Young Leaders Programme

Young Leaders Programme
The Young Leaders programme is designed to give a group of disadvantaged young people the chance to make positive change to their lives.

In bidding for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, London 2012 made a commitment to deliver a project to support 100 young people on an intensive personal development programme. The aim was for these young people to develop key skills and play a significant role in the delivery of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Young Leaders programme, supported by BP, is designed to give a group of disadvantaged young people the chance to make positive change to their lives.

What have the Young Leaders been doing?

The Young Leaders have been delivering community team projects and individual challenges that have been inspired by the Games and the Olympic and Paralympic Values.

Through their growing volunteering experience they have developed a range of skills including leadership and teamwork. And by recruiting additional volunteers and engaging members of their communities in their activities, they have expanded the reach of the programme.

Training

The selected Young Leaders have been involved in a training programme designed to improve their inter-personal, communication and leadership skills. Training is being delivered at local, regional and national levels through workshops, mentoring programmes and events.

Coaching support

BP employees have been providing individual leadership coaching to the Young Leaders. The delivery agencies on the ground are the National Young Volunteers Service and the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust.

What did they do at Games time?

The young people were able to put their new skills into practice by taking up high-profile volunteering roles at Games time. All of the Young Leaders who interviewed for a role as a Games Maker were successful, and they will be among the youngest Games Makers helping to deliver the London 2012 Games.
