Minecraft is a sandbox open world game where players find themselves alone in a randomly generated world and have to survive. Players are able to build structures by mining and gathering materials, as well as craft weapons, tools, and armor. There are also monsters that appear at night, and inside of dark caves, that the player must be wary of.

Mojang's Mojam spawns nine new indie games for charity

Mojam, the Humble Bundle games development jam participated in by Minecraft developer Mojang and a number of other independent developers, is now over, having spawned nine titles that will be available for download "in the near future," according to the official Mojang blog. Teams from the Mojang camp created four new prototypes: Nuclear Pizza War, Endless Nuclear Kittens, Battle Frogs and Nuke the Dinosaurs Blueprint Prototype. The additional five studio participants developed a single game each. Grapefrukt created the game prototype Tektonic, Ludosity made Space Hunk, Oxeye developed for 3918, Vlambeer made Wasteland Kings and Wolfire created Low-light. Minecraft 1.5 Redstone Update for PC coming early March

Minecraft 1.5 Redstone Update, the upcoming update for the PC version of the game, will release in early March, Jens Bergensten, Minecraft's lead designer and developer tweeted recently. "Minecraft 1.5 will be released in roughly 2 weeks, early March," Bergensten tweeted. The Redstone Update will include new features and bug fixes, such as improvements to minecarts, greater consistency to the way redstone ore behaves and a new capacitor block. A few other notable Redstone Update additions include a daylight detector, which can used to make solar panels when paired with a capacitor, more fireworks, Nether-based ore and removal of the "south/east rule" glitch.

Minecraft Papercraft Studio app hits iOS

I have a theory: Minecraft's incredible reach among gamers, especially young tween and teen gamers, can get them involved in nearly anything. I'm going to use this new app from 57Digital to test this theory with my son this weekend. 57Digital's Minecraft Papercraft Studio allows you to print out and create your own Minecraft-themed paper figures. The app lets you select from more than 300,000 "pixel-perfect" papercraft models or even create your own using built-in skins. Once you've created and previewed the model in 3D, you can print out the PDF and assemble it with some glue and a pair of scissors. The app also supports importing skins from 57Digital's last app, Minecraft Skin Studio. Check out the short tutorial below if you're interested.

Journey takes the lead in BAFTA nominations

The British Academy of Film, Television and Arts unveiled this years nominees for games in 2013, revealing thatgamecompany's meditative saga Journey has taken the lead with eight nominations. A total of 53 video games are up for awards across 17 categories this year. Trailing immediately behind Journey in greatest number of awards in Telltale Games' The Walking Dead with seven nominations, Far Cry 3 with six and indie darling Dear Esther with five nominations. Minecraft: Pi Edition released as a free download today

Minecraft: Pi Edition, a free version of Mojang's block-based world builder created for the diminutive Raspberry Pi computer, is available for download today, according to a post on Mojang's website. Announced last November, the developers behind the credit card-sized computer on a chip created the port. Mojang's chief word officer, Owen Hill, imagined at the time that players could use the built-in programming features to "use the Pi to learn the fundamentals of programming on a minuscule budget." A Minecraft infographic designed by Reddit user FriskyShotgun details how to determine the mind-boggling amount of blocks estimated to be used in a single world. The break-down, which can be viewed below, works out the figure through a method of measuring the size of each block compared to the area of the Minecraft world. It concludes each Minecraft world contains over two hundred sixty-two quadrillion, one hundred and forty-four trillion blocks, including air blocks; however, Reddit users continue to debate whether it is in fact even far larger a number. That's around 26,000 times the number of starts within the Milky Way galaxy.

Independence is Mojang's core strength according to founders

Mojang, the development team behind Minecraft, have turned down buyout offers from almost every major gaming company in the industry, the Mojang co-founders said in a recent Reuters interview. They also rejected courting from the co-founder of Napster, Sean Parker, who wanted to be a part of the Mojang party. Carl Manneh, one of the three Mojang co-founders said that independence is a "core strength" of Mojang "We can make decisions by going into a room and in 15 minutes we're done. Minecraft tops Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade games for 2012

Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade reached revenues of $290 million for the year 2012, magnifying the previous year's reported revenue by twofold, according to the Research & Analysis division of analyst firm Forecasting & Analyzing Digital Entertainment, LLC (FADE). FADE attributes the revenue growth to hit titles such as 4J Studios' Minecraft, which sold 4.5 million units for a gross of $97 million. Minecraft creator 'Notch' responds to $101M 2012 earnings

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson recently commented on his 2012 earnings, which totaled around $101.4 million, on Reddit, calling it "weird but wonderful."
