As rumored for the past month by a listing on GameStop’s web page, Monster Game’s 3DS remake of the 2010 Wii platformer, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will hit store shelves on May 24th in Europe and North America. Nintendo confirmed this news via their twitter.

Now if only we could get release dates for Wii Fit U, Pikmin 3, Mario Golf, and Mario & Luigi.

NPD sales data for February 2013: Xbox 360 takes #1 and Wii U rebounds

NPD

The NPD data for February 2013 is out and we’re piecing together who did well and who did badly.

Good news for Nintendo as Wii U sales increased from 57k in January to 65k-80k.

Early estimates for Sony’s struggling PS Vita put it between 35-40k. The Xbox 360 once again took the top spot with 302k consoles sold. Somehow Microsoft keeps selling those 360s after all these years, marking their 26th straight month atop the NPD.

It will be interesting to see how the 360 sells once the next-gen Xbox is revealed. Will it take a nose dive or stay steady?

Software wise Dead Space 3, Sly Cooper, Madden and Call of Duty all grabbed spots in the top 10. Sadly the top 10 software list from NPD counts all SKUs of one game so we’ll never know if Fire Emblem: Awakening’s nationwide sell outs would outsell some of the heavy hitters in February. We know that Fire Emblem did sell over 180k copies during February. Considering the last FE game on DS sold 250k lifetime this isn’t bad at all. Add into that supply shortages and I’m sure Awakening will be very successful here in America.

We’ll update with 3DS, Wii, PS3 numbers when they become available.

Pikachu 3DS XL system only $159 at Target and regular 3DS $129 week of 3/24-3/30

pika3ds2

It has been pointed out to us that the brand new yellow Pikachu 3DS XL that was only recently announced for North America will be $40 off at launch at Target stores.

targetad324

That’s right, on March 24th when this very yellow handheld hits shelves you can buy it for $159.99 instead of $199. Quantities will be limited but I recommend you attempt to price match this at Best Buy if there is one near you. That way you can avoid the rush to Target to get it since I expect collector’s to come out in full force to grab this one.

Not only that but Target will be selling the Blue, Red, Pink 3DS XL units for $159 as well. Want a regular 3DS? Then you’ll be able to get it for $129 at Target starting March 24th and presumably lasting through March 30th.

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon Preview: Searching for a Circle Pad Pro

Luigis-Mansion-Dark-Moon-14

This past weekend at the SXSW Gaming Expo I got a chance to go hands-on with the upcoming 3DS game Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. The game arrives in stores in just a few weeks but since Nintendo isn’t likely to release a demo of this marquee 3DS title it was one of the few chances the public may get to try the game without purchasing it.

It looks just like you would imagine. Luigi equipped with the Poltergust, sucking up ghosts after you reveal where their hidden. The portion of the game I played tasked Luigi with retrieving four stolen keys to open a door and of course the thieves responsible for stealing these keys were ghosts. Each ghoul goes a different direction leading you to various environmental puzzles.

Pressing B makes Luigi run faster (as he walks very slow normally) and pressing A flashes a light to spook ghosts out of hiding. Holding A down will create a larger burst of light. Once your light stuns a ghost you can hold down either shoulder button (L or R) to suck the ghost into your Poltergust.

During my time playing the game I was only able to retrieve two of these stolen keys. There are numerous hidden pathways in each room that are fairly obvious since the game prompts you to press the X button to check to see if a particular item is suspicious. One bathroom in this mansion had a toilet that would lead me to a hidden room once Luigi sat down on the toilet. There are countless ghosts surrounding Luigi, trying to scare the crap out of him yet he can’t even sit down on a toilet without being thrown into another environmental puzzle. Poor guy.

Overall the game was charming, had nice subtle music and followed the established Luigi’s Mansion formula well. The only issue I had with the game, and I’m sure I won’t be the only one, is the lack of Circle Pad Pro support.

Since the 3DS only has one circle pad built into it Luigi must move his vacuum by tilting the entire 3DS device. Luigi’s vacuum will only pull into it what is directly in front of it unless you tilt the device in whatever direction you need. This is similar to the camera control or first person arrow shooting in Ocarina of Time 3D.

The problem with this is it causes the game to constantly break the 3D effect, giving your eyes unnecessary strain. A simple solution would be to have the game support the Circle Pad Pro, an accessory that Nintendo wanted all of us to think we needed when they released it one year ago. But now a full year has gone by and the list of games that support the accessory is tiny and games like Luigi’s Mansion that would benefit from its inclusion don’t support it.

Nintendo, Y U NO USE CIRCLE PAD PRO?

Nintendo, Y U NO USE CIRCLE PAD PRO?

This motion control isn’t too annoying, steering the 3DS towards Luigi’s enemies isn’t hard and is usually enjoyable. You can move the vacuum to some extent with the face buttons on the 3DS but for some people that won’t be good enough. But the obvious decision would have been to include Circle Pad Pro support for those of us that enjoy a consistent 3D effect.

It is a disappointing decision by Nintendo and Next Level Games. If there is any one drawback that I can see being mentioned again and again with Luigi’s Mansion it is the lack of Circle Pad Pro support. The game so desperately needs a second analog stick and without it most users will likely choose to play with the 3D effect off altogether.

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon will be available in stores and the eShop on March 24th. Despite some control issues the game appears to be a charming and comical follow-up to the GameCube classic. I’d like to think Nintendo will patch in Circle Pad Pro support in the future but I’m not going to hold my breath for that.

Nintendo loses lawsuit, ordered to pay $30 million over 3D technology

3dspurple

You may have heard that Nintendo was embroiled in a lawsuit against Seijiro Tomita over the 3D tech in the 3DS’s top screen. Well it turns out Nintendo lost that case for whatever reason and now has to pay $30 million to Tomita.

Nintendo’s official statement is this:

A jury awarded $30.2 million in damages to Tomita Technologies in a patent infringement lawsuit brought by Tomita against Nintendo. The Tomita patent did not relate to the 3D games playable on the Nintendo 3DS. The trial was held in U.S. District Court in New York before Judge Jed Rakoff.

Nintendo is confident that the result will be set aside. The jury’s verdict will not impact Nintendo’s continued sales in the United States of its highly acclaimed line of video game hardware, software and accessories, including the Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo has a long history of developing innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others.

We see so many of these lawsuits and many of them never go anywhere. I’m surprised this panned out this way for Nintendo. I’m sure they didn’t “steal” this man’s 3D technology but I’m also sure Nintendo’s 3D tech had too many similarities to his to make it stand out as not owing the man any credit/money.

All in all $30 million is pocket change to Nintendo.

Pikachu 3DS XL coming to North America 3/24

481168_10151527020744905_362930412_n

That Yellow Pikachu 3DS XL unit that was confirmed for nearly every region except North America just may be making the trip to the USA after all.

One retail employee has confirmed that his store has these systems in stock. The street date for these to go on sale is March 24th, the same day as the first 3DS Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game.

Its odd that Nintendo would opt to not have any special colored system for Luigi’s Mansion considering Pikachu and Fire Emblem both got special edition consoles recently.

If you were waiting for this yellow 3DS XL to make it our shores you’re in luck and will likely be able to pick one up for roughly $200 in just a few weeks.

The Pokemon Company confirmed the news this morning.
