A New Downing University Center is Coming Soon!
WKU is pleased to commence the two-year, $49 million renovation project of the Downing University Center, WKU's main student center on campus. Upon completion in the fall of 2014, the state-of-the-art "DUC" renovation project will unveil an updated, innovative, sustainable space that will benefit the entire WKU community.
Many of the changes to the building, originally opened in 1970, will be at the request of students. Students were included in tours of student centers at other universities and have been instrumental in providing feedback about features and benefits that will be implemented as the new DUC comes to life.
Much of the building will be closed in phases. Occupants, including various offices, student activities and dining services, will be relocated during construction. Some of the WKU dining services will be relocated to a temporary structure near the Preston Center while others will find permanent homes in new locations.
The building is being designed to be LEED ® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified including features such as local and/or sustainable materials, energy efficient systems and daylight harvesting.
