There are two versions of DayZ: a MOD version (created using ARMA II: Combined Operations) and a Standalone version created by the same DayZDevTeam as well as by Bohemia Interactive.

The two versions are unique products, with the Standalone game using a more advanced engine not limited by the constraints of the MOD's limited access to the ARMA engine. The MOD continues to be supported independently even after the release of the Standalone version.

DayZ Standalone runs on the "ARMA 2.5" engine, with "Rocket" serving as project lead at Bohemia Interactive. The game is designed to be released using the Minecraft pricing/development model: an Alpha build will be released as soon as the game is reasonably playable and will be purchaseable for a low price point, with continuous updates delivered to maintain and enhance the game as development continues on version releases.

Enhancements over the MOD in the Standalone version include:

  • An updated run-engine (using a more recent version of the engine designed for Take on Helicopters and ARMA II: Operation Arrowhead)
  • An updated Chernarus map
  • A new weather system
  • A great deal more enterable buildings
  • Re-developed infected character models, with a greater variety of zombies to encounter
  • ...and much more
  • New skins and characterz

Development tracking of the DayZ Standalone project can be followed on the DayZ Standalone official site, Rocket's DayZ Reddit page, the DayZ Tumblr page, and the Day Z Development Twitter page.

As always, info and downloads of the DayZ MOD can be found at DayZMod.com or on the DayZ Forums,
