Road to a Cosmopolitan Database System: The History of Internationalization of PostgreSQL
Date: 2:45pm, Monday, September 27th When PostgreSQL was born in 1996, it did not have the capability to handle foreign languages. This was a serious problem in Japan. We started to fix it and completed basic work of I18N(Internationalization) part in 2002. To overcome the problem, there were several challenges to implement I18N functionality of PostgreSQL. In the first place, it must be very effective and should not affect the performance of database engine. In the second place, it must be ""culturally"" neutral to any languages. In the third place, it must be ""technically"" neutral to any charsets and/or encodings. Lastly, it must be extensible so that new charsets/encodings can be added later on. In this talk we present the architecture of I18N part of PostgreSQL and the development history. Audiences of this talk are expected to have the basic knowledge what I18N is. However knowledge of database systems are not required.

Tatsuo Ishii, SRA OSS, Inc. JapanTatsuo Ishii has been working for SRA for 25 years now and has kept on contributing to PostgreSQL and related projects over 10 years. He is now focusing on enhancing systems using PostgreSQL by creating a clustering software called "pgpool-II". His another interest is creating OSS community and encouraging people to use OSS. He is the co founder of Japan PostgreSQL users group. He actively gives talks several times a year regarding PostgreSQL, mostly in Japan and once in Canada. » Website |
