How Flash Storage WorksDavid Woodhouse, Intel CorporationAlthough flash memory has been used for storage in embedded Linux systems for many years, it has recently become more interesting to the mainstream Linux user base. This presentation will explain the basic operation and limitations of flash technology, and therefore the requirements that any type of file system based on flash must meet. It will describe the two common types of storage based on flash -- the "translation layer" which is used to emulate a traditional hard drive either in software or internally to an SSD device, and the native file system which operates directly on the underlying flash. The internal operation of both will be explained, and the relative merits of the two approaches will be compared. |
