Cross-gen development means compromise, says Witcher dev

CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski says games like Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV, and Destiny have a dilemma to face.

Building cross-generational games means developers must compromise, CD Projekt Red CEO Marcin Iwinski told Edge. The developer explained that these compromises may negatively impact gamers.

"We've clearly said we'll be next-gen only," Iwinski said. "PC is a non-stop next-gen, that's the cool thing about it. So I think a lot of people with big franchises and massive reach plans, they'll have this dilemma, and I think there’ll be a lot of compromises made in the industry that might not necessarily be good for gamers."

Games like Bungie's Destiny and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch Dogs are all slated to release on current-gen machines and future platforms, but The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is not. Iwinski explained that CD Projekt Red would never feel comfortable downscaling the game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, a move that would result in a "so-so" offering.

"We're looking for AAA experiences from the next-gen," Iwinski added. "The Witcher 3 is so large… with a world bigger than Skyrim, and everything that we wanted to put inside it, there's just no way that it would run on current-gen. We'd have to put a couple of years of development into [360 and PS3 versions], and then the experience would be so-so… we'd never do that."

Ubisoft has not commented on the differences between the current-gen and next-gen versions of Watch Dogs or Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Bungie, on the other hand, has promised all versions of Destiny will feature the "full vision" of the game universe, though it is not clear exactly what that means.

Yeah it's not all about shaders .

It depends on how you look at it. If you have been developing a current-gen game a the end of the console cycle and you find an opportunity to also release on next-gen, why not take it?

Sure; the next-gen title will likely benefit mostly or only in the graphics department, but it gets your game out to a potentially larger audience.

If you're designing a next-gen game you don't want creativity to be held back by limitations of the previous generation consoles. You also don't want to come up with a fleshed out next-gen concept and then have to dissect it down until it will run on old consoles. Doing so will likely result in a much worse game on the old systems and will give your studio a bad rep.

@Hvac0120 The thing is, while released on a next gen system, it is not a next gen game. Yes it makes sense from a business perspective, you get more money. I imagine most of them have been aware of some of the specs for the next gen system for several months, perhaps by the time the game comes out they'd have had a year to make stuff that was tailored for next gen. But instead we get a copy paste affair with slightly better graphical effects, because they want more money over making a good next gen game. I mean it makes sense, but it's not going to excite me as it's definitely not a next gen game. Do you want to make great games? or would you rather cut corners to make more money? The answer is clear from most publishers. I do kinda like the dev that wants to make the best game possible though.

Where did Eddie get that there will two different version of Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed IV for each generation? I'm pretty sure it will be simply the same game on different consoles.

Do they consider wiiu to be next gen, current gen or somewhere in the middle?

Wii U is current gen, mostly because of it's technical specifications.

No surprise coming from CDPR.  As much as I can sympathize for gamers who would really want to play Witcher3 but can't otherwise afford/justify a new console, it gets to a point where one has to move forwards to avoid stagnation.  Some might argue we haven't reached that point yet, but I most certainly do.  Creativity > hardware sure, but better hardware allows for more creativity.  I'm getting tired of so-so.

Not having the Witcher 3 on 360 or ps3 might not pay dividends right away, but it will pay off in time, once other next-gen focused games come out and more people feel compelled to upgrade their consoles/computer.  A top quality game(s) that wows people builds buzz, and a loyal following which will only help CDPR grow.

Sacrificing quality to leech money from console sheep.

Sums up the last 5 years of gaming.

They can fool themselves all the want, but they did make sacrifices with Witcher 2. Red is not immune and doesn't always practice what they preach.

@Threesixtyci True, which is why I am glad they're committing to next-gen only.  Almost like a 'they've learned their lesson' type thing.  I know it's not as cut and dry as that, but it's a good sign anyways.

Just out of curiosity, why don't game developers do what they used to do where they make the superior version of the game on PC and a watered down version for console instead of making a watered down version for both PC and console? I've heard that Elizabeth in Bioshock Infinite had even more things she could do in the game, but they removed those features probably because the game had to run on the consoles.

