Just five years after graduating from Libertyville High School, Dena Goldberg is now conducting ground-breaking cancer research in a lab at the University of California in San Francisco. Goldberg, whose parents Susan and Jay Goldberg still live in Libertyville, plans to go to graduate school in the fall and someday hopes to host a TV show that teaches the public about genetics and ethical issues in modern medicine. OAK PARK — Starting with the Class of 2015, Oak Park and River Forest High School no longer will provide individual class rankings for students, removing one element of competition for college admissions. “What will come to matter more is the student’s GPA and the student’s GPA in the core areas,” said Philip Prale, the school’s assistant superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. “When you remove a piece of data from the pool, the other data becomes more important.” Grade point average will continue to be used for student honors, such as Scholarship Cup winners, OPRF’s version of valedictorians, Prale said. …

NORTHBROOK – After serving the community for three decades, Northbrook Citizens For Drug & Alcohol Awareness no longer will provide parenting and youth alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention programs. “When we began in October 1983, volunteers were in abundance, willing to take on organizational leadership roles,” said Marcia Doniger, president of the organization. “However, during the last several years we have experienced a great decrease in volunteers who were able to commit to those organizational roles needed to sustain NCDAA.” Doniger also noted that even though the programs will end, parent education still needs to be a priority in …
