Writer Brian Wood keeps busy. The "Demo" creator has "The Massive" and "Mara" scratching his creator-owned itch at Dark Horse and Image respectively, while he's dipping his toe into superhero comics with a stint on "Uncanny X-Men" (something it seems like he's still trying to wrap his mind around), plus he's got a "Conan the Barbarian" miniseries with his "Demo" collaborator Becky Cloonan and bringing the original trilogy "Star Wars" to life in a new series.
I got a couple of minutes with Wood during Emerald City Comic-Con to talk about why he's not bothered by the expanded universe, the love of Conan's life, and sex, athletics, and superheroes.

The creator of "30 Days of Night" and "Criminal Macabre" was wary about trying to make a monster story out of the golem. The many different stories about golems (there doesn't seem to be one key golem myth) are often about giving life to a lump of clay and seeing what happens, strange tales tied up in faith, alchemic science, and mysticism. "I've done my take on the Frankenstein myth, on Dracula, vampire, and werewolves, and the golem is always one that seemed really hard to tackle," Niles recently told me by phone "Because it was always so firmly entrenched in Jewish mysticism, it seemed like a hard thing to tell a straight monster from."
But even after getting several short stories about the creature out of his system, Niles couldn't quite exorcise the golem from his mind, ultimately teaming up with artist Dave Wachter ("The Hell-Bound Train") to bring to life his WWII-set miniseries about Jews enlisting the aid of the creature to protect them from the Nazis.

'Legend Of Korra' Art Book On The Way From Dark Horse In July

[Update: in the original post, we mistakenly identified the release date of the first season of "The Legend of Korra" as set for May. This has not been confirmed by Nickelodeon, but we'll have an update for you when there is a concrete release date.]
The hardcover "The Legend of Korra: The Art of the Animated Series—Book One: Air" will out July 24 from Dark Horse, featuring commentary from the show's creators.
Interview: Rather 'R.I.P.D.' With Writer Peter M. Lenkov

"The obstacles," writer and producer Peter Lenkov chuckles when I ask him about the challenges of getting his comic "R.I.P.D." to the big screen. "Being in development hell for ten years."
Lenkov, who has a list of credits going back 20 years has worked steadily in film and TV (he's the mind behind "Demolition Man," and don't think I didn't ask him about that), but "R.I.P.D." was for the longest time that elusive project, tied up in the not uncommon snarl of delays, budgetary concerns, and false starts since Universal first set eyes on the concept.

Book Review: 'Jam,' Or A Sticky Apocalypse In Brisbane

Author Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw's comic-apocalyptic novel "Jam" pokes fun at military-industrial incompetence, an over-saturation of hipster irony, and the corporate hive mind--all pretty soft targets for the usually sharp and funny writer. Unfortunately, given its broadsides against such dull unworthies, a lead character who's a quivering moral vacuum (although that's not a bad thing in and of itself), and a weirdly languorous structure, this story of the carnivorous strawberry jam that ate Brisbane never really does justice to the absurdity of that pitch.

"The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys" from the My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way, his co-writer Shaun Simon and artist Becky Cloonan was first announced in 2009 to coincide with the release of the band's futuristic, sci-fi concept album "Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys." It goes without saying at this point that Guillermo del Toro is a busy guy. Between directing the upcoming "Pacific Rim," producing "Rise of the Guardians," discussing a possible "Justice League Dark"-type movie (see his final answer!) and much more, he found time to oversee the adaption of he and Chuck Hogan's trilogy of vampire novels "The Strain" into a comic series for Dark Horse which has been collected in a trade to be released on Wednesday, November 14. "The Strain" is written by David Lapham with art by Mike Huddleston, colors by Dan Jackson and inks by E.M.
