Console packs an x86 GPU, 8 GB of DDR3, a powerful GPU, and a custom processor for background processing

Sony Group President Andrew House kicked off Sony Corp.'s (TYO:6758) 6 p.m. press conference with the expected news, commenting, "The demand for a new console were clear....Today we will give you a glimpse into the future of play.  The most personalized gaming experience available today... the most powerful platform ever.We believe that PlayStation 4 represents a shift from thinking of a box or console... PlayStation is the best place to play."

Sony's fourth generation console, which will enter the eigth generation of console wars has been in the works since at least 2007.  The console packs a new x86 processor replacing the International Business Machines, Inc. (IBM) derived CELL processor from the PS3.  The system has 8 GB of DDR3 RAM (unified) shared by the GPU and CPU.  Sony did not specify the hard drive size, but it promises it is "huge".

The new controller has a light bar, which is recognized by a 3D camera on the console, allowing motion control (similar to the Wii, Kinnect, etc.).  The new controller also features a headphone jack and share button, as rumored.  The controller also features a power button that can pause games; all games will be equipped with power save features.

Games can be downloaded while the console is in the low power/background mode.  The background processing is handled by a secondary "custom" chip.  Lead architect Mark Cerny explains, "[Our] long-term vision is to reduce download times to zero... if we know enough about you we know what game you'll purchase next and download it in the background."

There's also continual support for hardware video compression when the console is on.

The console also supports using smartphones, tablets, and the PlayStation Vita as controllers via custom apps on the latter two (specific platforms were not announced).  Most PS4 titles will be playable on the PlayStation Vita as a secondary screen.

For sharing Sony is pairing up with Facebook, Inc.'s (FB) ubiquitous social network and Ustream.  Describes Mr. Cerny, "By combining the PS4, the PlayStation Network, and these social platforms, our goal is to become the social platform for gaming."

One thing Sony views as key to the upcoming console's success is to woo developers big and small.  Much like Apple, Inc. (AAPL) Sony made it clear that it's all about the developers and will promote small third party studios and big studios alike via abundant resources and a set of accessible APIs.

For big end studios, there's plenty of room for creativity; high end game titles are expected to feature characters with up to 30,000 polygons. Some of the high end games shown off included Killzone: Shadowfall, inFAMOUS: Second Son, Driveclub, Deep (Capcom Comp., Ltd. (TYO:9697)), Final Fantasy (unnamed) (Square Enix Holdings Comp., Ltd. (TYO:9684)), Watch Dogs (Ubisoft Entertainment SA (EPA:SA)), a Diablo III port (Activision Blizzard, Inc. (ATVI)), and (now-independent) Bungie's new title "Destiny".

Hey! my little sister uses facebook because she has a life. It's now the dominant chat program to keep in toutch with your friends real life or otherwise, just like MSN was at one time, and AIM/ICQ/IRC before it.

Simply an evolution of possibilities. IRC allowed you to share text. ICQ/AIM allowed you to share files. MSN allowed you to share audio and video. Facebook let's you share just about anything to anybody. To be honest i can't really see what the next step would be, as for a large part of the population this is already a step too far, me included. But atleast i know my sister is informed and has everything set to private as much as possible.

In any case, what worries me more is the quote "if we know what game you're going to buy next we can download it in the background for you". I don't want sony to know what i'll buy next. I want my friends to know, sure, i'll talk to them about cool games coming out, usually try and convince them to get it as well.

But i don't want sony to know or pre-load it for me. Because then, what's to say they won't preload other games "i like"? The point is here i've got no vested interests in convincing others to play the same game. If they won't, i'll find people online to play with. But sony does always have a vested interest, they make a cut on every sale. They are biased and thus listening to them about what you might like is very dangerous indeed, you might find you like everything.

huh? Sorry I'm not cool enough to qualify to have a fb account.

But i have eyes.. and i know losers who constantly access fb with their phones.. its just shows how bored they really are.. desperately wasting time on fb.. its nothing more than pathetic.

Why not do something productive and improve your mind... damn do anything other than giving away your personal information ... for free no less and trolling 'friends'.. of which most are complete strangers.. Totally sad and pathetic!!!

There was a world before FB and it didnt require giving all your personal details, photos and geographical location away and people soooooooooooooomehow managed to say in touch with friends/family.

I'm 35, but you honestly sound like a 50 year old cranky geezer who just doesn't "get" the digital age.

I have family spread out all over the globe. And before you say what I know you're going to say, yes, I DO call them on the phone too. However when I log into Facebook, and see new pictures of my six month old niece, it makes my day a little bit nicer.

Perhaps my last comment was too vague... i didnt particularly mean yourself, for the record i normally find your comments insightful and fairly unbais... but if you look at some of the other posts you'll know why i said people are obsessed and defend it unconditionally... its like i've cut down their mother or something stupid like that.

That said.. FB has become this beast that no one can live without, its like the world will fall apart if it goes away or your some sort of social pariah if you dont conform to popular culture. It's like everything must be linked to FB or the stupid masses won't know about your product or service.

