God of War: Ascension review: bearing gifts

God of War: Ascension sees Sony Santa Monica's tremendously popular series in something of a predicament. After three console releases — and two portable titles — the series has nearly exhausted the source material it's depended on since 2005. Then there's the matter of their anti-hero main character Kratos, who went from tortured avenger in 2005's God of War to mass murderer and all around jerk in 2010's God of War 3. God of War 3 also managed to deliver what some still consider to be the PS3's most technically impressive title, with stunning graphics and an epic sense of scale and showmanship to accompany Kratos's quest to take down the entirety of the Olympian pantheon. Sony Santa Monica's solution then is to take God of War: Ascension backwards, at least chronologically. God...

Dead Space 3: Awakened DLC aims to heighten the horror on March 12

Stumbling, he moves forward around a corner into a room awash in candle light. Hanging from a doorway, strung up by its wrists in a mock crucifiction, is a bloody human corpse. Except this corpse's head and limbs have been removed and replaced with crudely sewn-on necromorph parts. The Unitologists are at it again in Dead Space 3's first piece of downloadable content, Awakened, dragging protagonist Isaac and his new-found partner Carver down again into the rabbit hole of necromorph worship. The pack, which adds several more hours of content to the game's main campaign, features both single and co-op play, new weapon parts and circuits and will be...

Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot was itself rebooted several times

Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics' just-released reboot of the action game series, was itself rebooted multiple times during development, according to The Final Hours of Tomb Raider by Geoff Keighley. "There have only been two things that have stayed the same throughout his entire project," said Karl Stewart, Crystal Dynamics' global brand director. "One, it's set on an island, and two, it's called Tomb Raider." The developers began debating what kinds of changes would constitute a reboot in 2009, questioning everything from gun mechanics to heroine Lara Croft's historically shapely figure. The team's first shipped experiment after their rethinking was 2010's Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. The Tomb Raider moniker didn't appear on the game because Crystal Dynamics was saving it for...

Deadpool: The Game's latest trailer is packed with gratuitous explosions and adult humor

The latest trailer for High Moon Studios' Deadpool: The Game, courtesy of IGN, shows a title packed with plenty of raunchy, juvenile jokes with just enough explosive action to balance it all out. Narrated by the Merc with the Mouth himself, the video posted above shows some of the first in-game clips from High Moon's title. After Deadpool introduces the trailer, the scene switches to shots of crumbling ruins and a mysterious woman bathed in light. From a distance she somewhat resembles Death, a character already confirmed for the title who will reportedly send Deadpool on missions, or Domino, a sharp-shooting member of the X-Men that will also appear in the game. The trailer also introduces Cable, Deadpool's once-partner and X-Men member, and features several gratuitous shots of the...

Far Cry 3 could get a follow-up soon, lead writer teases

Far Cry 3 could be getting a follow-up release soon, according to lead writer Jeffrey Yohalem in an interview with Joystiq. When asked whether he has something in mind for Far Cry 3's world and characters, Yohalem said: "Yes ... I'm working on something now that will be surprising, I think, when it's announced. But it definitely is a 'strike while the iron's hot' thing, and we'll see." Yohalem's comments echo the sentiments of Ubisoft, which said back in February that fans will not have to wait another four years for the next Far Cry game. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said at the time that Far Cry 3 performed "way better than expected," shipping 4.5 million copies. Joystiq also reports that the Brazilian classification board lists a Ubisoft title called Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, which...

Telltale aiming for this fall for The Walking Dead season two (update)

Correction: In a statement to Game Informer, a Telltale representative corrected Connor's quote to Eurogamer, stating, "The current estimated release window for Season Two of The Walking Dead is for fall of ‘this' year (2013), and not ‘next' year (2014) as has been reported after a recent interview." We apologize for passing along this misinformation. The original article follows below. The Walking Dead episodic adventure game developer Telltale Games is hoping to launch the series' second season of content next fall, CEO Dan Connors told Eurogamer following the BAFTA award ceremony. "We're aiming for fall next year," Connors simply replied to Eurogamer's query about when the new season would arrive. That's a while for fans of the series to wait, but they might find respite in...

PETA says whaling in Assassin's Creed 4 glorifies hurting and killing, Ubisoft responds

When Ubisoft's pirate-themed Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag was unveiled this week, we learned that whaling would be part of the game. The animal-rights group PETA was quick to condemn Ubisoft, saying its inclusion glorifies hurting and killing animals. Polygon spoke to Matt Bruce of PETA's International Grassroots Campaigns to clarify the animal-rights group's stance. "There are so many creative minds at Ubisoft that are involved with the Assassin's Creed series that we find it really disappointing that they feel the need to glorify whaling," Bruce said. "PETA encourages video game companies to create games that celebrate animals, not games that promote hurting and killing them." PETA's objection to whaling in the game centers on the depiction of what it sees as real-world...
