An online petition to legalize the practice of unlocking cell phones passed the 100,000 signature threshold that qualifies for an official response from +The White House. Unlocking cell phones became illegal last month after the Librarian of Congress determined the practice would no longer be excluded from DMCA restrictions.

What should the White House do about unlocking phones?

That's a pretty misleading photo, +Mashable ! Made me think we were talking about legislating the sliding unlock button.

+Adrian Dahlin pretty clever though, get people stirred into the movement under the illusion their little iOS slider wont unlock their phone. I love it haha.

Here's hoping that someday when we buy something it will truly be ours to do as we want.

It is the case in France : after few months, the phone company has to unlock it if you ask them. The price of the phone is included in the bill after all, so it's yours

This is like the forbidden fruit case... the more you say people can't do something, the more they will

I would want the choice of carrier. I can't believe this is even a law in the US! Hope it doesn't swim over here to the UK.

I am in the process of my phone being unlocked free of charge right now, just waiting for confirmation from VodafoneUK. Te UK copies a number of laws implemented by the U.S, so if this does come to the UK, then I will never get a phone on contract.
Elizabeth Lewis
Well the phone and the phone number should be yours, if you pay for it, pure and simple,

Define illegal, I am UK based and we have lots and lots of 'laws', from parking too long in a supermarket to telling the local council if you wire a new light... They are not 'laws', if you called the local police station they would just end the call :), I presume that a mobile phone shop will not end able to call 911 and have some never arrested for unlocking a phone??? Is this one of many pretend laws?

I think your mixing up the terms rules and laws, very different.
