Our history

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) opened in 1852. Founded by Dr Charles West, it had just ten beds and was the first institution in the UK to offer inpatient care to children only.

In 1929, J M Barrie donated the rights of Peter Pan to GOSH. The children's classic has continued to benefit its patients ever since.

In 2012 GOSH will celebrate its 160th anniversary.

Our archivist Nicholas Baldwin (M.A., M.Litt.) chronicles a complete history of GOSH.
