Xbox 720 requires Internet connection to load games?

Source says all games and apps will be suspended if system goes offline for more than three minutes.

No console has ever required an Internet connection to function, but that may change.

A new report claims Microsoft's still-unannounced next-generation platform will require an Internet connection to boot up. A source speaking to Kotaku explained that if the system goes offline for more than three minutes, any game or app that is running will be suspended.

"Unless something has changed recently, Durango consumer units must have an active internet connection to be used," the source said.

Microsoft's next-generation platform is reportedly going by the name Durango.

"If there isn't a connection, no games or apps can be started," the source added. "If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time--currently three minutes, if I remember correctly--the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started."

This new report tallies with another from February, when a tipster claimed that not only would the Xbox 720 require an Internet connection to function, but that an updated version of Xbox Live will be an "integral" component of Microsoft's new platform. A report from April 2012 claimed the Xbox 720's always-online requirement was an effort to combat piracy.

No mention was made concerning why Microsoft may be electing to mandate an Internet connection with its new platform. Past reports suggest the platform will block second-hand games, though this is not confirmed.

The Xbox 720 will also reportedly require a Kinect unit to function.

Microsoft is rumored to have its next-generation platform on store shelves this holiday season. Though the company has yet to reveal its official plans, Microsoft is rumored to announce the Xbox 720 in May.

Microsoft is going to destroy all they accomplished this console generation if they go this route.

It shell be amusing when uninformed people buy a 720 and can't figure out way they can't use it. the amount of confused costermers that will flood there call centers will be mind blowing.

No one, not video game journos nor fans, should listen to ANY rumours about the NextBox - especially after all the rumours we heard about the PS4 (including those that came from supposed testers) that turned out to be utterly false.

Just wait for Microsoft's unveiling event - until then people are just guessing.

Every time we as consumers get screwed over by a big company deciding they can essentially do whatever they want and people will buy their product, we lose consumer power. If this rumour turns out to be true, you can believe I will be making sure they don't see any of my money. As a community gamers need to start fighting back against these sanctions the companies are putting on their products. If they put AODRM on their product and you buy it, you're telling them that it's fine for them to have AODRM on.

Funny how people iz freaking out, even though none of this was confirmed, and I would like to think that Microsoft wouldn't be so stupid as to go to an essential internet connection all the time just to use their device, PS4 would take over in an instant and microsoft would lose a lot of money, considering that there are also people without an internet connection, at least not a permanent one, so no, I think this rumor deserves a seal of BULLSHIT.

lets just hope to god, that at e3. they change this whole, "always online idea" and that this doesn't come true.  because if this does, the sells for the xbox 720 and PS4 will look much like the sells for the Xbox and the PS2.

If true, the money paid on games in hindsight would practically be paying for a rental access service for a console that would never become a classic like an offline Dreamcast. God forbid but imagine how dlc could be forcefully sold to allow your games to load without the game shutting down? Hideous.

they can't see a problem with always on DRM?  That's what it is, no matter what they choose to dress it up as.

Metaphorically,  it's a form of tyranny in chaining up gamer's, depriving us of the physical sense of ownership of games we buy.

Wifi loses connection sometimes so if anyone owning next xbox dont want their game to be
interrupted must have to connect via ethernet cable...

It's pretty disgusting how they're actually taking the attitude of defending this & almost forcing it upon people. Like they're ignorantly praising it in the face of millions of people telling them it's a bad idea.

@VelvetKevorkian They are the same as EA with Sim City, they just don't give a damn about the consumer, they want total control over us, so they can empty our bank accounts quicker and more efficiently.the gaming industry is taking a pretty insidious turn for the worse but people just wear it and say nothing.

BraollusBeBack

@stev69 @VelvetKevorkian You do know that when a product is crap people don't like it, if people don't like it, people don't buy it = bad for business. Without the consumer they wouldn't have any business, or any money, so they do give a lot of damn about the consumer, especially the "heads" of the gaming industry. Also, I've never seen anyone buying something they don't want, especially in gaming industry, opposite in fact, they do petition and all sort of crap, like with hitman voice actor change, like with PC Dark Souls, most gaming industry consumers don't keep their head down and take it..

i would threaten to 'mod' my 720 to prevent this, but do I REALLY want to void my warranty with an MS product?

No thanks. PS4 all the more!

In a way it makes sense, xbox live always requires a internet connection, but this are just rumors, I don't think it would be a good idea in terms of business, I will wait for a official announcement, why do I keep coming to this type of articles??? Most of them are so unreal, PS4 proved that most of the rumors about it were not true, and I think it will be similar with xbox

How funny it is that their aim is to tackle piracy in order to win more money, yet they forget that this will result in a huge drop of customers, which will itself lead to the same problem they tried to get away from...Pathetic,

It's a neat idea, but I can't see it being implemented. Broadband speeds would have to be top level constant and then there's the rural areas that don't have or have limited coverage. Then the providers themselves would have to restructure plans to allow for the constant data usage. Just too much work

If it's going to happen it'll happen in 2 generations time in my opinion.

ecs33

@uklegendkiller You shouldn't need a high speed internet connection to authenticate a game. Only a small size of packets are being exchanged in this case.

That's cool. I'll just mod my console and say fuck you to your "always on" internet connection.

vhalan53
vhalan53

@keysnsamples no you wont, the game is installed by the disc which requires online authentication. then the system utilizes installed files from the disc. without authenticating your copy of the game, your disc is worthless.

 @vhalan53 @keysnsamples

You're an idiot. You seriously think the checks can't be bypassed? My modded Xbox right now can play games out of my region, games WITHOUT a disc that I download from the internet, and play DLC I don't own by unlocking them with XM360. This new Xbox will be no different. Sure I may not to play online with my modded Xbox, but that's a small price to pay so I can play games offline with no interference of this insane DRM.

I'm not saying day 1 the thing will be hacked, but in time it will. To say it's not possible is a joke. If you know anything about computers you would know that nothing is "hack proof" or safe from pirating. Look at Sim City's sad attempt to use DRM. People have already cracked it and can play offline just fine.

Hey Eddie Makuch, get on the phone to all whom you know at MS and tell them to check out this forum thread. Tell them to do it before they find themselves out of a job because the company isn't going to have the income for the Next-gen if they take the rumored route!

Thanks.

If this is indeed true, the sad part is that some of the console buyers will not be aware that this console requires internet connection (e.g. parents buying the console as gift to their children).

Ok, why the hell would I want this then? I play a lot of campaigns and other offline arcade titles and not just multiplayer. Why would I have to be online to play a campaign portion of the game? And I have never used a Kinect in my gaming. Why would I want to use that either? Microsoft isn't doing squat to quiet these rumors which makes them seem all the more true.

kingcrimson24

@fanboy999 agree , campaign is the most important part of the game and multiplayer is just for fun once in a while , but campaign is the most important for me

@fanboy999 Right on bud! And, why the hell should you have to have and pay for a subscription you may not want, need, or, gasp, not be able to afford on your student budget etc. Load of force fed crap that they can shove up their ass or I'll do it for them!

I hope this is only to gain attention of the people and not really something they are going to implement, otherwise they are limiting the amount of people who will buy this console. Not everyone has access to fast, unlimited internet.

And if this is an attempt to stop piracy. Piracy is only a matter of time.
