Population estimates

The latest registrar general's mid year population estimate for Peterborough local authority area is 184,500 at mid 2011 (30 June 2011). The figure represents an increase of approximately 900 persons when compared with the 2011 Census total recorded three months earlier (27 March 2011).

Key information;

  • The population of Peterborough Unitary Authority area was estimated to be 184,500 at mid 2011
  • The population of Peterborough increased by 900 persons (0.5 per cent) between 2011 Census day (27 March) and the mid-year point. By comparison the population of England and Wales increased by 0.2 percent in the same period.
  • Peterborough clearly has a much younger age profile than the East of England and England. In all age groups up to and including the 35-39 age group, Peterborough has proportionately more persons than the East of England. In England, the same is true with the exception of the 20-24 age group.
  • There were 800 live births and 300 deaths in the three months between Census day and the mid-year point. Some 300 more people migrated into Peterborough than migrated out during the same three month period.
  • Peterborough is in the top twenty when it comes to number of births. In the three months between Census day and the mid-year point, the ratio of births to total Census Day 2011 population placed Peterborough amongst the top twenty local authorities, including London Boroughs.
  • The age groups with the greatest number of persons in Peterborough are the 25-29 and 30-34 age groups.
