New Batman Arkham game confirmed for 2013

Warner Bros. says its "strong games release" for 2013 includes next entry in Arkham series; source say Rocksteady not developing.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that a third entry in the Batman Arkham series will launch in 2013. As part of parent company Time Warner's latest earnings report last week, CFO John Martin said the company's "strong" games release for the year includes a new entry in the series.

"And we also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise," Martin said. "So all in all, we expect Warners to post another very strong year in 2013. And with a little luck, the year should be as good or maybe even a little bit better than 2012."

Separately, VG247 sources claim this new project is not in development at series creator Rocksteady Studios. That development house is rumored to be working on a stylized prequel that will detail the Dark Knight's first encounter with the Joker. It is not expected until 2014 at the earliest.

Warner Bros. last month registered 15 new Batman domain names, including Arkham Universe, Arkham Legend, Arkham Origins, Arkham Rises, and others.

Batman: Arkham City is the latest entry in the series. It was developed by Rocksteady Studios and shipped for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 18, with a PC version following on November 22. The game received a strong critical reception and shipped 6 million units.

Looking forward to Rocksteady's prequel game though.

No rocksteady? I can see it now. Dubstep during fights and a "edgier" looking batman.

Yeah, I heard that. I'm hoping they can entice him some way with $$$ or an excellent story he feels he has to say yes too. Hey, one can always hope! At least keep Conroy. I think he has THE Batman voice.

I'm actually surprised how much I'm looking forward to this. I underrated both of the last games, and did not expect just how much simple fun they ended up being. good. I'll have some of that ThankYouVeryMuch

If Rocksteady isn't developing this game, it's doomed.

What we need now is to be able to drive the car fly the jet.

I am glad we are getting another Arkham game. Hopefully it is LONGER than Arkham City. Also a focus on Hush or maybe the Red Hood would be great.

I didn't like the last batman because the private eye mode or what it was called then ,was complicated and turned me off very soon.any way if they can do some improvements it would be welcomed, but I want drop my jaw for it.

robbiejones

@nick-nikol how was it to complicated to use? the only problem with it was it was to tempting to always play with it switched on. Ruined the gr8 artstyle of the game.

@nick-nikol It was called 'Detective Vision' and I thought it was a piece of cake to use. :)

lol, i think we can all agree that we're more interested in Rocksteadys 2014 Batman project. One does not simply, let another developer do a seperate Batman game.

I'm not a great Batman fan but due to great reviews and a games shortage (that i like) I decided to give 'City' a whirl and boy was I glad I did - totally brilliant games with an excellent fighting macanic. As for another this year, well never mind who will be making it, if its not even in production then there is seriously no hope as to a 2013 release!!!

I would say that it would be good if Rockstar took it over.

However, they would probably delay it until the PS4 and Xbox 720.

i think Rocksteady next game etrance in the series is gonna be both a prequel and sequel, i believe they must be a reason they decided to originally hint arkham world and Azrael's character hinting at a possible apocalypse perhaps the story might drift between two worlds past and present with  Rae Al Ghul character being the puppet master of an endgame scenario and possibly resurrecting the joker with a Lazarus pit to mess with the bat ( or not since Mark Hamill ain't doing it anymore).

Both Asylulm and City are amazing games but I don't believe in this. Because

- Even if Rocksteady would make it, it's hard to see how they top Arkham City, and Rocksteady is not even making it which significantly increases doubt.

-I played through both the games twice and spent lots of time in extra modes. Even if the coming game is great, the biggest urge to play Batman is satisfied by now.

They really should leave Batman standing in the glory and not water it down like is done with every other game that sold well. But we now that's not going to happen. And that saddens me.

@bostadskontrakt i know what you mean, please warner don't mess this up by giving it to another developer like you did with fear 3. don't dilute this franchise please, its already bad that you made a arkham spinoff on the ipad. please dont mindlessly milk the franchise like ubi with assassins creed.

Scarecrow is my favorite Batman villain. I always feel he's underrated and doesn't get the credit he deserves. Then finally Arkham City leaves hint after hint that he could quite possibly be the villain in the follow-up.

Then they decide to do a prequel focusing on the Joker....Again....

RedDeadRobbie
RedDeadRobbie

@SloganYams There was also a very very very very small hint at Killer Moth, which I think would be hilarious as the main villain.

I can't imagine it being jaw-droppingly epic without Rocksteady at the helm. Please prove me wrong.

Whatever they do, if they don't get rid of that worthless Games for Windows Live DRM nonsense which adds absolutely nothing to the game and only corrupts your savegames, then this will be the third in the series which I won't buy.

The games themself seem to be pretty good, but as long as G4WL is required they'll stay off my list of games to buy.

Great news . Arkham city was hands down one of the best games ever made . Controls were so fluid , natural and amazing on mouse and keyboard that if felt I was playing the game with controller and it didn't break immersion at any point . Not to mention PC only graphics options and number of tweaks . Game itself was real epic one . More from Rocksteady is good thing .

It's not from Rocksteady . Let's see how it turns out but at least Rocksteady have provided  a strong base .

So some other dev is doing the sequel to a beloved series while the original creators are doing some campy prequel/spin-off? That's kind of ass backwards.

Why do we even need a prequel anyway? Several segments of Arkham City were designed specifically with a sequel in mind (i.e. the Hush and Azrael missions were left open, as well as the many Scarecrow easter eggs).  The series should be moving forward. The first two games were a too Joker-centric. Now that he's gone, they can move on and focus on the many other villains Batman has to offer. Going back to the beginning so Joker can be the main villain again is a cop out. And if Mark Hamill isn't reprising his role, would we even want to see Joker in somebody's probably less capable hands?

I think that both Batman:Arkham Asylum and Batman:Arkham City are masterpieces.  The character protrayal and gothic environment of both titles are just amazing.  Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill provided some of the best voice acting ever in a video game.  Kudos to Rocksteady Studios!

Whoever takes over the franchise has some big shoes to fill.

Chefjase

Well. I'm sure this new game will be amazing. However, it would be nice to get a break from the Joker...especially since Hamill will most likely not reprise his role. I would also love to see a new city. Tokyo would be amazing, as there are many places to hide his cache of equipment, perhaps atop the Wayne Ent. Tokyo headquarters. One can dream.

Rocksteady not developing.

All my anxiety.

i'm more than happy to hear that WBIE will release the third of Batman Arkham game but i'm a bit skeptical because Rocksteady is not the developer. Rocksteady raise the standard of action adventure game pretty high, even higher than Naughty Dog when they released Uncharted 2. I hope whoever responsible for the next Batman Arkham would understand the burden and do their best to deliver the same experience from the first two games.

And i'm more than excited for the prequel by Rocksteady on 2014
