Gluster Workshop

oVirt Workshop

The oVirt Project is an open virtualization project for anyone who cares about Linux-based KVM virtualization. Providing a feature-rich server virtualization management system with advanced capabilities for hosts and guests, including high availability, live migration, storage management, system scheduler, and more. By open we mean open source & open governance, done right. During this workshop you’ll learn about the technical background and direction of the oVirt project. You’ll meet the developers, and have an opportunity to see and dive into the code right away. The workshop is open to all who want to use, get involved with, or learn about the comprehensive open virtualization management platform, oVirt. The sessions cover the technical projects details, governance, getting involved, usage, and much more. If you have any interest in an Open Virtualization Management platform, this workshop is for you!

Opscode Chef Workshop
Tuesday, August 28

The Opscode Chef Workshop is a hands on training class for getting familiar with Chef for performing common automation tasks. In this workshop, we will cover:

  • Set up a local workstation with Chef and connect to a Chef Server.
  • Use Chef to automate installation of a Nagios server as a real world example.
  • Automate other common system tasks with Chef, including:
  • User management and sudo permissions
    • NTP, including a local NTP server
    • SMTP relaying with postfix

Each exercise will be instructor-led, and introduce new Chef concepts along the way. We'll cover the Anatomy of a Chef Run, Chef's Authentication Cycle, how to build roles, manipulate configuration through data in attributes, use Chef's search API for dynamic configuration, and more.

General Requirements

  • Students must be familiar with basic to intermediate Unix/Linux system administration topics including the following:
  • Command-line familiarity with Unix/Linux shells
  • System resource concepts like package, service and user management
  • Key-based authentication (e.g., RSA/SSH)
  • Version control systems (e.g., Git, Mercurial, Subversion)
  • Knowledge of cloud computing or virtualization concepts such as API-driven compute is helpful

 Students should have basic working knowledge with at least one third generation programming language such as Perl, Python, PHP or Ruby.

  • Basic data structures (string, numbers, array, hash or language equivalents)
  • Conditionals (if/unless, case/switch)
  • Loops (for/foreach, while, or language equivalents)

Workstation Requirements
Attendees should bring a wifi-enabled laptop to the workshop. Install non-Chef software before the workshop starts.

  • SSH/SCP (OpenSSH, puTTY/WinSCP or equivalent)
  • Programer's text editor (Vi/Vim, Emacs, TextMate or equivalent)

The following operating systems have been tested as workstation systems with the hands on exercises:

  • Ubuntu 10.04, 12.04
  • Fedora 16
  • Mac OS X 10.7.3
  • Windows 7

SPDX Introduction and Working Group Meeting
Tuesday, August 28

The Software Package Data Exchange® (SPDX™) specification is a standard format for communicating the components, licenses and copyrights associated with a software package.  SPDX helps facilitate adoption and compliance with free and open source software licenses by standardizing the way license information is shared across the software supply chain.

SPDX will hold a working group meeting from 1-6pm Tuesday, August 28. The timeslot from 1-2pm is reserved for meet and greet and a brief introduction to the SPDX standard followed by a working session for the technical, business, and legal team members from 2-6pm. Participation in the working session is open to all and new members are welcome!

Linux Plumbers Conference

The Linux Plumbers Conference is a forum for communication and problem-solving for system-wide issues that cross project boundaries. This community event includes both invited guests as well as open registration, gathering 300 stakeholders, decision makers and developers.

The Linux Security Summit (LSS) is a technical forum for collaboration between Linux developers, researchers, and end users. Its primary aim is to foster community efforts in analyzing and solving Linux security challenges.
