As computer simulation continues to cement its role as the third pillar of science—joining theory and experiment—researchers rely more and more on the power offered by modern systems. Computer scientists are using the enormous computing power of the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility to ensure that simulations are able to take the best possible advantage of these amazing machines. They are developing the tools necessary to evaluate a range of supercomputing systems, with the goals of discovering how best to use each, how to find the best fit for any given application, and how to tailor applications to get the best performance. Their work promises to improve results in all areas of computational science.
