The Secret World dev explains PvP changes in Last Train to Cairo update

The Secret World developer Funcom is expanding the player-versus-player combat system in the game's upcoming sixth content update, "The Last Train to Cairo," the studio said in a new development blog post. Players wanted direct rewards for PvP combat and ways to show off their PvP prowess to other users, said system designer Tim Donks. So Funcom is adding a new feature called Battle Rank. PvP kills now provide experience points that are shared among group members, and the XP goes into each player's Battle Rank. Leveling up Battle Rank offers currency that can be used to purchase PvP rewards that are separate from power increases, so new players won't be at a disadvantage against experienced users — PvP combat will still be skill-based. PvP rewards include special uniforms that can...

Skyrim Steam update adds Legendary difficulty, raises level cap

An update for the Steam version of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim adds a new Legendary difficulty setting to the game, which allows players to raise their characters' levels higher than ever before, Bethesda announced today. The new difficulty setting, part of Skyrim's 1.9 update, allows players to reset their individual skills after they've reached level 100. After dropping the skills to the base level of 15, players can rank up through them again, re-unlocking the valuable perks in each tree — and, more importantly, allowing their characters to level up far beyond the game's original level cap, since players must rank up their skills a certain number of times before moving on to the next character level. The update is only in its beta phase, meaning its PC only for now, but Bethesda...

Robotoki announces second project, The Adventures of Dash, on Kickstarter

Former Call of Duty creative strategist and community manager Robert Bowling unveiled his first project at new studio Robotoki, Human Element, last year. The company's next project, The Adventures of Dash, is something different. It's a 2D side-scroller, a platforming and puzzle adventure. It's cute, charming and currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. The idea for The Adventures of Dash is rooted in classic 8-bit and 16-bit games, the type of game Bowling himself says he turns to when he's "burned out" on modern day games. The first game Bowling name-checks when talking about his fondness for 2D side-scrollers is Super Mario World for Super Nintendo. Bowling said he assigned the Dash team to play that game and three others — Aladdin and The Lost Vikings for SNES and Super Mario...

Female protagonist in a main Assassin's Creed game 'wouldn't be surprising,' says Ubisoft

A main Assassin's Creed game could feature a female protagonist in the future — in fact, it "wouldn't be surprising," said Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag director Ashraf Ismail in an interview with IGN. Asked why Black Flag features another male lead, Ismail said that Ubisoft planned long ago that Assassin's Creed 3 and Black Flag would "tell the story of the Kenways." For that reason, he said, "We actually never thought, 'Could this be a woman?'" But Ismail said Ubisoft isn't against having a female lead in a future Assassin's Creed title. "I would say it wouldn't be surprising to see a female assassin coming up in a mainline Assassin's Creed," he told IGN. To date, the only Assassin's Creed game that has starred a female character is the PlayStation Vita title Assassin's Creed 3:...

From film school to video games: The story of Blackwell's Asylum

"Easy now, Nellie," he says. "We've been through this before. It doesn't hurt a bit." He administers the shot somewhere you can't see. "There, there," he says. "That wasn't so bad now, was it Nellie?" The world blurs into blackness. Blackwell's Asylum is provocative, designed to make players uncomfortable and provoke reactions. Judging by the buzz that surrounds the game, it's working. Created by a group of students from the Danish Academy of Digital Interactive Entertainment under the direction of Claudia Bille Stræde, the game is a finalist in the Independent Games Festival's 2013 Student Showcase. Retro City Rampage developer doesn't expect to profit from WiiWare sales

Retro City Rampage developer Brian Provinciano doesn't expect to profit from bringing the throw-back fighting game to Nintendo's WiiWare service due to the costs associated with porting the title; however, he tells Nintendo Life, this is fine with him. Prior to being given access to Nintendo's development kit, Provinciano was required by the WiiWare company to have legitimate office space from which to work from. As an independent developer this wasn't something that was necessary for him in typical development, but he invested in an office for Nintendo's sake. Another mountain to climb was the issue of needing to sell a particular number of units before Nintendo finally begins paying the developer their share in profits. With the relatively recent appearance of Wii U consoles, as well...
