According to Kotaku sources, the PlayStation 4 will not use Sony's Cell processor, nor will the next-gen PlayStation use any kind of generational successor to the Cell, according to those same sources.
This follows rumors that Sony is working with AMD on the PlayStation 4, which if true, would mean that AMD is collaborating with all three major console makers on their next home consoles. If the collaboration with AMD pans out, it might mean that the CPU and GPU for the PS4 will come on one chip and be architecturally very similar to a PC.
Rumors on next-gen consoles have been flying for the last several months, and while Sony is not rushing into anything, and expects to be the "last to announce" a new console, Microsoft appears to be already talking with developers. The Xbox 720 (or 'Durango') still isn't likely to launch in 2012, however.
Nintendo remains the only platform holder of the big three confirmed to be launching a new console this year.
