Reggie on whether the Wii U has been rushed to market to counter lagging Wii sales and other topics

Reggie Fils-Aime fielded the question of whether the Wii U is being put out on the market too early this year in order to counter slowing sales of the Wii console.

He said:

“The short answer is no. This is not a system that has been rushed in any way.

“And, in fact, our challenging financial performance has not been due to the Wii’s performance. It was driven by our performance on Nintendo 3DS.

“In Canada and the U.S. the sell-through rate of Nintendo 3DS after 14 months is better than it was at the same point in time for the DS. However, because of the lack of strong software from Nintendo, the lack of online capabilities, and the lack of other entertainment at launch, it caused us to [reduce the handheld console’s price], which generated a significant negative situation for us.

“Now that our 3DS business is healthy and on a positive path, that product is going to be the predominant volume and profit driver for our business this year. The impact that the Wii U will have will be somewhat modest because we’re launching it during the holiday season.”

I would think if they had intended to rush out the Wii U it would have released last year.

Aisha Tyler calls out gamer reaction to her at Ubisoft’s E3 press conference

I wrote about this a few days ago and this is another instance of the Internet Gaming Community displaying sexism and the inability to share their favorite past time with those outside of message boards.

Aisha Tyler, known for playing Lana on the seriously funny TV show Archer, has fired back at gamers on the internet who complained about her hosting Ubisoft’s E3 press conference last week.

For the record I thought Aisha did a great job during the presentation and I’d love to see her do it again. The reaction to her on the internet has brought up the ugly tendency of people to dismiss celebrities and women as “non-gamers”.

Tyler had this to say:

“I’ve played since I was a little kid. Since I begged my dad to buy me a Nintendo LCD Donkey Kong, Jr. Since I blew through three weeks’ allowance playing Defender at the laundromat. Since you were a twinge in the left side of your daddy’s underoos.

I was a voice in not one, but two major video game titles. I hosted the [Halo] Reach Beta tutorial. I was a Gears of War superfan panelist at ComicCon. I hosted the Ubisoft presser at E3 2012.

I didn’t do any of it for the money. For most I got paid next to nothing, and for some, less than that. I did it because I love video games.

To the GAF dicks, Gamespot trolls, to every illiterate racist douchebag on Youtube: flame away. Go nuts. Post every jackass comment your heart desires. I’ll still be playing when your mom’s kicked you out of her basement and you have to sell your old-ass console and get a real job. For now, I say to you respectfully, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, GFYS.”

I can’t support Aisha Tyler enough in this discussion.

Nintendo explains friend codes on Wii U a little more

Satoru Iwata gave a little bit more detail about friend codes returning on the Wii U in a Q&A session with investors last week. While most people will groan at the idea of them returning it is beginning to sound like we will never have to physically input a code. The entire process sounds 100% simplified.

Iwata said:

“We’re not completely getting rid of Friend Codes, but a function of the ‘Miiverse’ will simplify the process of making friends with another user in the platform by eliminating the need to input Friend Codes.”

So basically this confirms friend requests. Perhaps you can search for a user’s name by location, or if you recently played the user in an online game you can send a direct friend request bypassing the input of 12 digit codes altogether.

Wii U will have some form of Achievements

Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed to Kotaku that the Wii U will have some form of achievements on a system level but that it will not be required by developers.

He told Kotaku: “We will have that. Once you start getting into game-specific [Achievements] that’s developer driven.” When asked if they will ever require achievements in their games he said that isn’t Nintendo’s gig.

Good to see they will be there at the very least but this should please some people while upsetting another group.
