Fuse character trailers introduce us to the squad

EA has released a quartet of new trailers for Insomniac's upcoming squad-based cooperative shooter Fuse. Each centers on an individual member of the Overstrike 9 special forces team, introducing audiences to their backstory and unique abilities. Above, we get a look at team leader Dalton Brooks, a cynical and dryly-snarking former mercenary whose special ability lets a player project a fixed energy field, shielding teammates from enemy fire. The three videos below serve as an introduction to the rest of the team. Naya Deveraux is Overstrike 9's stealthy assassin, whose personal cloaking device enables her to sneak around a battlefield undetected, and whose gun seems to shoot miniature black holes. Naya's family issues rear their heads as her father — who trained her in her youth to...

The Besties Podcast 47 - Proteus and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Griffin succumbed to the Andromeda Strain this week, leaving Frushtick, Hoops and myself to brave The Besties without him. I confess, it was tough. Fortunately, we had two very different, very unusual games to discuss in the forms of Proteus and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Proteus is what you might call an art game. Drawn in colorful and simple polygons, the game lacks traditional goals and rules. When Proteus was released a few weeks ago, a band of perturbed critics claimed Proteus wasn't a game at all. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance on the other hand is the stereotypical action video game. The neo-future world is chock-full of robots and foot soldiers that can be sliced like a watermelon in Fruit Ninja. The game has a clear goal and that's KILL, KILL, KILL! To kill or chase a...

Injustice gameplay videos show off over-the-top finishing moves from Superman and Sinestro

Two new Injustice: Gods Among Us gameplay videos were released today showing a battle between Superman vs. Sinestro and Green Arrow vs. Hawkgirl. Both Sinestro and Hawkgirl were confirmed for the Injustice line-up earlier this week. The videos show the over-the-top finishing moves of the characters, including an out-of-this-world attack from Sinestro that involves him pulling Superman through a portal to outer space and slamming two meteors to crush his opponent. In the battle between Green Arrow and Hawkgirl, the characters throw each other with such intensity that they crash through walls into other arenas and, at 1:21, Hawkgirl is sent flying through the sky and is beaten up by giant non-playable characters – Giganta and Atom Smasher — who are brawling in the background. Defiance video introduces the Ninety-Niners

One of the many enemy groups in Defiance is the Ninety-Niners, the focus of a new video released today by publisher Trion Worlds. The Ninety-Niners are "crazed cyborgs," miners who gave up their humanity to augment their bodies in ways that would help them scour the Earth for minerals and other precious commodities. When they were human, they ran the Muir Union Mining Company. Their cybernetic enhancements give them superhuman strength, and they're fiercely territorial beings — so be careful when you're traipsing through Ninety-Niner country. Defiance, a first-person shooter MMO that is tied into a Syfy television series of the same name, launches April 2 on Windows PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, two weeks before the series premiere. Skullgirls fundraiser highlights gap between game budget reality and perception

Developer Lab Zero Games' fundraising drive to add a new character to 2D fighting game Skullgirls is already successful. But the young studio's efforts to raise $150,000 to add one new female fighter to its game incensed some gamers, leading to a charged conversation about the cost of making games. In just a few days, Skullgirls' Indiegogo campaign has pulled in more than $250,000 in donations. But as a recent report on Giant Bomb highlights, the initial $150,000 target was met with some disdain. Citing comments in a Joystiq article — "I've overseen whole projects that cost less than that;" "For one character? Even Capcom isn't that greedy" — Giant Bomb magnifies the disparity between what a game or game asset can really cost versus video game fans' perspective. Similar but more...

The Unreal Engine 3 game will send players to Aztec tombs, deep into the Arctic and into ancient Egyptian pyramids in search of artifacts and adventure. As protagonist James Lee Quatermain, players will face more than just deadly traps and puzzles, they'll also contend with supernatural enemies and Nazi soldiers with a taste for the occult. Bit.Trip Runner 2 review: video star

Anyone can play Bit.Trip Runner 2. Gaijin's latest Commander Video-driven installment to the Bit.Trip series is less complicated than its full name — Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien — would have you believe. As Commander Video, the player is propelled to the right side of the screen. You jump over, slide under, kick through and spin around obstacles on the way to a finish line with the tap of a button or flick of a joystick. Hit an obstacle and an invisible string yanks the Commander back to the beginning or the most recent checkpoint. If you desire a little extra challenge, there are items to collect and alternate routes to explore. It's nearly as accessible and very similar in play to its predecessor. But the original Bit.Trip Runner, with its chiptune...

Opinion: Will VFX studio unionization inspire video game developers?

And so are a lot of other VFX studios. And a lot of the people who work at those studios, some of which no longer exist, were picketing and protesting right outside the theater where the awards were being handed out. At a time when hardly a single film can be made in Hollywood without some manner of VFX retouching or enhancement, the ability of VFX studios to stay in business — and that of its artists to earn a living wage — is practically non-existent. This, in spite of the fact that heavily visually enhanced films are among the highest-grossing in Hollywood, and in spite of those films' massive multi-million dollar budgets. The ability of VFX studios to stay in business is practically non-existent What's worse is that most within the industry don't even seem to be aware of this...

New box art for Ubisoft's next installment in the Assassin's Creed series, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, was released by the publisher this morning. The image shows a first look at a new assassin, who appears to carry at least three guns as well as a cutlass, against the backdrop of a pirate ship. This follows the apparent leak of a poster for the new title earlier in the week which, while at the time not officially confirmed by Ubisoft, also features an iconic assassin battling a handful of pirates aboard a ship. According to a packshot made available by Ubisoft, the game's PlayStation 3 edition will in addition include 60 minutes of exclusive gameplay. The game will release to PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U. We attended events for the game in New York, London and San Francisco and...