Why on earth would people happily live their lifes through FB.. i find that incredibly... well pathetic... dont people care they are giving their personal details/photos away for free?

It sounds like you don't have a teen in your surrounding.

In my time, it was occupying home phone line for hours.

Later on, it was txting to oblivion and back.

Nowadays, when even a teen on a pocket money budget can have smart phone, it is FB-ing.

Hmmm... well actually i spent 99% of my free time down the beach getting hammered by the surf or building remote control cars/aeroplanes.. just like the majority of my friends.. spending all your time on the phone/txting or fb is a product of nothing better to do with your time.

For the record I do feel sorry for teens these days... their whole lifes are dicated by popular culture.. I mean they all want to be famous, are covered in tattoo(because is so unqiue) and desperately trying to be cool.. ie must own apple, must follow fashion, must have fb

I was thinking about the whole X86 thing, and the fact that the ps4 is essentially a mid spec pc with a custom os and case, and thoughts occurred about piracy. If this thing is this close to an X86 off the shelf PC I wonder if it will be possible for the groups like FLT to crack their games for use on a PC?

It would come down to apis. The game engine needs to use parts of the OS like input, network, file system, ect and the way you do that is through apis. The ps4 will most likely use proprietary graphics, audio, and input apis (possibly even more than just those). For example, the ps3 uses LibGCM instead of OpenGL. It would require someone to write a translation layer for those apis. Some games may circumvent the graphics api (to get the absolute best performance out of the system) and those games will basically never run on anything but the ps4 without changes to the engine. There are rumors of the ps4 supporting OpenGL natively (it's emulated on the ps3), so those games would be easier to get running on a PC (running linux not windows), but you'd still need a translation layer for all the other apis.

A fixed and easily targetable console and a PC are two very different things. People repeating the basic hardware and are missing the point.

People underestimate what 8GB of UMA RAM does, 2GB for code and 6GB for assets. It will be a long time before a developer can use that as the minimum baseline for PC games. Aside from that you have less software overhead, much lower level access to the hardware, etc etc.

Its the same story as before. PCs will continue to improve through brute force while consoles will deliver multi-generational leaps in visual quality on the same hardware. Look at first gen PS2 titles like The Bouncer and compare it with a later title like God Of War 3. A 1999 PC wouldn't be able to pump out 2007 visuals, but again developers aren't doing nearly as much optimization on the PC.

Many of those "leaps" require years of experimentation and experience, careful trade offs to remove effects and polygons while retaining some level of visual quality (e.g. dynamic loading), and other level of detail adjustments. Mass Effect 1 and 2 were night and day for this sort of comparison too.

While PS4 developers go through that process, PCs will have cheap mid-range GPUs released every year that are more powerful, can push greater detail and resolutions, and they will bitterly complain everytime a poor console port is shoved at them ;).

Dell just ran a President's Day special with an 8 core desktop, 8GB memory and 2TB HD for $699. That's pretty mid-range by most definitions.

Typical console dunce comment. The PS4 is essentially using a laptop CPU and a laptop GPU. Yes it has 8GB of memory, but it's just memory. It's like having 500 GB SSD over a 500 GB HDD. It's still got slower processors than high end PCs.

I would even call it low-mid spec. The fact of the matter is that in a games console with strict TDP requirements, there's a limit to what Sony could put in the machine and that's just plain physics.

I don't think you understand just how much more efficient the PS4 architecture is at rendering graphics than a high end PC. If these specs are to be believed, the PS4 will absolutely slay any PC. Way less overhead in the hardware, way less in the software. The CPU and GPU married on the same die, so they both share the GDDR5 memory.

Well, actually the PS4 is using GDDR5, which is quite impressive. I was expecting both Sony and Microsoft to cheap out with 2gb and maybe 4 at most, so I'm pleasantly surprised by this.

I'm fully aware that you can do more with console hardware thanks to the low level access to the hardware and the lack of the overhead of Windows. But considering that If I built an enthusiast PC today it would have probably a six core intel chip, 64 gigs of ram, and dual graphics cards with probably 3 to 6gb of ram each, not to mention performance way out of the league of the gpu in the ps4, yes I would consider it a mid to low spec PC as well.

I see the whole thing as very positive though. Being that it will be very easy to cross develop for the ps4 and pc, I see this as a good thing as far as the likelihood of seeing better pc games rather than hasty console ports.

No they haven't.

Actually the gave no details about CPU/GPU/APU, outside of AMD based x86. Clock, number of cores... all still unknown.

Since it is x86 and easily upgradeable (as long as same socket is in play), they might want to leave themselves a chance to upgrade specs before console is released. Prototype might be running, say, 4 core 2.8GHz, but production model can still get faster clock, better graphics, or even more cores... without having to change whole logic.

In addition, they didn't hand MS a weapon to beat them (by announcing a bit faster specs in a few months time).

I actually think they played this smart.

