engineering community. We welcome user comments on the overall performance and usefulness of this interactive map and the condition of the control monuments as they are observed and used in the field.
