Both the men’s and women’s tournaments begin with a round-robin – the 12 men’s teams divided into two groups of six teams, the 10 women’s teams divided into two groups of five. 

The teams in each group play each other once. The top four teams in each group qualify for the quarter-finals, from which point the tournaments are played in a knockout format.

At the end of the knockout stage the winners of the semi-final matches compete in the gold-medal game, and the remaining two teams compete in the bronze-medal game.
