Super Mario World

If you've never heard of Hyadain, well, you're in for a treat - if you like over-the-top, manic, schizophrenic arrangements filled w/ amazingly goofy (yet awesome) voice acting, that is. Made (in)famous largely through his YouTube presence, Japanator reported earlier this year that the popular Japanese VGM arranger is none other than Kenichi Maeyamada, a notable anime composer whose work has appeared in One Piece & other shows. Pretty cool, eh?

This mix of the 'Overworld BGM' theme from SMW (and 1-1/Invincible from SMB) provides a pretty good introduction to his style - a bipolar, flamboyant, genre-shifting, enthusiastic, spastic melting pot of singing, talking, and just about everything else. It's in Japanese, and easily sounds like it could be the OP or ED theme from a magical girl show about some inexplicably blonde Japanese pre-teen who transforms into a voluptuous super-hero, with a gratuitous talking animal sidekick. Well, maybe something like Excel Saga would be a better fit, but either way, if you're even vaguely familiar with J-pop, especially the variety that populates the wild world of anime, you'll spot the influence from a mile away.

"Zany" doesn't really begin to describe it, but it's also very well-crafted - I love the transition from the titular western hoedown motif into an "invincible" disco groove, complete with vocoder. Alternating singing and dialogue (or "drama") again echoes the anime background; it can be a bit distracting at first, but you get used to it, and it has its own charm. Sound FX are creatively & rhythmically employed and the whole thing - while batshit crazy - is also a very complete and fully-realized artistic vision. It's got that intangible quality of "just working," almost in spite of itself, and it very much feels like a mix that needs to exist in our world, for reasons obvious & yet-to-be-revealed... perhaps, decades from now, we'll be visited by a hostile alien race intent on our complete annihilation, and it'll turn out that only THIS SPECIFIC MIX will pacify their bloodlust, I don't know... it seems plausible... enough... At any rate, it's great to see another Japanese mixer submitting to OCR, and it's also great to see another YouTube phenom hit us up as well - and an anime composer, too! I can quite safely say that this mix is unlike anything else on the site, is indelibly memorable, and packs a pretty potent musical wallop, too; epic.

Great remix guys (and girl !)

Sorry to burst your bubble there mate.
All the voices are from one person.
Speaking of, I wish Hyadain would grace us with more of his mixes.
I'd love MP3s of the Flight of the Silbird, My First Friend, The Answer, the ENTIRE Dragon Quest IV collection.<3

Nice to see this remix make it onto OCR. The style of SMW's music lends itself pretty well to this kind of arrangement, and Hyadain makes the absolute best of it.
While I love the vocals and the lyrics (especially the spoken parts are hilarious; I love the way Mario and Bowser/Koopa treat each other in this song), I'd like to hear an arrangement without them, simply to enjoy the music more.
Awesome stuff.

Somebody has GOT to resurrect the art of Animutation for this song. Pretty please?

You guys realize that this guy does all of his own vocals, even the female ones?

I'm familiar with this song, it's pretty great. Never expected to see it on OCR.
Seeing this remix here actually prompted me to search for some more of Hyadain's works and discovered this great remix of my favourite theme from FF5. I don't understand the words but otherwise it's great :-)

Quite awesome stuff. It's not often that we get some off-the-wall, in your face, super-crazy mixing that just... works.
I love the style, and I await more music in this vein (here's to hoping for some FF love from Hyadain.

"Collision" wasn't rejected on just "a name and similarities to something else." That would be like rejecting a mix for tributing/emulating someone else's style. The mix name also wouldn't matter. "Collision" used substantial portions of a non-VGM song, which we don't allow any more.

I'm still bummed that Roller Disco from DKC2 got NO'd. You guys really dropped the ball on that one. :-P

My bad, my bad. My point was that there are tracks that have great production that get rejected with higher production than this one, based on other circumstances. Probably should have done more than 30 seconds of head scratching before trying to make my point.
Anyways, OT: I don't actually like this track other than the Luigi section, which uses some awesome vocalization. The main thing this track has going for it is being amazingly catchy, in addition to having a hilarious flash video associated with it (or several depending on how much of a purist you are.)

Yes! I agree completely! I've had this song (and plenty of Hyadain's stuff) on my MP3 for a long time, and I never thought it would end up on OCR. Overall, it's a good, fun, slightly crazy song that doesn't fail to put a smile on my face. And the fact that he made that Peach voice is impressive enough for me. :-D

Basically a stellar track that is very obviously ff7 and incredibly well produced got rejected because it shared a name and similarities to something else.
