    NBA-Michael and LeBron go one-on-one ... verbally

HOUSTON, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Michael Jordan never played against LeBron James but that has not stopped the two from going one-on-one over how to determine greatness on the basketball court.

Jordan, widely hailed as the best player of all-time and who turns 50 on Sunday, believes it is all about championship rings, while James, 28, thinks that view is a little too simplistic.

The debate has been the chief talking point of reporters and players in the run-up to the National Basketball Association's (NBA) All-Star game in Houston on Sunday.

In an interview on NBA-TV to be aired Monday, Jordan took a swipe at James, saying his one championship could not compare with the five won by Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant.

"If you had to pick between the two, that would be a tough choice, but five beats one every time I look at it, and not that he (James) won't get five, he may get more than that, but five is bigger than one."

James, a nine-time All-Star and three-time NBA Most Valuable Player, told reporters covering Sunday's All-Star game that was just Jordan's opinion.

"At the end of the day, rings don't always define someone's career," said James. "If that's the case, I would sit up and here and say (Bill) Russell over Jordan. But I wouldn't.

"Russell has 11 rings and Jordan has six. Or I would take (seven-time NBA champion) Robert Horry over Kobe. I wouldn't do that."

James has been on such a scoring streak comparisons with the game's all-time greats were inevitable.

Before he won his first title last season with the Miami Heat he was generally regarded as a great individual talent but not in the conversation with Bryant, or someone like Jordan, who won six crowns with the Chicago Bulls.

    SCORING STREAK

James's record six-game streak of scoring at least 30 points with 60 percent shooting came to an end Thursday but he did manage 39 points (on 58 percent shooting), with 12 rebounds and seven assists in a 110-100 victory over Oklahoma City.

"Jud Buechler (three-time NBA champion with Chicago in the 1990s) has multiple rings," said James. "Charles Barkley doesn't have one ring. He's not better than Charles Barkley.

"Rings don't define a person's career. Patrick Ewing is one of the greatest of all time. Reggie Miller is one the greatest of all time.

"Sometimes, it's the situation that you're in and the team that you're in, but it's also about timing as well."

Washington Post columnist John Feinstein slammed James, saying, "you don't put Horry or Buechler into the conversation, or Steve Kerr - who won five on two different teams."

"The question is, 'As the best player on a team how many championships did you lead your team to?,'" he told Reuters. "Russell is the best winner of all-time and Jordan and Kobe are way ahead of LeBron - for now."

Bryant stepped gingerly around the fray, saying Jordan's "message is winning is above everything else."

"That's what drives him," he said. "Same thing that drives him now, win as many as you can. It's really that simple."

Feinstein said James should have taken the humble route and said of Jordan, "He's right, I have won only one title. When he was 28 he had also won one. I hope I'm fortunate enough to win a few more before I'm done."

While comparisons between the game's greats will endure, the All-Stars in Houston insist no one has reached Jordan's genius.

"Every kid that wanted to play basketball, that could play, that couldn't play, you tried to emulate Michael Jordan," said Miami Heat nine-time All-Star guard Dwyane Wade.

"That's why there will never be another one of him. He was kind of the first of his kind. Everything he did was groundbreaking in a sense.

"He did it with so much flare and so much pizzazz that even today people are still trying to be like Mike." (Editing by Frank Pingue)

I have said this many time to others. Rings do not always prove who the best is. There are many players who have more rings than Jordan yet they are not in same class. This is why I state even if Kobe was to win a 6th or 7th ring he would still not be as good or better than MJ. Kobe has played longer then Jordan and still falls short on stats such rebounds, steals, was still down on assists till this year. MJ won all 6 Final MVP and Jordan NEVER LOST A FINALS. Jordan won 5 regular seasons MVP's and is an on average 49% FG Shooter while taking on average what 22 shots a game. Jordan was also a Defensive Player of the Year. Jordan not only was a great offensive weapon but he was a nasty defender. Jordan was dominant on both sides of the floor each and every game all game long. In the Clutch Jordan was always willing to take the last shot and owned the loss for it. Also, there is plenty of evidence to support that though he did not pass much when he did pass it was for the better or the team and always gave others good looks. He made players around him better. He was willing to take on all challenges and dominated the post season. Others play better when they get to the playoffs but none dominated like Jordan.

Jordan never flopped and didn't get easy foul calls every time he drove to the rim........

I did not know any NBA team or player ever won 11 titles and 10-12 no less, 8 straight! That is just NUTS, talk about domination. So because of that 9 player have actually won over 6 titles playing on that same team. Sam Jones had 10, four others had 8, and so on. So actually Michael Jordan would of had his work cut out to break this record. Had the Bulls stayed together they might have come close because they almost surely could have won in 94, 95, 99, & 2000. They were practically unbeatable. They really didn't have many close series, looks like the Celtics had a few especially their FINAL upset win over The young Lakers. Ironically Russell would retire after this at age 35 seemingly with enough skills to possibly even win more titles with the Celtics if he wanted to. Imagine during his ENTIRE career only 3 seasons did he not win a NBA title. Talk about a champion, the last two championships he was their head coach as well. Too bad Boston was so racist back in that day. Because of that Russell hated the city and turned their back on them (probably deserved)!

This all started 3 years before I was born.

Lebron,if you have any smart's about yourself, you would know Jordan was also the nba's greatest trash talker when he retired. It appears you are trying to goat him into pulling his TT out of retirement. If he pull's his trash talking out of retirement, you might hear something that will eat at you, for the remaining of your career.

It should be fun to argue who is or was the best but the definition in a team sport should not be based on championship rings because that is not appropriate to given individuals. Perhaps the media is putting a spin on MJ's words and thoughts (I hope so). To compare LeBron's Cavaliers to Kobe's Lakers is a joke to start in such a discussion - I think MJ is smarter than that, at least I sure hope so for all the money he makes every year.

What is the big deal Jordan is making the headlines news now and that could compete in the NBA at age 50?? he may or may not compete for 2 to 3 minutes at a time running with the speedsters at their prime time, everybody watches his 20 year old clips and believe he's playing today, every retired player can still play but they can't hang with the young studs of today, all this is to bring Jordan's old conversations to cover for all his screw ups and lack of knowledge to be a successful businessman that he failed royally ever since he retired as a player, MAGIC JOHNSON OWNS MICHAEL JORDAN AS A PLAYER AND AS A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN, BULLS MUST QUIT COMPARING AND START WINNING TITLES.

LeBron dissapears sometimes in critical, tight games. Michael never once dissapeared in an important game. Never.

I think Lebron James was spot on in everything he said. I don't understand why people think championships define a player in TEAM sports, when there are so many variables that are out of players control that contribute to winning a championship. If your talkiing about individual sports, than championships define that individual person. IMO, in TEAM sports, championships does define a player.

DEAR ABBY: While I always enjoy your column, I thought your advice to "Wants My Space" (Dec. 14), whose son "Dustin" moved away five years ago and expects her to keep his room as he left it, was off the mark. I would have told Dustin what I have told both of my daughters several times: It is not "your" room; I merely let you use it.Not only is "Wants" not obligated to use her home as a storage facility, she's doing her son a disservice by doing it under these circumstances. At 24, he needs to learn that if he wants a service, it's his obligation to procure it. ...