CD Projekt Red is the future of PC gaming.

they understand piracy.. you dont fight it with silly drm instead put soul in the game and the ppl with brains will make the right decision in the end. and most important they RESPECT the pc players, total opposite of companies like EA.

looking forward to Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk.

eva02langley
eva02langley

@bruta Unfortunately, I disagree as much as I love them. They went from PC exclusive to porting PC game to console to porting console games to PC. Another developer did that and were categorize as a PC exclusive... you know who they are? Crytek...

And before them, Bioware.... if they see money somewhere, they are ready to sold their soul for a few bucks. Right now, CDPR is really close of closing the deal with the devil. Let's hope it doesn't happens.

Sardinar

@eva02langley You don't seem to understand how this works. It's not a matter of what a developer does - but under what and whose motivations.

CDPR is not close at all to making any deals with the devil.

@Sardinar @eva02langley Nor are they likely to ever be in a position where they have too, thanks to both their own high-profile, and the fact they also own GoG.com

What i am interested is input. Out of the genres i play, about 2 are the most important to me personally and they can be found on both consoles and PC:

1. Space/Air combat sim

2. Single Player First Person

I have to say, both genres have brought up PC only games that focus on Keyboard + Mouse/Joystick. The amount of input freedom has created some of the best games in these genres gameplay wise like STALKER or X3 Terran Conflict which serve as standards for their genres. I can also name Mount&Blade; Warband and the upcoming M&B2.;

All of these games can not work on consoles thanks to console controllers as they would have to be dumbed down and yet when you have proper standard games in existence then you don't want to create anything lesser than them.

So i have found myself playing on consoles less and less every year. I can't enjoy the limited input and the limited gameplay and mechanics of games on consoles anymore. If there happens innovation it usually sacrifices some other elements (or even automates which i dislike) to compensate for the limited inputs of the controllers.

This also has an effect of leaving me feel as though i've been playing the same games over and over again on consoles for a good while now, as if everything is copy pasted and nothing is capable of properly evolving anymore.

I don't give a damn about graphics, that's secondary in importance to gameplay, mechanics, depth and complexity to me personally.

Latert

@mikerfiker

I fully agree. STALKER, M&B; and ARMA 2 are among the best games I have ever played, and I enjoyed the complexity and freedom of X3 Terran Conflict as well. But I think besides the controlls, the modifiability of a game is just as important. Those games mentioned above all offered extensive modding capabilities, which have generated a lot of great mods. This is of course impossible on the consoles. Furthermore, I too feel like I'm playing the same game over and over, not only when playing on consoles, but also while playing ported games. Far Cry 3 for example felt so incredibly bland and left no impression on me at all.

I also don't care much for graphics. Graphics, even 'next gen', just don't impress me anymore.

Navardo95
Navardo95

@Latert @mikerfiker True though...although its quite a leap...it definitely doesn't have the same  "Wow" factor as that from PS1 to PS2 or even PS2 to PS3/

TheSkyrimStatue
TheSkyrimStatue

A world 20% bigger than Skyrim is not much to scoff at. Skyrim would be 3 years and a generation old when wild hunt ships and I think Just Cause is actually already bigger. Besides that I think cross gen games (except from gta 5 b/c they're giving themselves a few months to upgrade the game to next gen) are a waste of the new power so I'm glad cd projekt are yet again doing the right thing for the people buying the games

Other developers/publishers should abandon current-gem as soon as next-gen machines hit shelves. That way people will start buying next-gen machines. It's seven years now, people aren't hurt anymore of their current-gen purchase. We are ready for new hardware and GAMES.

Well said CDPR. If all games were made on the PC first (technically they are but u know what I mean) then downscaled to the current consoles on the market. Everyone would have much better performing games. Looking at the PS4/720 generation, the games industry will be even more held back than it was in the ps3/360 at launch.

@franzito @Vojtass I think he means they can do more for the same amount of money. CDPR is not funded by any publisher they are reusing their own savings and risk a lot more. Its risky to run independent studio.
