How to find information on this site

Finding your way around the site

The layout of every page on the Peterborough City Council website is standard to improve access and ease navigation. Across the top of each page is a tool bar, which gives quick access from anywhere on the site to the home page, the "contact us" section and other important areas . It also gives options to generate a print friendly versions of any page or view it in text only. Beneath the toolbar is a site search facility and a "bread crumb" trail which begins "Home > ... > ..." to highlight where you are on the site. On the left hand side of each page is a navigation menu which lists the section you are in and the categories within that section. There are eight main sections on the site that can be reached from the homepage. These are: Children and families, Community Information, Environment, Housing, Jobs and careers, Planning and building, Rubbish, waste and recycling and Traffic, travel and parking

Looking for information

There are six main ways that you can find information on this web site:

1. The home page

This is the starting point of any website and a good place to begin browsing for information. The web address (called URL) of Peterborough City Council is www.peterborough.gov.uk and when you click on this web address, it is the homepage that will displayed.

Once you start to view different parts of the site, if you want to return to the homepage, just click on the word 'Home' which is situated on the left of the tool bar at the top of every page under the Peterborough City Council logo.

2. Search

Use the search box featured in the top lefthand corner of each page to type in your own word(s) and carry out a search for the word(s) on the website. It is best to use one or two key words rather than a long sentence. There is also an advanced search facility available, this can accessed either by clicking on the "Adv. search" option on the tool bar or invoking a normal search without any criteria. The advanced search enables you to specify a more complex criteria including dates and order.

3. Choose a main section

Select one of the main categories from the menu on the left handside of the screen e.g "Traffic, travel and parking". This will take you to the main page of that particular section and also expand the entries within the side menu to include sub-entries below the current section. These entries may also be highlighted with a small arrow on their left showing that there is additional content below them.

4. A - Z

The A-Z of services is another method for finding information on the site. It lists all information relating to Peterborough City Council in alphabetical order. Simply click on the first initial letter of the service you require. For example, if you want to find information on planning applications, you may choose to either click on the letter 'P' for planning or 'A' for applications.

5. Site map

A breakdown of our entire site in a tree structure can be accessed by selecting 'Site Map' from the toolbar at the top of every page.

6. Community Information

Peterborough City Council provides access to information on almost a thousand community organisations, sporting clubs and societies This can be found via the community group page under the "Community and living" section. You can search for groups/clubs either by specific name or keyword.

Also it provides details of how to contact the web team with any queries, suggestions or technical issues regarding the website.