I'm pretty sure it was mentioned at one point during the presentation that the CPU has 8 cores. Might be remembering it wrong though. There was a lot to take in.

Also just to say I'm disappointed to see that the author obviously didn't watch the presentation, otherwise they'd have known Sony said it was 8GB of GDDR5 (that was a "I can't even do that with my PC!" moment).

Of course, PCs don't use 8GB of GDDR5. They use 8GB+ DDR3 and then 2GB+ of GDDR5 on the GPU. The difference is that the PS4 must share its memory between the CPU and GPU so it has to go with GDDR5 to stop the GPU from sucking.

I don't think they are still on time to change the CPU (or are at least very short), while on a PC it is generally easy to change CPU/GPU on a console it's a whole different matter, they have tougher restrictions on power consumption/dissipation, AMD also has to have them ready by launch time, and they are probably using a slightly different CPU/GPU so it's not like AMD has the time or the will to change their GPU/CPU, validate them, and actually produce them.
Generally speaking you don't change things once you set your needs, you wait few months/years and them release a slim or v2 version of the console.

I think there is a small space to boost performance before production starts. Current prototypes (and developer kits) might be running on some early stage Jaguar logic, or even non-Jaguar logic with same performance level. The beauty of x86... I mean, Jaguar is officially not out yet, is it?

Well, I've heard there is no optical drive on the system, so all games are digital copies, which is the reason that the hard drive is "huge". This also makes it incredibly easy for them to control the distribution of the game as they will be the only ones you can buy from.

I doubt it will come out without a optical drive, while many people buy games using the PSN many still buy them in stores and they for sure will release a console without a Blu-ray drive just to save a few bucks and potentially make people buy the new x-box instead, this one at least is know to have a blu-ray drive (or so it seems).

Agree. Also, keep in mind that there are still lots of people in the boondocks without broadband and lots of people in second world countries without broadband (even in cities). The infrastructure isn't quite ready yet to remove the optical drive. Also, Sony is the primary pusher of blu-ray and there is no way they will leave blu ray out. Especially since the actual cost of a blue ray drive is only ~$20 for an OEM (http://www.alibaba.com/trade/search?fsb=y&IndexAre...;

Sure it does if you want real performance. But for the price, I don't see GDDR5 being worth it. It's just too pricey for the limited benefit. 8GB is a lot.

Yes it does. All it would require is a memory controller that supports GDDR5. GDDR does not need to be used with a graphics card. The cpu and gpu only deal with a memory controller they are both ignorant to the type of memory the controller ends up talking to. This is why the same gpu can use ddr3 or gddr5, nvidia and amd both use this fact to create different sku's.

And it was said during the presentation that it will, in fact, have 8GB of GDDR5.

Since RAM is (dynamically?) shared between CPU and GPU, actually having DDR3 would not make any sense. GPU performance would be too much castrated.

Last I checked the most recent x86 processors have the memory controller on the chip and none currently support DDR4 let alone DDR5!

So it's a pc then, Huge Troll face,Looks like I am going to have a blast on forums over some of my very old comments, It was just a matter of time before they all converge, Soon it won't be known as a console.
Even more reason for me to stick to my pc as why do I want a cut down version of what I already own. I think the PS3 will be the last console in my place.

entertain your annoying kids, cheap stream machine, dvd/blu-ray, in house multiplayer (you know, with actual people in your living room), exclusive titles, its not that expensive in the long run, less noise/heat, etc etc

PS3 could barely load an internet page, it has browser loading time comparable to Iphone 3g. Often Playstation Network is a ghost town compare to Xbox Live, I need to load a browser to looking something.

I think browsing an iPhone 3G is much faster than a PS3. They needed to hire somebody. Mozilla. Somebody. The web browser is so bad it almost seems intentional. I could never figure that out....is it the Cell Processor? Horrible.

And I wouldn't be surprised if Playstation Home was the biggest software money pit of all time. Absolutely no direction.

PSN is cool, though.

When I heard the specs, I could not help but think, "8-core = A10-6800" with the two cores per shared memory block architecture of Bulldozer/Piledriver and not 8-true cores. Also, I have a gut feeling the GPU numbers are from a crossfire mode of the Trinity APU and an on-die GPU (separate from the APU). This would put the GPU below a 7800 series, but still allow Sony to claim the stated GPU performance numbers (looking at "GPU" as the independent GPU+GPU processing power of crossfire APU).

Also, the specs from the new Eye look good, but does anyone else think the packaging is just not enticing at all?

Over the years, I have seen too many games played with marketers and specs. Perhaps I am too much of a pessimist now...

So how much data will PS4s be merrily downloading in the background, hoping that you'll like it? A family with a couple of these things downloading how many GBs in the back ground are going to cause many a users to have to check the small print of their "unlimited" broadband contract's fair-usage policy, as well as have many dads moaning that their internets are running slow.

If DT can be successful without even knowing anything about technology and the fact that PS4 has 8GB of GDDR5 (fast, power hungry, expensive) and not DDR3 (slow, less power, cheap) than anyone can launch a site.
