Kathy, although current cell phones and PDAs leave a lot to be desired when it comes to accessing the Internet, they are indeed being used for this purpose. And, I predict, future cell phones and PDAs will become even more Internet-friendly.

In short, we who design the Web can`t just be designing for what is, we need to be prepared for what`s coming.

Seems to me a lot depends on the age group... the youngsters among us whose vision is clear like to use cellphones and other small device screens for getting on the web (helps them get past mom and dad`s surveillance a lot of times... no wonder). But for those with aging eyes these small screens are difficult at best, and the population in the USA is definitely aging. Since it many times also costs an additional fee for the web connection, this tends to put a small damper on use of the small devices--does for me. But larger businesses demand constant connectivity, so Blackberries have proliferated, at least for email usage, and cell phones are used constantly by teens for text messaging (and probably for cheating on exams as well, never mind all the other things they can do with them). Another thing to think about is video... youtube.com is immensely popular, but the movies don`t translate as well to such a small screen, if they are viewable at all. Ecommerce sites can be rough this way, too, as one wants to see more closely what one is buying and the small devices lack in this area--that tiny screen can only show so much.

Personally, I don`t see desktops/laptops as being obsolete any time soon as a type of Web connection device, but I also feel that the smaller devices need to be considered and kept in mind as the Web continues to grow. This is where simpler sites with fewer graphics and more real content will shine (basically, well-designed sites with something to offer) as these devices develop their technology and continue to be such a strong part of our culture.

An additional note on cellphones.. in other countries--a friend of mine who moved back to Italy tells me this--they are so accepted that they`ve pretty much become the national pastime. No one is ever seen without their cellphone, and they are almost always talking on it. With that kind of acceptance, and the relatively low cost of them compared to computers (often free as an incentive to sign up for a contract) one cannot discount their importance on the web.

Keep in mind that in foreign countries, it isn`t always possible to string cable. It`s why cellphones have tended to have a near universal acceptance in Europe and China, and many under-developed countries.

That being said, kids like the text messaging and email, corporations use email and quick attachments, but there`s a very large market segment who need and want a larger screen.

I`m not disagreeing that standardization will help for coding and uniformity. I`m only saying the reason for that standardization isn`t handhelds, PDAs, and cellphones. Look at the "pet peeves" thread, with all the so-called advances that have become total turn-offs for so many folks. Then again, we`re not young kids using MySpace.

I`ve only been on SuN a short while, but I keep seeing the same comments regarind Web site redesign: Make it simpler, have actual things to do, keep the flashy stuff to a minimum, make it easy to read.

That`s the operative word: Read! Until we get to a fully-developed voice and facial recognition interface, reading is the bottom line. If you can`t read it easily, chances are you won`t stay on the site.

"I would suggest moving away from tables-based design. Reason: It adds way too much code to a page, and it`s code that isn`t necessary."

There are several good things to be said about CSS, especially regarding quickly changing the look of a website. But I can change the look of my website by changing the code with a global search and replace, using our standard naming conventions.

Still, may be better to use CSS for this reason in some cases. We use it to an extent. We design and create websites, and if we are 100% sure that we will be maintaining the site and applying changes going forward, then we will use CSS. But if the customer may be taking over at any time in the future, we use tables for the most part.

Why? Well, it has to do with customer satisfaction. What if, down the road, our customer takes over their site maintenance and has no staff who understands the nuances of CSS? What if they find they need to spend thousands to either train existing staff, or hire someone? If I were them, I would definitely not be happy. We want our customers to have an excellent customer experience when dealing with us. Forcing them into using CSS is not something we choose to do. To us, it would be like forcing you to use premium gasoline rather than regular, informing you of this after the sale of your vehicle. You`d be forced to pay more. Not good business.

And to state that tables add way too much unnecessary code is questionable. With that logic, a good case can be made that all use of XML adds waaaay too much code and transmission traffic to the web. It is much better to use flat files, in industry standardized formats, as already exists and has for years and is known as EDI. File size is tremendously larger when using XML. Perhaps Sprint, AT&T, and other carriers are the main champions of XML? XML use certainly increases data traffic, which increases their revenues! The introduction of XML was very much along the lines of "the king`s new clothes," with all the "oohing and ahhing" about a new mechanism for sharing data. Just because it is "new" doesn`t mean it isn`t a step backwards in many respects.

Enjoy seeing the web and computer languages and methodologies evolve, or rather, revolve, for over 20 years! Revolve = rename and repackage the same old features and processes, and claim that the old is actually new!

There`s another reason that tables are highly useful, and that`s the difference in how FireFox and IE interpret CSS. Not to mention that a table provides absolute margins, which are really very helpful in setting up "tabs."

Web editors are about 20 years behind the times in terms of word processing, so many of the tricks I learned back on IBM`s "DisplayWrite" come in handy these days. Just goes t`show ya that if you wait long enough, everything old becomes new again. :-)
