Here's everyone working on a PS4 game

Here's everyone working on a PS4 game
That image from Sony's press conference failed to capture the breadth of the third-party support already planned for the console. After the event, Sony released a gigantic list of third-party developers and publishers signed on to work on PS4 games, organized by region.

There are a few surprises in the North American developer/publisher list. A quick onceover reveals the involvement of Armature Studios, the Austin-based company formed from Retro's leads; Bit.Trip developer Gaijin Games; N+ developer Metanet; Skullgirls' Lab Zero Games; Mark of the Ninja's Klei Entertainment, and even Retro City Rampage creator vBlank Entertainment.

Those are just some of the 47 North American companies – roughly 96 companies worldwide, including duplicates like Bethesda's North American and Japanese operations – working on something or other for PS4. That's not to say all the projects will be released. Remember Fifth Phantom Saga?

Take a closer look at the Dual Shock 4 and PS4 Eye

Sony has sent out some glossy close-up shots of today's newly-unveiled PS4 controller, the Dual Shock 4. It features a largely similar setup to its predecessor, the Dual Shock 3 – save for that front touchpad, light bar on top of the controller, redesigned analog sticks and the fact that it has no start button.

Sony also sent over shots of its new PS4 Eye peripheral, a log-like improvement over the single-lensed PlayStation Eye camera that currently exists on PS3. The PS4 Eye has two cameras built in that can gauge player distance from the television and the like.

PlayStation app brings second-screen experience to iOS, Android

PlayStation app brings secondscreen experience to iOS, Android
With a new PlayStation app, Sony plans to extend the PlayStation 4 console experience to a second-screen. Announced for iOS and Android devices, the app will allow players to enhance their gaming experience by accessing information – such as maps for the PS4 title being played – as well as make purchases for their console on the go and "remotely watch other gamers playing on their devices."

Based on its description, the app seems similar in purpose as Microsoft's SmartGlass application; however, Sony's offerings expand further with the addition of updates to its PlayStation Vita. As revealed during its PlayStation 4 reveal event, the Vita will be able to remotely play console games with the use of Gaikai's streaming technology.

PlayStation 4's Dual Shock 4, Eye camera detailed

Sony has revealed some more specifics regarding the PlayStation 4's new Dual Shock 4 controller, as well as the new, double-camera PlayStation 4 Eye peripheral announced during tonight's event.

Six-axis controls return in the Dual Shock 4, as do the familiar array of face/shoulder buttons and direction inputs. New additions to the unit include a PlayStation Vita-esque touch pad on the front of the device, which is capacitive and can register two points of contact at a time. The pad itself can also be clicked as a button, from the sound of the press release tucked away after the break. Start, Select and PlayStation buttons have had their functionality reassigned to a new "Options" button.

Meanwhile, a "Share" button allows the player to access the PlayStation 4's wealth of social options, which include live-streaming through services such as Ustream and the sharing of videos on social networks. Additionally, an LED "light bar" on top of the controller illuminates to communicate various information to players, such as a character's current health status, for instance.

That light bar also communicates with the PlayStation 4 Eye, the latest version of Sony's storied camera peripheral. This time around, the Eye features two cameras capable of a maximum resolution of 1280 x 800 each, in addition to a four-channel array of microphones. The cameras have the ability to "
to cut out the image of the player from the background, or to grasp players' position in front and behind," which sounds rather familiar if you ask us. Users can use the Eye to log into their PlayStation 4 via facial recognition, in addition to the PlayStation Move implementations you'd expect from the device point.

This is Unreal Engine 4 running on PlayStation 4

Epic's Unreal Engine 4 was shown off during Sony's PlayStation 2013 event today, where the PlayStation 4 was formally announced. Above you can see demo footage of the "Elemental" demo, while below you can comb through a gallery of some still.

Epic's Seattle arm has been toiling away on Unreal Engine 4 since the studio's formation late last year. In October, Square Enix confirmed it was the first company to publicly license Unreal Engine 4.

What we learned at the PlayStation 4 event

What we learned at the PlayStation 4 event
Sony didn't disappoint with its super-secret conference today, unveiling the PlayStation 4 and a heap of games to go with it. While some of our predictions went unfulfilled – we didn't really expect to hear anything about The Last Guardian anyway – Sony made up for it with a few surprises, such as Diablo 3 coming to PS4 and PS3.

Here's a quick roundup of the major announcements from Sony's two-hour-long conference:

PlayStation 2013 event: What we didn't see; what we wanted to see

PlayStation 2013 event what we didn't see
Sony's PlayStation 2013 event just concluded in New York City and while many developers and business types talked about the future of PlayStation 4 and what's possible, many concrete details were missing, like a price tag.

Perhaps the biggest omission was the PlayStation 4 hardware itself. Sony gave us a glimpse at the new DualShock controller – which features a new rounded design and built-in touch pad – but we didn't get to see the console. What does the PS4 look like? What will PlayStation Plus entail on PS4? Will it even exist on PS4?

Another letdown was the lack of first-party games. Sure, Sucker Punch unveiled a new Infamous game, Guerilla Games gave us a taste of Killzone: Shadow Fall and we caught a glimpse of a new IP in Knack, but where was The Last Guardian? We couldn't get a new Uncharted? What new games we did see, aside from those mentioned, were pretty tech demos for games a long way off or pre-rendered stuff. Like Square Enix's presentation and Capcom's Deep Down.

Where was the PS Vita love? All PlayStation 4 games allow for remote play on PS Vita, so why not mention a price drop? Japan is dropping the price of the PS Vita later this month and tonight would've been a great place to announce a price drop for North America.

In the end, at least we got to see the successor to Ravi drums, Media Molecule's PS Move tech demo. That's something.

Ubisoft confirms Watch Dogs for Wii U

Following today's demo of Watch Dogs during the PlayStation event in NYC, Ubisoft fired off a press release for the game confirming it will launch on the PS4. But at the bottom of that press release, Ubisoft also confirms a Wii U version – something that was never officially confirmed.

While Ubisoft confirmed a PS 4 version of the game today, Watch Dogs has also been confirmed for Xbox 360 and PS3. The game will also be available on the PC when it launches sometime in 2013.

PlayStation 4 announced, coming 'Holiday 2013'

The PlayStation 4 has been officially revealed during this evening's Sony's PlayStation Event, held at The Hammerstein in New York City. The new console is scheduled to launch Holiday 2013.

The announcement marks what feels like one of the longest console generations to date, arriving six years, four months, nine days and 18 hours after the North American launch of the PlayStation 3. In fact, the time between the PlayStation 2 and 3's launch was six years, eight months and seven days.

In contrast, the time between the original Xbox and Xbox 360 was a mere four years and one day. If the next Xbox launches later this year, it will have been nearly eight years since the Xbox 360's launch in November of 2005.
