6-Year-Old’s Imagination Brought to Life in Heartwarming Short Film

Children often possess a unique ability to view the world through their uncorrupted free-spirited eyes. Their imagination is endless, and they do not tend to mind exploring and expressing it to the world. Sometimes children can also be wise beyond their years, and they impart that knowledge to adults--if we let them.

That is the case in the short film "The Scared Is Scared," from Bianca Giaever, whose concept and story came from a 6-year-old boy named Asa Baker-Rouse. Giaever, a recent graduate of Middlebury College, asked Asa what her movie should be about, and "The Scared Is Scared" is Asa's thoughts and imagination brought to life.

The actors and animation perform the story as Asa narrates, and his imagination runs wild. It is the story of a bear and a mouse who enjoy spending time together at a pool. Beyond the funny and silly parts of the film, Asa offers some advice to Giaever, who admits she is scared about graduating from school. Asa says, "When the scared feeling comes into you, the scared is scared of things you like." He explained that when he is scared of monsters, he thinks about "pizza and juice and some meringues and a cookie. ... And then I ate it all up."

People on the Web are enchanted by the film's simplicity, wisdom, and creativity, and they're making it a hit on Vimeo. Multiple commenters have described the film as "fantastic," and one person added, "This is so sweet. I love hearing children in film just being themselves and not being scripted. Beautiful work."

So far, the movie has more than 2,000 "likes" on Vimeo, and that number will no doubt continue to rise as people enjoy its wonder and get to see the characters in Asa's story come to life.
