Our resident Hobby Gaming expert knows the ins-and-outs of every game out there, while I don't really know my Magics from my Gatherings. See, I don't even know that's one game, that's how out of it I am. So when a card game manages to seep through into my consciousness, you know that it's moved far past "early adopter" stage. FanExpo Canada: Take A Look At The Awesome Props From Tim Burton's 'Frankenweenie'!

Though FanExpo Canada is relatively light on the entertainment aspect that characterizes San Diego Comic-Con, or New York Comic-Con - other than the massive focus on celebrity signings and photo ops - there was one big splash from an upcoming movie this year: Tim Burton's Frankenweenie. The Director's return to stop motion animation took up a large chunk of real estate on the Con floor with a huge showcase of characters, props, and the process of making the feature length film.

Fan Expo Canada: DC Comics Cosplay

FanExpo Canada: Kids Comics Go North!

Sunday was the last day of FanExpo Canada, which meant one thing: Kids Day! Or at least, ever so slightly more kids content than usual, including a panel with some experts on making comics for a younger audience. On the panel were Faith Erin Hicks (Bigfoot Boy), Willow Dawson (Hyena in Petticoats), Scott Chantler (Three Thieves), and Jack Briglio (Growing Up Enchanted), moderated by Jennifer Haines, owner of the Eisner winning comic book store The Dragon.

“It sometimes feels like a niche market, but it shouldn’t be,” said Haines before introducing the panel. Things then kicked off talking about writing your own material, versus licensed material - which is obviously a large part of kids comics. “With Scooby Doo, I remembered the ‘60s ones, and I wanted to be faithful to that,” said Briglio, adding that beyond that, it has to go through multiple levels of the Editorial process. FanExpo Canada: DC Comics Sunday Panel Announces JLA, Teases The Return Of Stephanie Brown

The last day of FanExpo Canada also brought the last DC Comics panel of the Con. Wipe away your tears, though, because there was some big news items awaiting the crowd of excited attendees. On the panel moderated by DC's John Cunningham were Dan Didio, Greg Capullo, Jason Fabok, and David Finch.

First, Cunningham talked to Capullo about bringing the Joker to Batman. “We’re going to scare and frighten the s**t out of you all,” said Capullo. “This is going to be Joker meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Joker had his face on ice, and he’s robbed and stolen the face back. I think it would be cool to have this stuff rotting away, so there’s flies buzzing around him. You guys think that’s cool? I hope all your pants will get tight, and your nipples will stiffen, and you’ll enjoy it.” Read More...

One of the last panels Saturday at FanExpo Canada was “On The Couch with Ty Templeton,” a free-form discussion about comics, with a focus on indie versus corporate work. On the panel were Darwyn Cooke, Jimmy Palmiotti, Dan Slott, Ramon Perez, and Lar deSouza.

The panel kicked off talking about the topic of the day, with deSouza saying that because his comic is a web presence first, they write more for themselves - and have a better relationship with their fans. FanExpo Canada: Alan Tudyk On FIREFLY, And... 'A KNIGHT'S TALE 2?'

You probably know Tudyk best from his work on Joss Whedon shows like Firefly, and Dollhouse, and okay, probably Firefly. But the talented actor has a lot of roles under his belt, and a crowd ready to hang on his every word here at FanExpo Canada. “This is like Comic-Con, but better,” said Tudyk entering to huge applause from the audience.

He then hit some “popular” questions he’s been asked at signings this weekend:

- “I’m a pisces.”

- “I’m currently single.”

- “What am I doing lately? I’m at a Con in Toronto.”

FanExpo Canada: DC's All-Access Saturday Panel Goes Before Watchmen

DC Comics kicked off their Saturday programming at FanExpo Canada with a packed panel featuring some of their top talent - and a few big announcements. Panelists included: Dan Didio, Amanda Conner, Brian Azzarello, Darwyn Cooke, and moderator John Cunningham.

First, two announcements:

- Bill Sienkiewicz will take over pencilled for the late Joe Kubert, working with Andy Kubert on inks. Sienkiewicz was Andy’s first choice.

- The publisher announced a new mini-series, “Before Watchmen: Moloch” which we have more news about here.

FanExpo Canada: The Marvel NOW! Panel Shows Off The New, Shiny Comics

On the biggest day of FanExpo Canada, Marvel held their biggest panel, talking about all things Marvel NOW! On the panel were Steve Wacker, Nick Lowe, C.B. Cebulski, Axel Alonso, and Tony Moore, moderated by Arune Singh.

Starting off, Singh noted that they’re not giving anyone, “new collars,” and Alonso added that the idea harkens back when he was a kid, and comics all had “different flavors.” Back to Singh, he plugged one of the developments was the addition of Marvel AR to titles, as well as digital downloads with every copy.

First up was Uncanny Avengers:

“The fact that we lured John Cassady out of semi-retirement says a lot about our confidence in this series,” said Alonso. Lowe added that this book is in the continuity as previous Marvel books. “It’s the same story, not a reboot.” Read More...
