Diablo 3 review: angels and demons

"DIABLO 3 QUICKLY MAKES SCANDALOUS DEPARTURES FROM PREVIOUS GAMES. SKILL POINTS AND ATTRIBUTES ARE OUT ... POTIONS ARE A THING OF THE PAST ... TOWN PORTAL SCROLLS? GONE. MAGIC WEAPONS ALREADY HAVE THEIR PROPERTIES LAID BARE." From a thousand feet up, Diablo 3 resembles Diablo Past, more or less. It's still a game defined almost entirely by clicking on things - you click on the ground to move your character to that point, you click on items to pick them up, you click on enemies to make them dead. Enemies yield randomly generated loot. Loot, more than levels or character progression, remains the beating heart of Diablo 3. While all of this is familiar, Diablo 3 quickly makes scandalous departures from previous games. Skill points and attributes are out. Instead, each...

Diablo 3 designer discusses 'underlying philosophies' of item changes

Items in Diablo 3 will continue to undergo changes affecting the link between the frequency of rare items and their subsequent power, designer Travis Day announced via the Battle.net forums. Day writes that Legendary items in particular need to be rare and powerful, rather than just the former. "When a Legendary drops," Day wrote, "the question that goes through a player's mind should never be ‘is this a good item?' It should be ‘how awesome is it?'" Future Legendary items will also be able to roll base stats at the level of the monster that dropped them in order to give players more diversity. The team plans to reduce the frequency rare items drop at in order to "make it fun and rewarding to hunt down new items." According to Day, this simply means that "bad rares" will be less...

Diablo 3 will not include cross-platform play between PC and PS3

Diablo 3 will not feature cross-platform play between PC and the upcoming PlayStation 3 release, the game's community manager Vaeflare clarified on the Battle.net forums. According to the post, Blizzard has no current plans to allow for connectivity between PlayStation Network and Battle.net, the result of which will be separate characters on the user's Battle.net account and their PlayStation account. It was also revealed Blizzard has no plans to allow for analog controllers to be used on PC, and likewise, as the console edition of Diablo 3 was developed with a controller in mind, the PlayStation 3 version of the title will not support keyboards or mice. Last week it was also revealed Diablo 3 is in development for the upcoming PlayStation 4 console. The PS3 and PS4 versions of D...

Sony's timing for PS4 was perfect, EEDAR says

Sony's timing on its PlayStation 4 reveal "was perfect" and "wise," according to vice president of insights, Jesse Divnich, of market research firm Electronic Entertainment Design and Research "By announcing early and at an isolated event, it allows Sony to capture 100 percent of the attention of gamers, technology enthusiasts, and industry insiders," Divnich said. "Sony's announcement now gives publishers plenty of time to prepare for E3 and it shifts the focus of the show to the software, which ultimately is what gamers look forward to the most." According to Divnich, Sony is now "in a perfect storm of circumstances" that will help hype the next generation throughout the entire industry. He continued to warn third-party publishers against waiting to throw in support, adding that...

Rob Pardo responds to negativity on Battle.net forums, takes 'full responsibility' for Diablo 3

In a recent thread dedicated to Diablo 3 director Jay Wilson's departure, chief creative officer Rob Pardo discouraged players from bashing Wilson for Diablo 3's quality, placing blame on himself. Wilson announced his retirement on the Battle.net Diablo 3 forums on Jan. 17. The response, which spans more than 170 pages, drew some ire from users, prompting Pardo to respond in turn. "This thread saddens me greatly," Pardo wrote. "I know that the Battle.net forums have earned a reputation for rough justice, but I do not believe justice is being served by how people are speaking about Jay's departure from Diablo 3." Pardo continued that he's proud of the Diablo franchise and the team's work on Diablo 3, but acknowledged that "the Diablo community deserves an even better game." "If you...

Diablo 3 director Jay Wilson moves on to other Blizzard project

Diablo 3 director Jay Wilson is leaving his position to work on another project within Blizzard, he announced today. Calling the development of Diablo 3 "one of the most challenging and rewarding periods of my life," Wilson said that after seven years on the game, he has "reached a point creatively where [he's] looking forward to working on something new." To that end, Wilson will be leaving Diablo 3 and "transitioning elsewhere within Blizzard" over the next several weeks. "This decision was not an easy one for me, and not one I made quickly, but ultimately it's what I feel is right," he said. Wilson added that his departure from Diablo 3 "will not negatively impact [the studio's] ongoing support" of the game, and that he "won't be abandoning the team" during the transition period...

Latest Diablo 3 patch introduces tweaks to the interface and reactions to taking damage

The upcoming patch for Diablo 3, patch 1.07, makes a broad number of changes across the board in addition to adding PvP dueling, including tweaks to the Battle.net interface and how characters react to taking damage, according to the patch notes posted on Battle.net. With the new PvP dueling system, Blizzard intends to create a "safe, opt-in location" where players can challenge each other without suffering the "griefing" players would in Diablo 2. Groups of two to four players can now challenge one another in a new zone specifically designed for this type of dueling. The zone is accessible by speaking with a specific character, Nek the Brawler, at the New Tristram inn. Blizzard has increased the base item pick-up radius to 3 yards from the original 1.5 yards, and players' who are...
