The link was restored at 12:34 p.m. ET

NASA managed to fix its broken communication link with the International Space Station (ISS) earlier today after a temporary malfunction.

During a software upgrade for NASA's command and control and voice/data communication systems, the link to the ISS suffered a glitch and was knocked offline at 9:45 a.m. ET. The glitch occurred when the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite system switched from the primary computer to a backup computer.

For the duration of the outage, the astronauts at the ISS used Russian ground stations for communications. Around 12:34 p.m. ET, the link was restored.

"It is a problem, but the crew was not in danger," said Josh Byerly, spokesman for NASA.
