Grid

High-performance and high-throughput grid computing

Red Hat® Enterprise MRG Grid provides high-throughput (HTC) and high-performance computing (HPC). And it lets you move to a cloud-based grid computing model to achieve higher peak computing capacity and higher IT usage by using your existing infrastructure to build high-performance grids.

More

Advanced HPC and HTC capabilities

Based on the Condor project, Red Hat Enterprise MRG Grid provides the most advanced and scalable platform for HTC and HPC, with capabilities like:

  • Scalability to run the largest grids in the world.
  • Advanced features for handling priorities, workflows, concurrency limits, utilization, low-latency scheduling, and more.
  • Support for a wide variety of tasks, ranging from sub-second calculations to long-running, highly parallel (MPI) jobs.
  • The ability to schedule to all available computing resources, including local grids, remote grids, virtual machines (VMs), idle desktop workstations, and dynamically provisioned cloud infrastructures.

Cloud-based HPC utility computing model

With Red Hat Enterprise MRG Grid, you can also move your enterprise to a utility model of computing, where you can:

  • Schedule a variety of applications across a heterogeneous pool of available resources.
  • Automatically handle seasonal workloads with high efficiency, utilization, and flexibility.
  • Dynamically allocate, provision, or acquire more computing resources for additional applications and loads.
  • Execute across a diverse set of environments, ranging from VMs to bare-metal hardware to cloud-based infrastructures.

BENEFITS & FEATURES

High level of scalability and reliability

Scalable grid scheduler

The MRG Grid scheduler is based on Condor, which powers many of the largest grids in the world and easily scales beyond tens of thousands of nodes.

Federated grids/clusters

A mechanism known as flocking lets independent pools use each others' resources, controllable by customizable policies.

Multiple standards-based APIs

A web service interface provides job submission and management functionality. A command-line interface (CLI) provides a highly scriptable—with consistent output—interface to all functionality.

Comprehensive scheduling

Scheduling functions include:

  • High-throughput scheduling: Millions of batch jobs can be run through MRG Grid.
  • Low-latency scheduling: Red Hat Enterprise MRG's integration of Messaging and Grid technology lets you schedule jobs and get results from MRG Grid deployments in the millisecond range.
  • Desktop cycle harvesting: Desktop cycle harvesting lets you leverage the unused capacity of desktops to add processing power to your grid.
  • Flexible scheduling policies: ClassAds provides a flexible language for policy and metadata descriptions.
  • Workflow management: The ability to specify job dependencies, via DAGMan, allows the construction and execution of complex workflows.

Centralized configuration and administration

Features include:

  • Flexible administration policies
  • Job-level control rules
  • License management to ensure optimal usage of application licenses
  • Easy configuration
  • Ability to enforce new configuration changes without having to take the grid down
  • Quick installs through multiple well-maintained and individually patchable RPMs
  • Ability to deploy every component in an HA fashion
  • Real-time monitoring and historical reporting
  • Alerts from every component
  • Historical reports to understand usage, perform audits, and conduct capacity planning

HPC environment elasticity with utility cloud

Virtualization

MRG Grid lets you submit a virtual machine (VM) as a user job, and supports migration of the VM.

Cloud scheduling

With MRG Grid, you can use computing resources at cloud-based environments like Amazon EC2.
